Chapter 260: Love from an Old Friend
As the night deepened, the sky was wrapped in total darkness, not even a sliver of moonlight to be found, and a chilly, damp wind whipped across the face. The whole sky was shrouded in thick black clouds, visibility was almost non-existent, and if it didn’t rain soon, it would be a shocking twist of fate.
Bai Yu was sitting gracefully on a bl**d-threaded bench, controlling Zhao Mingyue’s body and extending her hand to feel something—squinting ever so slightly.
With the bonus of Twin Souls and possessing Zhao Mingyue, the sensations were like night and day.
She could feel every delicate touch, even just extending her hand made her aware of the gentle breeze caressing her palm.
This sort of fine sensitivity might seem mundane for a living person, but the problem was, she was currently in a possessed state.
She had never experienced anything like this even when she was with the Dragon Lady.
“It’s going to rain.” The voice that came out was Zhao Mingyue’s.
Behind the mask, the brow of the Masked Person furrowed lightly. This silky sensation was giving her the illusion of having been reborn through Zhao Mingyue’s body.
Thinking of that guy An Que, he was a ghost who borrowed a living person’s body to be “reborn.” His method was surprisingly simple—after successfully possessing a body, he would keep bringing himself to the brink of d*ath, then proceed to devour the life force of others, and repeat this cycle, consuming the original owner’s soul while forcibly merging his essence with the new body.
The principle was quite simple: when the body entered a near-d*ath state and then revived, it would instinctively absorb and merge with his essence.
The cost? Let’s not even get into that. Going through so many near-d*ath experiences, the fact that his body could hold out was nothing short of a miracle. As his body slowly merged, he could feel pain ramping up, a pain that just kept increasing.
So, it was indeed a significant price An Que paid to barely complete this feat, and yet, here comes Twin Souls doing it so effortlessly. If An Que found out it was obtained from two Evil Gods he was very familiar with, who knows what he would think?
Bai Yu slowly opened her eyes, scanning the surroundings.
Something was approaching.
The resentment of Evil Ghosts could be felt from a distance, and given how many Evil Ghosts were clustering together, it was impossible to miss.
“They really came.”
If that flute was indeed targeting her, it meant the other party was aware of her strength. They had clearly come into contact with her and seen her in action. So the question arose: if they knew all of this, why were they so recklessly charging in with such weak strength?
Was this a trap, or was something else going on?
She could sense a large number of Evil Ghosts drawing near. Honestly, there weren’t many of them, and even those had a terribly low quality.
The only one worth noting was the chief Evil Spirit.
But did they really think they could deal with her using just this one Evil Spirit?
The Evil Spirit hovered over Qiugang Village, surrounded by twenty-three Evil Ghosts approaching from different directions, closing in on the courtyard where Spider and Little Moon lived.
With Spider gone, it seemed like the only ones left were the few helpers called in by Spider.
“I brought so many ghosts. You better not let me down!” The Evil Spirit, floating in midair, could sniff the scent of Evil Gods emanating from the Ghost Gate—it intoxicated him.
The difference between Evil Spirits and Evil Gods was just one word, yet their strengths seemed to vary so wildly!
As an Evil Spirit, being able to control over twenty ghosts was quite impressive; the most he could manage was three or four dozen. In contrast, an Evil God could control a village with a single curse, turning thousands of villagers into believers. If they were powerful enough, having tens of thousands of worshippers would be a walk in the park.
But that wasn’t the biggest difference. To him, the main disparity between Evil Spirits and Evil Gods was the ceiling of their power.
An Evil God’s upper limit was boundless; they could keep getting stronger endlessly, as long as they weren’t killed, anything was possible.
And right now, the realm of Evil Gods was right in front of him.
His body was already capable of birthing evil thoughts; all that was missing was the power of cursing and the elevation of his essence.
Actually, if he just wanted to become an Evil God, he was already halfway there. The embryo created from the flute was his previously chosen target, but after thinking it over multiple nights, he finally decided to let it go.
The chasm between Evil Spirits and Evil Gods was unfathomable; likewise, there were also differences among Evil Gods.
Potent Evil Gods could rise rapidly since their cursed power was easier to spread. Conversely, weaker Evil Gods found every step to be a struggle.
It goes without saying that one type of cursed energy spreads faster than the other.
To possess stronger potential after becoming an Evil God, he had to be cautious with the embryo.
“This is the place; I’ve struck gold without lifting a finger.”
The courtyard at the Ghost Gate was right up ahead; the Evil Spirit randomly possessed the body of a Red-clothed ghost, floating up to the roof of a nearby three-story building.
From her vantage point, the entire courtyard lay before her eyes.
Nearby, dozens of Ghosts surrounded her, waiting for his command to attack.
“This guy is Spider’s helper?”
Eyes narrowed, the Evil Spirit stared at the figure sitting leisurely on the bl**d-threaded bench in the center of the courtyard.
After a careful look, nothing special stood out; the pressure on him was even less than what Spider exerted.
“Hmph, is she waiting for me?”
Bai Yu sat in the chair, one hand resting on the hilt of her sword while the other propped up her chin, a posture that seemed downright taunting to the Evil Spirit.
“Not realized I’m here yet?”
The Evil Spirit raised a hand, and at his thought, all the Ghosts rushed in through various walls of the courtyard, except for behind Bai Yu where the bl**d threads wrapped around the house—no Ghost could enter—but in front of her, several directions quickly filled with a jumble of Evil Ghosts.
These Evil Ghosts weren’t exactly easy on the eyes; most retained the state they were in at d*ath. If someone died gracefully, they might look slightly better; if the cause of d*ath was anything else, well, no need to elaborate on what they looked like now.
Those who passed away due to illness or natural causes usually had little to no resentment, and they might not even form ghosts at all, their souls simply dissipating.
To become an Evil Ghost, most had rather unkind causes of d*ath.
Faced with such a horrifying scene, Bai Yu’s expression beneath the cold mask didn’t change in the slightest.
Fingers tightening around the sword hilt, this simple gesture was like a signal; all the Evil Ghosts wasted no time and charged toward Bai Yu, claws outstretched, overflowing with resentment as if they were eager to tear her apart.
On the adjacent rooftop, the Evil Spirit thought he could already see the outcome. His attention wasn’t even on Bai Yu, but rather on the house where the Ghost Gate was, quietly sensing the changes within.
Suddenly, he seemed to hear a sound.
Buzz!
The pure resentment forming black mist in the courtyard erupted, and the Evil Spirit turned to glance only to see the courtyard filled with resentment. More than twenty ghosts had only six remaining alive, all of them in red clothes. Even so, their fate wasn’t any better, being thrown aside by six thick tendrils formed from the red bl**d threads.
The Masked Person had vanished without a trace.
This sudden shift took the Evil Spirit by surprise; he twisted his head to glance around but found no trace of Bai Yu.
All he could see was a bl**d thread connecting the courtyard to the building he was in.
“You’ve been duped,” a chill voice suddenly rang out from behind. The Evil Spirit froze mid-motion and turned his head to see a silver-white, exquisite mask that had somehow appeared beside him.
Startled, the Evil Spirit’s essence instantly separated from the Red-clothed ghost and floated into the air, distancing himself from Bai Yu.
A living person had silently approached within three meters of her—how was that even possible?!
The truth was right in front of him, leaving no room for doubt.
“Still not feeling it? The people from Ghost Domain sent you here to d*e.”
Bai Yu, wielding her long sword, turned and looked up at the Evil Spirit in the sky. bl**d threads emerged from the ground, capturing the Red-clothed body and tossing it down carelessly like garbage.
“The flute was from those in Ghost Domain, right? Care to guess why they’ve never given it before, opting now and even blowing it twice in a row?”
“You’re transforming; you either d*e here as food for the Evil Gods or become the dog of Ghost Domain.”
No matter how he twisted it, something seemed off about this Evil Spirit and the Evil God from the Ghost Gate.
So Bai Yu decided to give this guy a choice.
Either to be chopped to pieces or walk away right now.
“Food? A dog?”
The Evil Spirit, wrapping himself in the courtyard’s resentment, attached his essence to one of the Red-clothed Evil Ghosts. He raised a hand and plunged his ghostly claws into another Red-clothed body, visibly draining its life until it completely vanished.
Continuing this same method, Bai Yu had long since stepped onto the bl**d threads and returned to the courtyard.
A kick soared toward the Evil Spirit, who casually tossed aside the Red-clothed ghost in his grasp, a smile on his face as if Bai Yu’s move was nothing but a gaping flaw he could easily exploit.
Reaching out to grab Bai Yu’s ankle, he didn’t anticipate that Bai Yu’s other leg would suddenly gain strength, propelling her into the air and cutting through his arm as she spun. She landed with barely a sound; all the Evil Spirit saw was a flash of light as his body was cleaved diagonally, a swarm of blade marks filling the wound.
In the blink of an eye, the injury healed, and Bai Yu’s blade was already coming for him again.
The wailing sound the blade made as it cut through the air was chilling; this strike felt slow to the Evil Spirit, yet it also carried an inescapable sense of urgency, because by the time his brain processed what was happening, his head was already soaring through the air.
He was thinking about reverting to his mist form, but to his amazement, bl**d threads erupted from the wound, absorbing large amounts of his strength and exploding forth.
Black mist-shaped ghostly claws came crashing from both sides, and Bai Yu forcefully stomped the ground, her silhouette vanishing into thin air, then reappearing behind the Evil Spirit. Her long sword rose above her head as several circular blade lights flickered around, gathering for a split second before unleashing another circular wave of cutting energy that cleaved through the bizarre manifestations of over a dozen Evil Spirits.
These manifestations turned to smoke, swiftly regrouping. During this brief clash, the Evil Spirit could see Bai Yu’s expression change entirely.
For some reason, he felt as if his very underwear had been completely exposed.
“More votes, please! Whaaaa!”
