Chapter 9: Poor Male Protagonist, Poor Female Protagonist
Bai Yu was previously worried about how these madmen, after turning into beautiful girls, wouldn’t know each other’s identities and would be guessing like it was a game of charades. She was terrified that these guys might be hiding their true selves too well.
However, it seems she was overthinking it. This bunch genuinely had no idea how to act like real women. After all, they were once men – some not exactly in the best mental state, and all former murderers.
But I must say, the guy in front of her was putting on quite the performance, with a nauseating tone and utterly ridiculous makeup. Maybe she thought that by doing this, she would leave a lasting impression on Lu Liangting. Who wouldn’t like a delicate girl, right?
Forget Bai Yu; even Zhao Mingyue instinctively took a step back.
She ignored being called an old woman; she just felt that the girl in front of her had a vibe that was a bit… off.
The atmosphere in the convenience store was already a bit heavy because of Lu Liangting’s story, and after this girl showed up, the words that were about to spill from his lips got stuck. He turned sideways, trying to shake off the hand resting on his shoulder, but instead, he felt a chill as her gaze bore into him.
“Xia Han, I’ve told you a million times, you can’t be this rude.”
His tone was laced with exasperation as he glanced at the awkward Zhao Mingyue behind the counter. “Sorry, Mingyue, this is my cousin, Xia Han. Don’t take what she said to heart; she’s been like this since she was little—doesn’t listen to anyone.”
“N-no problem.” Zhao Mingyue shook her head lightly.
“Come on, cousin! Don’t forget our plans for tonight; we can’t waste any more time! Let’s go!” Xia Han tugged on Lu Liangting’s sleeve, dragging him toward the exit.
“Wait, I still have something to say!”
“Nope, we’re leaving. Otherwise, I’ll tell Auntie about tonight’s plans!”
“Fine, fine.” Lu Liangting was at his wit’s end; he really had no strategy against this cousin of his, and tonight’s operation was crucial.
Just before leaving, Lu Liangting made sure to shout back at Zhao Mingyue.
“Mingyue, you must remember what I said! The Sunshine Apartment has issues!”
“And whatever sound you hear tonight, do NOT go outside!”
His voice faded, accompanied by the chime of the bells on the door, which slammed shut behind him.
Zhao Mingyue was confused, instinctively looking up at the wind chimes that remained still, then turning to glance outside the door. The moment she did, her gaze met a pair of eyes that sent a shiver down her spine – the unsettling gaze of Xia Han.
She shot Zhao Mingyue a bizarre smile and then dragged Lu Liangting away.
“Those eyes are really creepy,” she murmured, pulling out her rabbit plush toy and setting it on the table. Zhao Mingyue sat down, cradling her face in her hands. “Bai Yu, do you think what Lu Liangting said was true? Could it be that the ghosts that haunt the apartment are the ones who were burned to d*ath?”
“It’s probably true. This morning, it was a female ghost targeting you.” Bai Yu replied.
“A female ghost? If it really is them, then why did they show up today of all days? They’ve never appeared before!”
Zhao Mingyue was puzzled. She had lived here for a few months and had never encountered anything like this; in fact, she had only seen ghosts once.
“It’s because of that game you played last night. It attracted the ghosts in the building.”
“Does that mean I’m in danger?” Zhao Mingyue felt a little panic rising.
“Yep.”
“Ahh, is there any way to solve this?”
Normally, when faced with the idea of being chased by vengeful spirits, one would reject such nonsense or seek every means to escape. However, Zhao Mingyue’s only hope right now was Bai Yu. In her eyes, Bai Yu was an extraordinary ghost who could fight.
“There’s a way to deal with it. I’ll tell you tonight, but it might be a bit thrilling for you.”
“As long as it can be solved,” Zhao Mingyue sighed in relief. A little thrill is just what she needed, right? Then she remembered something. “But why is Lu Liangting not letting me go outside tonight?”
“Because what he’s doing tonight is exactly the same as what you’re supposed to do.”
“Oh, I see.”
Zhao Mingyue didn’t ask further. Bai Yu promised to tell her tonight. Deep down, she was blindly trusting Bai Yu. She knew that she had no other option but to believe in her.
The whole day passed in the convenience store with barely any customers, mainly because it was in the middle of nowhere. Zhao Mingyue always wondered why the owner chose to open the shop here.
At seven o’clock, the substitute clerk arrived. Zhao Mingyue tucked her rabbit plush toy away, straightened her backpack, and pushed the door open to leave. Just like when she came, besides the bell jingling on the threshold, the nearby wind chimes swayed without wind, ringing out a sound like flowing water.
Unfazed, she hopped on her bike and raced toward the Sunshine Apartment.
In less than ten minutes, she arrived downstairs, gazing up at the apartment shrouded in the hazy night. A chill ran down her spine.
Remembering what Lu Liangting had said about the building during the day made her feel even more uneasy.
After all, she lived on the fourth floor.
Who knows, maybe someone had committed s*icide in the very room she was renting.
No wonder the rent was so cheap—only four hundred a month, way lower than everywhere else.
“Bai Yu, Sister Bai, if I run into any evil ghosts again, it’s all on you!”
She hurried upstairs, repeating her thoughts.
In the dim light of the corridor, Zhao Mingyue, with her short hair, cast a long shadow behind her, reminiscent of a long-haired woman. As she muttered to herself, the shadow flickered slightly.
For Zhao Mingyue, tonight wouldn’t be just thrilling; it should have been terrifying. What Bai Yu hadn’t told her was that this building had more than one ghost inhabiting it. How many? Who knows? But it was enough to be labeled a “ghost apartment.”
I have to say, Zhao Mingyue really had some strong luck. Living in such a building for so long without incident, and only now did things start to go sideways.
But it turned out to be a blessing in disguise for her; she could grow stronger by devouring the ghosts. The ghosts in this building could serve as her nutrition.
Without encountering any walls of ghosts, she dashed to the fourth floor.
Just as she was about to take her keys out to unlock the door, she felt someone above watching her.
Looking up, the figure vanished in an instant.
Frowning, Zhao Mingyue opened the door and stepped inside.
What used to feel like a cozy little room now felt dark and cold.

She had intended to resume updates these past few days, but who knew that once her fever broke, her throat would start to hurt like someone was slicing it open? After enduring two days, her throat got better, but then she began coughing non-stop.
In total, she’d gotten less than ten hours of sleep over several days. On average, it was less than four hours a day—totally miserable.
Today, the coughing was so bad that she went to the hospital for a lung CT. She wasn’t sure if she would update at night, but everyone please rest assured! As soon as the author recovers, she’ll deliver three updates a day to make up for the lost ones!
