Chapter 258: The Startling Flute Sound
Old Yang was on the verge of tears, cursing the guy with the flute from head to toe in his mind.
Why blow the flute now of all times? Seriously!
If he got controlled, wouldn’t that count as betrayal?
Under normal circumstances, he’d be fine. That little punk Lu Liangting would definitely figure out a way to rescue him. He’d just have to tough it out for a bit.
But the problem was that it wasn’t just Lu Liangting in the vicinity; Bai Yu was there too!
Betraying them in front of Bai Yu? If he didn’t get killed on the spot, that would be considered a win! Bai Yu wouldn’t be the type to chat; she’d just keep hammering away until he was dead, and she wouldn’t feel a thing. Who knows, she might even take the opportunity to finish him off and drain him dry.
At that point, there’d be no way Lu Liangting could say a word. Old Yang would be toast—he brought this upon himself! If they didn’t k*ll him now, what if he ended up betraying them later? It was all the same—they had to k*ll him eventually. Might as well do it sooner; it would be easier!
His mind was all fuzzy, and his eyelids felt like lead, beckoning him to sleep.
Old Yang knew that if he fell asleep now, there was a very high chance he wouldn’t see tomorrow’s moon again.
He couldn’t take this feeling anymore, but he had to hold on!
Endure the torture! Getting killed means losing everything.
He still hadn’t found a wife, the ghost marriage wasn’t completed, he hadn’t seen his daughter grow up, or his sister get married. How could he just d*e like this?
Old Yang was desperately wide-eyed, glaring at Bai Yu.
Though he didn’t want to admit it, he had to say, his will to survive was keeping him going.
And where did that will come from? Well, that’s obvious!
d*ath was right there in front of him, and it was waving a kn*fe, probably thinking about how to carve him up!
No, absolutely not!
Meanwhile, Lu Liangting stood off to the side, frowning deeply.
He knew Old Yang wasn’t doing well; he was controlled by that flute’s sound. The priority should be rescuing Old Yang.
Looking at Old Yang’s terrified face, it was like a kid who had just seen an evil ghost—his fear was practically written all over him, eyes wide, legs twitching. It was downright… tragic!
Was he really that scared?
While mentally roasting Old Yang for his state, it was actually working in their favor by blocking the control from that flute sound.
No matter how it happened, success was a good thing.
If Old Yang had truly been fully controlled, Bai Yu would’ve definitely killed him.
As the flute sound slowly faded, Old Yang’s struggle eased, and the terror on his face began to dissipate. He finally stood up, and the flute sound was completely gone.
His grudge gradually spread, reflecting the relief of someone who had survived a disaster.
He had successfully lived through Bai Yu’s clutches; he snagged his life back!
Across from him, Bai Yu’s delicate brows furrowed, her long bl**d-threaded kn*fe melting away in her grip.
She didn’t bother questioning why Old Yang looked at her that way—she didn’t think about what kind of image she held in his mind, allowing him to be so terrified of a top-notch ghost in red.
She was stuck on one pressing question: how did that flute sound appear? It could influence a top-tier ghost like herself. From Old Yang’s reaction, it seemed he hadn’t detected it initially and was controlled without any awareness at first. Even when he had a heads-up later, he had to fight for his life just to hang on.
“Bai Yu!” Zhao Mingyue rushed over, “Are you okay?”
That flute sound was clearly aimed at them, targeting either the spider or Bai Yu.
“I’m fine.” Bai Yu looked up. On the roof of a nearby four-story building, several black shadows flickered and vanished.
“Whew, thank goodness! That was terrifying,” Zhao Mingyue sighed in relief.
From the appearance of the flute sound to its conclusion, no more than two minutes had elapsed. But those two minutes had everyone’s hearts racing.
Old Yang was under control, and there was Bai Yu to stop it.
But what if Bai Yu got controlled too?
Forget about Zhao Mingyue; even old-timer Li Tianan felt his heart pounding.
Good grief! If their strongest card was taken away, they might as well wait for d*ath.
“What was that?” Bai Yu turned to Li Tianan.
“I’m not sure of the specifics.” Li Tianan snapped back to reality, his expression serious. “I once heard my master mention something that can use its own life force to control thousands of ghosts; maybe that’s what this is.”
“That thing isn’t something you can just blow anytime. It has a very high requirement for the user, and typically a person can only use it three times in their lifetime. Each time consumes a huge amount of life force. Using it three times guarantees d*ath. Most people can only manage to blow it twice at most—one use costs half their life.”
“I’ve only heard about it; never seen the actual thing. The information came from my master.”
“I can’t compare to my master; I’ve always doubted whether Qiugang Village and the next village over were set up by him. He was particularly skilled at creating formations, especially large ones.”
Upon hearing that, Lu Liangting turned to him. “If blowing it costs half a life, then did they just blow it twice?”
“That seems to be the case.”
After he said that, everyone exchanged glances, some looking at Bai Yu, others at the four-courtyard house behind them.
One blow could attract all the ghosts around—the cost was enormous, each use requiring extreme caution. They would never pull it out unless it was absolutely necessary.
So, the question was: under what conditions would they dare to blow it twice?
It had to be because the first blow didn’t yield satisfactory results. They would only blow the second one if they absolutely had to achieve their aim.
To put it plainly, they weren’t after the little ghosts around—they were aiming for a specific strong ghost.
The time between the first and second blows wouldn’t exceed a minute.
In other words, they had already anticipated that one blow wouldn’t work and would only attempt the second one because they were limited to two blows. If they could blow it three times, maybe they would!
The biggest question was: which ghost were they trying to control?
Actually, the answer was obvious.
If they were going to use something so powerful, why wait until the first night they arrived to do it? They blew it not once, but twice.
If their target was the spider, then that didn’t make sense at all.
“Bai Yu, it seems these folks have set their sights on you?” Zhao Mingyue fell silent for a moment before saying that.
As soon as she finished speaking, a sound came from the courtyard behind them.
A black shadow leapt out from the yard, landing on the courtyard wall before jumping onto the roof of the adjoining building, quickly running toward the direction where the flute sound had come from. Seeing that shadow made everyone’s hearts sink.
So they’re really causing trouble.
Bai Yu could resist it, and with Bai Yu’s help, Old Yang could resist too, but the spider could not.
She was strong, but didn’t respond until the first blow, and only realized something was off when the second sound came out. She bolted from the courtyard.
It was clear she had been stopped by someone, or she would have run away long before.
Zhao Mingyue’s expression changed, and she hurried toward the four-courtyard house.
The spider got away, but what about Little Moon?
The only one who could stop the spider was Little Moon.
The group quickly followed and rushed inside once they returned to the courtyard.
The place was in disarray; three corpses lay scattered on the ground, one of which was the old man who had kidnapped Li Tianan earlier. All three bodies resembled zombies, now lifeless on the ground.
Little Moon sat on the floor, sobbing, her face tear-streaked and lips drained of color as she stared blankly at the direction the spider had gone.
She was too weak to do anything.
When she came out of the house, she couldn’t stop it at all.
Before leaving, the spider glanced back at her without saying a word. That look made her feel cold and strange.
Little Moon spent each day with the spider, so she knew a bit about ghosts.
She didn’t understand what had happened to the spider, but she could see that the spider was in grave danger.
Zhao Mingyue rushed over to help the frail Little Moon up. “Little Moon, don’t worry; your sister will be fine. Trust me.”
“I promise I’ll bring your sister back. So what you need to do now is take care of yourself. If your sister sees you like this when she returns, she’ll be heartbroken.”
“Listen to me, we have a super powerful female ghost sister here. Once she makes a move, she can wipe them out!”
“Come on, stop crying, let’s go back inside, okay?”
Little Moon nodded gently, her voice faint. “How… how can I repay you?”
Zhao Mingyue paused, surprised that Little Moon would say that. Even now, she was thinking about repaying others?
“No, no need for that. Just take care of yourself.”
“I… thank you.”
Little Moon wanted to say that Zhao Mingyue didn’t gain anything from helping her.
Her sister always told her that everything had its price.
Don’t think about taking advantage of others, and don’t wait for luck to fall from the sky.
But right now, she genuinely had no way out.
She didn’t have anything to offer Zhao Mingyue; her family had no money or valuable items.
Lost in thought, as Zhao Mingyue supported her inside, Little Moon couldn’t help but say, “I still have some money at home; let me find it for you. It should’ve been tucked away by my sister.”
“Really, it’s not necessary. Just wait for me here.”
Zhao Mingyue felt a bit helpless; this kid really had been influenced by the spider.
The key was that talking to her was futile.
It was Bai Yu who would step in, and she didn’t need to spend any money anyway.
