Chapter 295: The Farthest Distance in the World
“How’s it going? Did you find the person you were looking for?”
In the car, the Dragon Lady glanced at the back seat through the rearview mirror. Bai Yu sat there, and for some reason, her leather jacket had been swapped out for a black dress. Zhao Mingyue was smiling and hugging Bai Yu’s arm, wearing a grin fit for a game champion, as if she couldn’t wait to glue herself to Bai Yu.
Just what had these two been up to during her short absence to go as far as changing clothes?
“I found her, but she’s being controlled by the Dark Moon God. I thought her soul would have long vanished, but judging by the current situation, she might still have a soul left,” Bai Yu said, turning to gaze out the window, carefully observing everything around them on the way back.
It looked pretty much the same as the world behind the Ghost Gate; the details were strikingly similar.
“That’s good news! We can take out the Dark Moon God and save her soul. Even if she turns into a ghost, at least we can reunite!” said the Dragon Lady.
“The world behind the Ghost Gate is like a projection of the real world; the general conditions are the same. After I left the village where the Ghost Gate is located, I followed the Dark Moon God’s aura and eventually ended up in the city,” Bai Yu continued.
“Every building is the same, the roads we travel are the same—like this one we’re on now.”
“In that world, there are many evil ghosts, and the power they transformed into after d*ath has returned to the world. I suspect that world influences the real world to some degree. The task sites that exist in the real world might just be a result of that.”
“I’m not surprised,” the Dragon Lady said, pointing out the window. “The world itself has a form of spiritual energy; it’s an abstract concept, but I think you two understand. And then the world’s spiritual energy constructed another world, which is all linked to that energy. I was wondering about it before, and now it’s been confirmed.”
“So since the Dark Moon God is in the city, she should be near a Ghost Gate, right?”
As soon as those words left her mouth, Zhao Mingyue perked up. The Dark Moon God was so powerful; she thought she would be in a place like Eternal Life Village.
“She’s likely in the city center, where the population is highest,” Zhao Mingyue said.
“That’s a possibility. I agree with the jealous little vinegar jar here.” Bai Yu didn’t plan to keep them guessing. “I initially thought the Dark Moon God would be in Eternal Life Village, but instead, she’s at Sunshine Apartment, where Mingyue and I currently live.”
Zhao Mingyue’s eyes instantly widened as she looked at Bai Yu, her expression filled with confusion. “Why is she in Sunshine Apartment?”
“Not only is she there, but the specific room she’s in is Room 404.”
“Room 404!?” Zhao Mingyue’s voice hit a few high notes.
Was she really living with a terrifying monster all along without even realizing it? As an old tenant of Room 404, Zhao Mingyue found it quite creepy. But then she thought, this was truly cruel for Bai Yu. The sister she had been searching for was under the same roof as her, yet separated by two worlds.
You’re right next to me, but I can’t see you, hear you, or touch you.
That must be the farthest distance in the world.
Silence fell inside the car. Why was the Dark Moon God in Room 404? The answer was glaringly obvious; she was clearly after Bai Yu.
“What are you planning to do during this time?” the Dragon Lady changed the subject.
“First, I’ll need to expel the negative thoughts from my body, and then gather some belief power.”
“Belief power, huh? Isn’t that the exact opposite of the Dark Moon God’s power?”
“Yep.”
“So do you need any help from me?”
“Not at all.”
“Wow, you really are something. Forget it, I’ll just handle it myself.”
Bai Yu’s plans were straightforward: stay away from here, gather believers from the various Ghost Gates around the world, and boost her belief power.
The Dragon Lady was right; belief power was indeed opposite to the Dark Moon God’s power, but it wasn’t specifically aimed at her. Belief power had no attributes and was just effective against the Dark Moon God, which was the best way she’d found so far to take her on.
Plus, it meant staying away from here, preventing Nightmare from continuing to stir up trouble.
She didn’t want to clash with Nightmare just yet; there was no need until she could crush Nightmare effortlessly.
The car stopped in front of the Sunshine Apartment. The Dragon Lady rolled down the window and peered at the building, finger stroking her chin. “This building of yours seems pretty disaster-prone. I remember the jealous little vinegar jar said she met you because of the ghost haunting this very building, right?”
“Yep, without Bai Yu, I would’ve been toast.” Zhao Mingyue stretched as she got out of the car.
“Alright, I’ll head back now. You two enjoy your lovey-dovey time; I won’t be a third wheel. But if you want me to stay, little vinegar jar won’t mind a few more people around.”
“Go on, go on! I mind a lot!”
“Tch.”
The Dragon Lady drove off, leaving Zhao Mingyue standing there. She looked up at the fourth floor and wondered, “Bai Yu, when you first appeared, were you always on Mr. Rabbit?”
“Mhm.”
Bai Yu told a little white lie; she didn’t mention she probably had originally been in the world behind the Ghost Gate.
It was pointless to say anything; it would only worry Zhao Mingyue.
Back in her room, Zhao Mingyue opened the door. “Where does the Dark Moon God sleep? Please tell me it’s not in our bedroom. Is her room the same as mine?”
“No, her room is just darkness. She’s in the center.”
“So that’s the living room?” Zhao Mingyue glanced at the white fox sprawled on the couch watching television and couldn’t help but imagine the Dark Moon God might be riding on that silly fox’s head.
“Hey, don’t overthink it! Si Si’s soul is still there; that gives us hope. Work hard! I believe one day she’ll come back!”
“Then she can see all the beautiful dresses her sister has now!”
Thinking of that, Zhao Mingyue couldn’t help but plan for the future.
Bai Yu was about to gather believers, meaning she would become that Black Sun God, flying up into the sky to shine a light on those ghosts.
Well then, wouldn’t she have to wear something absolutely gorgeous?
After all, good looks also count in boosting believers’ hearts.
Bai Yu stood at the door, reminiscing about the world behind the Ghost Gate. She had been standing in this exact spot then.
Just as she thought that, she caught a glimpse of Zhao Mingyue’s smile out of the corner of her eye.
For some reason, that smile gave her a bad feeling.
