Chapter Twenty-Six: Are All the Girls Around Me Trying to k*ll Me?
Even though she had turned into a girl—no, more precisely, into a female ghost—Bai Yu remained clueless about the art of styling. Back in her previous life, these things didn’t matter to her at all; hair was just hair as long as it wasn’t long enough to interfere with combat. Any hairstyle would do.
The same went for her outfits. She never considered whether what she wore looked good; she only thought about whether it helped her. Therefore, most of the time, she sported a long leather coat paired with boots.
The main purpose of the leather coat was to hide her hidden weapons, while the boots were simple and brutal—high damage when kicking people. She even specially added steel spikes to the heels.
For her, the new identity didn’t really call for any grooming, but it wasn’t the same for other players in the game.
Letting this group of crazies run rampant was one thing, but asking them to style themselves like pretty girls to seduce the male protagonist? That was just asking for trouble; they really couldn’t handle it.
Take Jason, who morphed into Xia Han for instance. That guy smeared something on his face that looked like gibberish.
Thinking of this, Bai Yu couldn’t help but take a closer look at herself in the mirror.
Her previously disheveled long hair was now tidy, shiny, and smooth. She had a slight natural wave, but it didn’t affect the hairstyle that Zhao Mingyue had carefully prepared for her.
Zhao Mingyue’s initial attempt at a scorpion braid had loosened. This complex style didn’t suit Bai Yu’s face; let’s just say it left a lot to be desired.
So, keeping it simple, she parted her hair down the middle, tied it with two red bows, and voilà! A perfect low double ponytail was achieved. A quick tweak to her bangs, and it was flawless, transforming Bai Yu’s aura one hundred and eighty degrees.
So, what Bai Yu saw in the mirror was a cute girl with twin low ponytails—hardly an image that screamed “evil ghost,” but let’s just say they weren’t exactly besties.
Previously, she had disheveled hair, pale bluish skin, veins that looked like black cracks, a bl**d-stained white dress, and black claws. That definitely gave off more of a ghostly vibe, creating a heavy sense of oppression.
However, looking at her now, enemies would probably take one glance and think, “Isn’t that just some little girl wandering around here, blissfully unaware she’s playing in dangerous territory?”
‘At least this way, I might lower their guard. After all, no enemy would think I could pose any threat.’ Bai Yu sighed internally, trying to comfort herself.
As she pondered, the reflection in the mirror appeared to gaze down, and although she had no whites to her eyes, her expression hinted that she might be deep in thought, making others instinctively want to lighten her load a bit.
“Oh ho ho, see? Girls really need to dress up a bit!” Zhao Mingyue twirled around Bai Yu, making strange noises.
She truly had an epiphany; even though she was somewhat prepared, seeing Bai Yu looking so spruced up still stunned her.
Nobody had informed her that a fierce ghost could pull off this look!
“I kind of regret it now,” Zhao Mingyue said, leaning in closer to Bai Yu, as they both observed themselves in the mirror.
Bai Yu tilted her head slightly as Zhao Mingyue continued seriously, “I should’ve interacted with this world sooner, gotten to know you earlier, and dressed you up sooner.”
“Bai Yu-jie—uh, no, Bai Yu-meimei, do you think this looks good?” Zhao Mingyue giggled, her cheeky smile beaming.
She had previously thought Bai Yu looked older, hence calling her “sister,” but now, with this look, she clearly resembled a cute little sister.
Generally, ghosts have terrifying faces, but Bai Yu was different. With her skin tone and eyes aside, she looked just like any regular person. Her youthful appearance, combined with her petite figure and this hairstyle, made her seem even younger—she almost looked under fifteen!
Calling her “sister” in this state felt somewhat inappropriate.
“It’s alright,” Bai Yu replied, truly at a loss for words.
“Mm-hmm, as long as you like it! We can try different hairstyles in the future. Don’t you worry, I’ve got your hairstyles covered. Not just hairstyles, but clothing too…” Zhao Mingyue suddenly froze, caught in a train of thought.
She could indeed handle the hairstyles, but clothes? That was another story.
She was too broke to buy any!
As everyone knows, the cuter the clothes, the pricier they are.
“Eh heh heh, um, let’s forget about the clothes; I can’t afford them. But I can guarantee you’ll be satisfied with your hairstyles!”
Bai Yu stayed silent, feeling more exhausted than if she had just fought a powerful enemy.
As Zhao Mingyue rambled on, she suddenly remembered something. “Wait a sec, Miss Rabbit is still in the washing machine.”
Earlier, while showering, Zhao Mingyue had washed the rabbit plush toy too and tossed it in for a spin.
When she pulled Miss Rabbit out and gave her a gentle tap, most of the bl**d stains faded, leaving just a few prints; the dirt was thoroughly washed away.
“By the way, I cleaned the rabbit plush! She should be a little cleaner now—got rid of all the remaining dirt,” she said, tugging on Miss Rabbit’s ear and hanging her out on the balcony.
Bai Yu frowned slightly as Zhao Mingyue continued, “Tonight, on the fifth floor, it was all thanks to Miss Rabbit’s courage that I made it. I think I should take better care of her and give her a bath.”
“Hey, the police are here.”
Zhao Mingyue leaned over to take a peek and not only saw the police but also the swaying figure of Lu Liangting.
Lu Liangting had made it out alive and even called the police.
·
In that moment, Lu Liangting sat in the police car, contemplating how to answer their questions.
Calling the police was something he often did during missions since he sometimes encountered crazies who were still human and not ghosts—only the police could deal with them.
His past missions were usually nothing but a breeze, but this time was different.
His cousin Xia Han had died in the hallway.
The cause of d*ath was unknown, but it was certain she had been attacked by something.
He knew almost for certain it was the ghosts in that building’s doing, and the reason he called the police was to catch that raincoat man.
That guy was a lunatic; he had murdered his wife in that building.
He had seen all of this very clearly in the memories of the female ghost.
“Sigh, I wonder how she’s doing.”
A graceful figure flashed through his mind, and Lu Liangting felt that if he had a chance, he must thank her. If it weren’t for her, he wouldn’t know how many times he would’ve died—regardless of whether things were fine upfront, he’d eventually perish in the memories of the female ghost.
“I wonder if I’ll ever get to see her again.”
Lu Liangting mumbled to himself just then, a delicate arm rested on the police car’s back window, and a soft, feminine voice followed, “Lu Liangting, I need your help with something.”
