### Chapter 263: Poor Old Yang, Bai Yu’s Rescue
To be honest, Lu Liangting hadn’t felt this thrill in a while—being chased by an Evil Ghost with a high probability of immediate d*ath upon catching up. Running faster might just give him a sliver of hope for escape.
He reminisced about his early days in this world, where he’d often find himself fleeing from Evil Ghosts or creepy Red Clothes in mission locations, simply because he lacked experience.
Maybe he was just lucky—surviving all those reckless times now seemed like a miracle.
As he picked up tasks later on, he learned to stay calm, taking careful steps and paying attention to details. The phase of running for his life from Evil Ghosts was behind him.
But here he was again, needing to lure a Spider away with his own body. If he didn’t, things could get way more dangerous. If this Spider was this powerful, how much stronger would the Black Sun Godmother in the Ghost Gate be once it absorbed the Spider’s strength?
“Run faster! If that thing catches up with us, we’re dead!” Old Yang shouted beside him, practically flying as he utilized his required skills as an Evil Ghost.
Ghosts can fly, but not necessarily high. Just getting off the ground even half a meter can significantly boost speed. Ordinarily, Old Yang wouldn’t want to do this—it would tarnish his image, in his words.
“I know!” Lu Liangting quickly changed directions as a flurry of spears whizzed past him, nearly grazing his body before embedding themselves into the ground behind.
If he were any closer, he might have been skewered—what a way to spice things up!
Old Yang got pinned by several spears, but he was okay thanks to his ghostly healing powers. They, however, weren’t so lucky. A hit would leave Lu Liangting not dead, but incredibly close to it.
The Spider had covered the space between the houses with large swathes of black silk, moving quickly on its eight legs. With a swift motion, it launched a spear that pierced through and sent the Little Ghost perched on Lu Liangting’s head flying away with a scream, poofing into a cloud of black mist.
Lu Liangting almost cried. His ability to dodge the Spider’s spear wasn’t due to skill or luck; it was all thanks to that Little Ghost, which had given him a heads-up. He knew to dodge as soon as the Spider pulled its spear back.
“Store Manager, what do we do now? We can’t hold out much longer; can we fight it head-on?” Lu Liangting yelled while running.
Li Tianan wasn’t in a great state either. With his lower physical abilities compared to Lu Liangting, he was also lugging around his suitcase, which had already left a gaping wound on his shoulder from a spear that nearly ruined him. If it had gone just a notch deeper, he’d be done for.
Even with bl**d gushing from his shoulder, he continued to run, flecks of crimson splattering the ground behind him.
“Let’s skip the head-on battle; that thing will wipe the floor with us. I can’t help you; your two Red Clothes can’t hold it off either.”
What could they do? This Spider was clearly a master at the game of kite flying, using its incredible speed and long-range attacks to keep them at bay. There was no chance of getting close without being skewered several times.
And worse, they had no clue about the Spider’s close-range capabilities. Just because it was throwing spears now didn’t mean it couldn’t dish out solid melee damage too. Those swirling black threads? No one would believe those were weak in close combat.
“So, I’m just supposed to keep running?” Lu Liangting asked.
“What else?” The Store Manager said, then suddenly felt something and accelerated, rolling forward with quick precision. He popped back up and continued running.
Three spears clanged into the ground where he had just been and then vanished. Moreover, one spear that resembled a two-meter-long halberd shot out with a sound that made toothaches seem minor.
Boom! It slammed into the ground and exploded, sending shards flying in all directions in a 360-degree attack.
Just like that, Lu Liangting got caught in the chaos, with at least seven or eight spikes sticking into him. After pulling out three, he felt the others dissolve into his body, spreading like poison and leaving dark marks that only got worse.
“Lu, are you okay?”
“Not at all!” Lu Liangting groaned, feeling miserable.
Then came the worst news: to get to the small plaza they aimed for, they had to traverse a densely populated area full of houses. Meanwhile, the Spider spread its black threads and sped up ahead of them.
“Old Yang!”
“I got this!” Old Yang enveloped himself in a cloud of black mist, soaring towards the Spider and knocking its spears away with bl**d threads.
Landed on a roof, he wasted no time in charging at the Spider.
Ranged attacks were out; it was time for close combat!
bl**d threads surged from various angles toward the Spider. But the next moment, Old Yang realized how tough this Spider was in close combat.
The Spider caught a spear made of black silk, swinging it with a whoosh.
“Roar!” The Spider screamed, elegantly sweeping through the air with the spear, severing Old Yang’s bl**d threads like they were nothing.
Old Yang was just about to close in. If he hadn’t reacted in time, the spear would’ve smashed him to bits—its tip was less than ten centimeters from him.
Old Yang looked up, pausing.
The Spider stepped forward, aiming the spear at him. He dodged just in time as it pierced through beside him, quickly retreating.
The Spider lifted its spear diagonally again and aimed for him. With a quick retraction and some footwork, it spun and stored energy with the spear on its shoulder.
Let’s face it—Old Yang wasn’t the only one feeling the pressure; even Lu Liangting and Li Tianan, watching from below, were wide-eyed.
With all that stored energy, the spear struck faster than lightning; Old Yang couldn’t dodge. He was slammed, flying off with an intensity that left a trail of resentment behind him, vanishing from Lu Liangting’s sight.
As Old Yang flew through the air, tiles beneath the Spider burst into pieces, creating a spectacle alongside the renegade Spider clutching the spear. The visual impact was colossal.
Lu Liangting stood there dumbfounded, slowing his running reflexively. Old Yang completely vanished, and he could only murmured silent prayers for him.
Old Yang was definitely alive; he could sense that much. But even if he was okay, he wouldn’t be in great shape.
Li Tianan chuckled bitterly. “See? What did I say? In close combat, we’re no match for them.”
Anything capable of putting the fear of God into an Evil Spirit on the verge of transformation couldn’t just be tossing spears from rooftops.
“Store Manager, let’s stop talking and figure out a plan.”
“The plaza is just ahead. Once we get there, let’s try to stall for a bit until Bai Yu arrives. My only concern now is whether Bai Yu can handle the Spider,” Li Tianan said, his expression serious.
Although Bai Yu was strong, the Spider was no pushover. From earlier, that demonstration against Old Yang looked like child’s play!
Let’s not say it might lose; even a stalemate would be troublesome.
Time was ticking; too many villagers were under mysterious control. If they didn’t take out the Evil God quickly, the body count would soar.
Tomorrow would be the day for nationwide headlines—now that would be a disaster!
“She should manage! I believe in Bai Yu!”
Lu Liangting said this, though with uncertain confidence. He didn’t doubt Bai Yu could beat the Spider; it was the thought of them both wounding each other and getting picked off by the Ghost Domain folks that kept him up at night.
By now, they reached the plaza, the one upside being it was spacious enough to limit the Spider’s black threads, giving them better chances to evade its spear attacks.
But that sounded good in theory.
The pressing issue remained: they had a solution for ranged attacks, but what about melee?
In the middle of the plaza, both stopped, their breaths heavy.
The Spider dropped from above, a long spear in one hand.
With its slender, towering frame, that horrifyingly twisted posture, and six eyes flashing with madness, it marched toward them, exuding a pressure that was off the charts.
The Spider, not one for much banter, shifted from a leisurely stroll to a breakneck sprint, mumbling something under its breath.
“Little Moon, Little Moon…”
With a thrust of its spear, Lu Liangting and Li Tianan rolled to the sides to evade. The Store Manager hurled some soul nails that were effortlessly brushed aside by the Spider’s spear.
The spear plunged into the ground with a ferocious thrust, and Li Tianan rolled to avoid the follow-up strike.
As the Spider prepared for another attack, a red figure leaped in—that was the other Red Clothes from Lu Liangting
But no luck; it got sent flying after a few exchanges. Lu Liangting executed a kick to the Spider’s head, which only made it take half a step back.
One of its back arms grabbed Lu Liangting’s ankle and threw him away, while another arm shot a spear at his landing spot, flowing with grace.
Lu Liangting slapped the ground, absorbing some force as he staggered backward. One thrust landed just three centimeters from his legs.
Cold sweat dripped from his forehead; he felt numb all over.
If he hadn’t reacted so quickly, he’d have been skewered. If he had activated that power even a bit more, he’d probably have had to say goodbye to one of his organs!
“Moon…” The Spider lowered its head, showing a mouthful of sharp teeth, releasing black mist into the air.
It hefted the spear onto its shoulder, twisting and changing footwork, using its whole body’s strength to swing the spear.
This move—the very one they’d just seen!
Old Yang, being a ghost, had some immunity to physical attacks, but they didn’t have that luxury.
If that spear landed, it wasn’t just a matter of life or d*ath—it would scatter their bodies everywhere, requiring a shovel to gather what was left!
In literal terms, their bodies would be “exploded.”
Their bodies wanted to dodge. Danger sensors were firing on all cylinders! But the Spider’s movements were too swift; their brains couldn’t catch up, not a chance to escape.
The spear came crashing down at an angle, the sheer force sending chills down their spines. Lu Liangting shut his eyes, preparing for the worst.
Boom!
A thud echoed, and the pain he expected never came. He didn’t hear cracking bones or see his guts spilled. Slowly opening his eyes, he saw a frail figure had appeared before him out of nowhere.
That silhouette? Lu Liangting recognized it all too well.
“Bai Yu…”
It was Bai Yu in her full glory, significantly shorter than the Spider.
Looking like a fourteen- or fifteen-year-old girl, she was petite, seeming almost dwarfed by the Spider’s towering frame.
But somehow, there she stood, calmly catching the Spider’s spear with one hand, not budging an inch. The winds swirled around her, lifting her hair and skirt as she gazed up at the Spider. With a flick of her wrist, the Spider’s weapon was sent flying and pierced the ground, forcing the Spider to retreat several steps.
Lu Liangting sprang up, “Bai Yu…”
He felt incredibly lucky in that moment.
Every time he found himself in peril, Bai Yu appeared like a guardian angel—a twist of fate that seemed too perfect!
Whether it was in the Sunshine Apartment, Eternal Life Village, the insane asylum, or even now!
It couldn’t be that Bai Yu was purposefully stalling; she just happened to show up in the nick of time.
Was it a kind of destiny?
Lu Liangting turned his head to notice someone standing beside him—caught off guard by the silver white mask.
“Don’t be scared; it’s me, Zhao Mingyue,” the masked figure said, voice clear as a mountain spring.
“Moon?”
“Sorry I’m late; I wasted some time earlier dealing with that Evil Spirit. But fortunately, I made it just in time.”
Bai Yu turned, her form briefly flickering before merging into Zhao Mingyue.
In public view, giving Mingyue a hug would be a bit too much.
Lu Liangting took a step back, noticing the dark red in Zhao Mingyue’s eyes behind the mask, her aura and presence entirely transformed.
“How’s the Ghost Gate?” Bai Yu asked, her tone level.
“Not so great; things are a bit out of control,” Li Tianan replied, stepping forward.
“Mm.”
Seeing Bai Yu arrive eased Li Tianan’s worries.
Reflecting back, why did he think the Spider was stronger than Bai Yu?
Having seen her effortlessly divert the Spider’s spear, wasn’t that the normal outcome?
Well, back in Qiugang Village, the Spider had been scared of Bai Yu!
