Chapter 68: Your Sister is My Sister
“What’s up with today’s staff? Did they have a personnel change?”
“Hey, don’t get me wrong, that girl is really pretty, just too pale. She hardly looks human, and those lines on her skin…”
“Maybe it’s a skin condition? That’s no problem! She gives off that sickly beauty vibe, don’t you think?”
“Honestly, it does have a certain appeal. I’m into that half-dead look.”
“Pervert alert!”
“Hey! You better clear that up today! If you can’t, you ain’t my bro anymore! What do you mean, ‘pervert’? That girl is definitely a young lady!”
The boys’ banter drifted away as Bai Yu, standing behind the counter, let out a subtle sigh, especially when his peripheral vision caught the sight of Zhao Mingyue drooling as she snoozed atop the counter.
Hearing her mumble about “red envelope salary,” Bai Yu didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
No reaction at all when he called her earlier. Maybe it’s best to let her sleep; she was really tired after all—staying up all night takes its toll.
Using the bl**d Thread, he nudged the camera that could see their side, then popped back up to help out. Once the customers left, he slipped back into Zhao Mingyue’s shadow, adjusting the camera back. It was like a well-rehearsed routine.
Oblivious to the morning’s antics, Zhao Mingyue, still half-asleep, finally opened her eyes around ten-thirty, just as the third batch of customers rolled in.
Noticing the drool at the corner of her mouth, she swiftly grabbed a tissue and wiped it away, then pressed it against the drool stain on the table, acting like nothing happened while smiling at the customer in front of her.
The customer looked young, probably around twenty.
Dressed in trendy attire, particularly those suspenders, he gave off a somewhat femboy vibe.
He glanced around, seeming hesitant to speak, clearly feeling a bit shy.
He was clutching his phone, which displayed the latest trendy messaging app.
He had come to find Bai Yu but had ventured far enough away that he thought—no, I should head back and grab her contact info.
That young lady looked relatively young, but since she worked here, she had to be an adult. If she wasn’t really an adult…
Wouldn’t that just be better?
Yet, after a fruitless search, he spotted a different staff member at the counter, who appeared half-asleep.
A good long look, and his eyes nearly bulged out.
One thought encapsulated his feelings perfectly.
He used to not believe in love at first sight, but now? He was a believer.
What kind of magical convenience store was this? Even the staff was drop-dead gorgeous!
He couldn’t decide whether this staff member or the previous one was a better match. To him, they both looked amazing.
“Well, um, I was looking for that earlier staff member, but, uh, not anymore. Can I add you as a friend?” he awkwardly asked, raising his phone to show his contact page.
“Nope,” Zhao Mingyue said, now fully awake, shaking her head. “If you need anything, just let me know, but I’m not sharing contacts because I have someone I like.”
“Ah, okay… Sorry for bothering you.”
Defeated, the young man left. As he pushed open the glass door, the little bell chimed three times—a sound he didn’t even notice as he was still drowning in rejection.
Once he was gone, Zhao Mingyue murmured, “Why did the bell ring? Does he have a ghost on him?”
“Wait, the earlier staff member…?”
Nibbling her chin, Zhao Mingyue glanced at her phone; it was already ten-thirty.
“Yu, that staff member he mentioned, it wasn’t you, right?”
“Yep, it’s me. Can’t exactly say that sleepyhead over there wakes up easy,” Bai Yu replied, his voice sounding a bit resentful.
Zhao Mingyue blushed, chuckling awkwardly, “Ahem, I didn’t mean to!”
“I know. If you had meant to, you wouldn’t have been drooling all over.”
“I didn’t drool! Where? You must have seen wrong!”
After cleaning up the drool mark, Zhao Mingyue pulled out Miss Rabbit and tugged at the plush toy’s little face.
“By the way, thanks for covering my shift. I’ve never felt my eyelids so heavy!”
Having a ghost helping her out in the middle of the day and catching the attention of a customer was kind of embarrassing for Zhao Mingyue.
After a long silence, she splashed some water on her face and returned to find the rabbit plush toy looking up at her, knowing Bai Yu had slipped back into the toy.
“Yu, after I finish my tasks, the phone gave me a chance to enter a raffle. Should I go for it?”
“Sure, try it when we get back tonight.”
“Right! What if we don’t manage to find Xiao Lian’s child this time?”
Zhao Mingyue hadn’t forgotten their trip to Thirteen Middle School; that was just one part of it, the main mission was to locate Ghost Xiao Lian’s child.
If they didn’t sort that out, they’d be stuck with an eternal mess. She lived in Bright Sun Apartment, and waking up to Xiao Lian’s terrifying ghost face wasn’t on her to-do list!
“Doesn’t matter, Lu Liangting will handle it.”
“Oh, okay then.”
“……”
More silence passed. Playing with the rabbit plush, Zhao Mingyue suddenly asked, “Last night felt really off. Did something happen? Something about your past?”
She had no clue about Bai Yu’s past and didn’t dare pry too much. She was afraid that asking too many questions might ruin the fragile relationship they had managed to build.
“It’s not my past; it’s that girl’s past.”
“Shen Shuyun?”
“Yeah, that’s her. That school is her memory, and she’s one of my old friends. I have many friends like her, so I just want to know if all my friends have such a place, including me.”
Zhao Mingyue, quick-witted, caught on right away.
He must want to see his sister again, huh?
She understood but didn’t know how to express it. After hesitating for a long while, she said, “Um… I don’t know how to comfort you, but I’m sure you will. Whenever you need me, I will be there with you. If we run into danger, we’ll face it together.”
“That place is very dangerous, and I might not be able to help you then.”
“It’s fine! I’m getting stronger! As long as I complete more tasks and boost my body, I can help you!”
Having completed two major missions—Bright Sun Apartment and Thirteen Middle School—Zhao Mingyue felt her strength skyrocket.
“Yeah… mainly, I want to personally hand Miss Rabbit over to Bai Sisi.”
As soon as she said this, the rabbit plush’s red eyes flickered gently before it lowered its head, falling silent.

Working overtime until eleven o’clock, and it was agreed—the fourth update is still the fourth!
(Mainly because I’m terrified of doing splits!)
