In the pitch-black night, a special visitor arrived in Modo City. As she stepped off a warship, the surrounding guard squad couldn’t help but steal glances at her.
The reason was simple; she was incredibly eye-catching.
Even though she wore a black cloak outside and a loose dark robe inside, it couldn’t hide her outstanding figure, which was far more voluptuous and taller than that of an average woman. Even the tall guards seemed to appear shorter in her presence. This was a woman whose extraordinary charm radiated even if her face was hidden; her fair hands were adorned with black silk gloves, and the little skin exposed was as smooth and pale as a baby’s. Beside her were high-ranking officials of Modo City, cautiously and fearfully welcoming her to the city’s residence.
“Stop staring!”
Patrol Captain Kana slapped one of his subordinates who was drooling at the sight. Even without seeing her face, the guards were as if mesmerized, and he coldly said, “That is a distinguished guest headed to the inner city, not someone you lot can fantasize about. And if I’m not mistaken, that woman is obviously a sorcerer. She’s very dangerous.”
Kana was a veteran soldier, and his instincts led him to guess the woman’s profession.
Such exceptional charisma could only belong to a sorcerer. Even without seeing her face, the aura alone could influence others.
The tall woman walked forward with the officials.
Her stature was so tall, probably over 1.85 meters, making her exceptionally noticeable as she walked. Wearing black high-heeled boots, she stood a head taller than most men. Her expression seemed casual, but observant people could notice a hint of tension; she seemed to casually observe everything in Modo Harbor, but there was still a faint look of shock. Even though she had heard about all of this from spies, seeing the changes in Modo City with her own eyes was still astonishing. The rapid transformation here was beyond her imagination.
The broad road was paved with cement, unaffected by rain or wind, wide enough for ten horse-drawn carriages to pass side by side.
This was a road not found even in the royal city.
From the port area to the inner city, rows of crystal streetlights, such an expensive luxury, were casually built along the sides of the road, and they seemed to have been there for quite some time. Even at night, the port area was not desolate; the residents of Modo had long since adapted to enjoying drinks or looking for other forms of entertainment after nightfall, such as the now ubiquitous bathhouses. The residents loved this; the low prices encouraged them to become cleaner, and they looked down with disdain and pride at the dirty appearances of outsiders. The pride of Modo had seeped into the very bones of its residents, and they were proud to identify themselves as citizens of Modo.
“What is that?”
Along the way, the things she saw had already surprised the Duchess of Red Dragon, but when she saw a civilian open a metal pipe and clear water flowed out instantly, she couldn’t help but ask in confusion.
A man who appeared to be an official cautiously answered, “This is a water supply pipe.”
“The unified water supply system in Modo City has only been laid out to this point, and residents pay about ten Copper each month to meet their water needs for a month.”
Even under the cover of darkness, Modo City looked clean and organized.
Not many residents used tap water; most of them were fairly well-off, and ten Copper was within their means, primarily because it was very convenient. As for other residents, they relied on well water, which they needed to fetch specially, and it was clear they were somewhat envious and wished to use such convenient water source.
The pursuit of new things also represented a status symbol; most residents in Modo City who couldn’t afford tap water were generally of recently acquired status.
Noticing that the Duchess of Red Dragon was curious about these matters, the nearby officials, at the nod of their leader, began to introduce with prideful enthusiasm: “Over here is the streetlights, used for lighting at night, and also for festivals and celebrations. Over there is the aqueduct, these are drainage ditches that directly connect to the sewers; no other city in the material plane has as large a sewer system as Modo City.”
“It seems there are some goblins and gremlins that have recently wandered in due to the area’s vastness.”
“Here is the residential area, all constructed with bricks and tiles, sturdier than houses in other cities and not particularly vulnerable to fire. Over there is the workers’ district, the second batch of buildings, consisting of two-story houses. The library there contains hundreds of thousands of books. Further on is the museum, which houses many precious artifacts. Beside it is the theater, which has two performances every week. The largest building to the south is the academy, which currently has over five thousand students. Over there is the green belt; in the future, trees will be planted along these roads. Recently, some druids have been strongly advocating for an increase in the scale of greening, hoping to balance nature with the city.”
The officials beside them continued to introduce, their expressions filled with pride.
He had been to many places, including major cities and royal cities, but no city was as organized, civilized, advanced, and beautiful as Modo City.
The Duchess of Red Dragon silently observed all of this.
She resided in the main city of the Rosad Duchy, but in comparison to everything she saw in Modo City, she suddenly found that the city under her rule resembled a dirty pile of excrement.
This was completely on a different level!
A faint floral fragrance wafted by. The greening of Modo City was divided into three parts: one part was managed by the City Hall, which planted flowers and plants preferred by humans; another part was led by half-elves, who enjoyed various flowers; and the largest portion was managed by the Agricultural Church and druids, who preferred to plant trees and other plants, hoping to balance the city and nature.
During this time, they were researching a new direction for the future—a city filled with greenery yet sufficiently advanced and beautiful.
By the way.
Recently, the druids had a very poor reputation in Modo City. As soon as they arrived, they took over environmental protection and greening tasks, making many residents who usually didn’t mind these things experience the stubbornness of the druids. City Hall officials also disliked them because these druids stubbornly argued about land use with them, insisting that the scale of greening should be increased.
d*mn it!
To know that Modo City’s greening was already dozens of times more than other cities, did they not understand that Modo Island was so vast and still had many places that needed to be designated for land use?
“Civilization…”
The Duchess of Red Dragon silently observed all of this and suddenly murmured two words. She finally realized the immense gap between herself and Soren.
The power of Modo City had grown to an unimaginable extent, even having surplus financial and human resources to handle things that were almost insignificant, things that should only be slightly considered, and only in times of peace.
In simple terms.
What the Duchess of Red Dragon felt throughout this journey was a sense of opulence, as if it were brazenly declaring to others.
——”The master is rich!”
——”The master’s technology tree is already advancing to civilian use!”
