Abyss Domination – Chapter 143

Chapter 131: Frozen Valley

Author: Floating Tower

A quiet night passed.

In the wilderness, if one encounters other travelers, a certain amount of coexistence is possible if communication occurs and there is no obvious hostility. Just as Soren was willing to accept Aladdin on the road, the performers of the Phantom Circus also temporarily welcomed him to stay beside them for a night after they felt he posed no danger. In this world, belief is more effective than moral constraints. Of course, the true authority lies with the woman inside the carriage, who is the real core of the circus.

As for why Soren was certain that the individual inside was a woman, it mainly stemmed from the decoration of the carriage, a faint fragrance, and a legend he had heard before. The legend stated that the Phantom Circus contained a Sea Sorceress, though no one knew exactly what the Sea Sorceress was—some speculated she was of merfolk blood, others guessed she was an underwater witch. In any case, there were many chaotic speculations, yet few knew the real answer. The performance fees of the Phantom Circus were exorbitant, and the people present would need to spend at least five to six thousand Gind.

Among similar organizations such as circuses, dance troupes, and performance groups, the Phantom Circus should have a relatively good reputation, as very few criminal activities were heard about.

Soren didn’t know much about them; in the past, he had mostly focused on the more renowned Dark Moon Circus.

In this world, there is a powerful deity known as Lady Silver Moon. The Silver Moonwalkers Soren encountered were her believers, while the Dark Moon Circus also served her, though the latter was a hidden assassin organization. They would quietly eliminate those they deemed evil during operations, representing the dark side of the moon, a group that worships a benevolent deity yet employs ruthless methods. Soren had clashed with them before he ascended to legend, losing two fingers to a terrifying clown dancer!

Even now, he still could not believe those cold-blooded killers truly worshiped Lady Silver Moon of the good faction.

Ciruses often feature individuals with special advanced professions.

The green-skinned goblin named Coin was easier to recognize; Soren could tell its advanced profession easily, but it was more difficult to gauge the others.

The only certainty was that many of them also dabbled as Bards!

Their performance skills were not low, and their acting was quite good. It was hard to discern whether the words they spoke were truth or if they were merely putting on a show.

For example, the beautiful elven girl.

Performance, deception, intimidation—these were the three foundational skills the circus excelled at. Soren had previously trained in deception there. The Drow who had trained Soren once told him, “Life is like a play. It all depends on your acting skills.”

Having performance skills of two or three hundred points meant there was real power behind it!

To be honest.

Seeing this group of people made Soren somewhat nostalgic for the “Insight” specialty he had trained in.

The circus had alternating night watchmen, and only the green-skinned goblin had not slept at all; it was not standing guard on the periphery but was crouched beside the campfire, roasting ice frogs. He didn’t know how many it had eaten throughout the night, but it seemed never to be full, with a small pile of bones left the next day. It was truly the core of vigilance within the group. Soren found it quite formidable that this advanced goblin clown could spot him from a distance, and he wasn’t confident he could defeat it.

Among mediocre races, some outstanding talents could emerge, and Soren would never underestimate anyone.

Under the morning sunlight.

The circus members began preparing breakfast. They directly melted ice and snow in pots, and the elven girl brought in a basin of hot water into the carriage.

This should have been a very ordinary action.

However, Soren attentively observed and unexpectedly discovered something.

The water carried in was hot, steaming with white vapor.

Yet when the elven girl brought it out, the water in the basin was cold, with a slight layer of floating ice evident. The time gap was less than five minutes; a basin of hot water had turned into icy water.

“Interesting.”

Soren maintained an impassive expression, drawing out his curved blade to shave. He had been traveling through the night, and his beard had grown a bit.

Coin approached with a bowl of hot soup. He glanced at Soren’s blade, the minuscule fish scale pattern reflecting the light. It looked very exquisite.

“Good blade,” it remarked, handing the hot soup to Soren.

The circus soon set off. The people inside the large carriage still did not show themselves, while the others busied themselves, appearing very well-trained. The burly orc wielded a whip to drive the pack animals. He was likely the circus’s beast tamer. However, no other wild beasts were seen; perhaps the weather was too cold to bring them. A skilled beast tamer could tame a wild beast in a day or two, ensuring it was more obedient than Druid animal companions.

The group quickly began to move forward.

Soren slightly slowed down here, preparing to pass through the Frozen Valley with them.

That place was somewhat sinister; more people made it safer.

The journey was relatively silent.

In this icy and snowy environment, it was unlikely anyone would be in high spirits.

The elven girl still wore that slightly revealing dress, her tall figure constantly moving, occasionally shouting commands for them to advance. Looking at the footprints she left in the snow, Soren estimated her agility value to be over 20 points, as there were only shallow footprints on the ground. He had no idea what special profession she had advanced to. From the rhythm and movements of her body, Soren inferred her Reflex Evasion was strong, and the advanced profession might be similar to a Shadow, likely an advancement from a Bard.

The ice layer on the ground gradually thickened.

Others’ expressions grew tense. When a valley appeared ahead, they took a brief rest before increasing their pace.

The goblin clown walked at the front of the line, looking up at the cliffs on both sides and the summit. He said in a deep voice, “There might be Ice Trolls here. Everyone should pass quickly, don’t shout loudly; if we’re unlucky enough to encounter an avalanche, we’ll be in trouble.”

Surrounding them were cliffs, covered in ice.

The elven girl stood on the cart, looking up at the sky. She might also have been gazing at the steep mountaintop, seeming to have discovered something; it likely was Ice Trolls.

Many Ice Trolls lived atop these mountains.

If food weren’t exceedingly scarce, these Ice Trolls wouldn’t often attack travelers below in the valley.

“Soren.”

The elven girl gracefully landed beside him, glancing at him, and blinked as she said, “You seem to be a knowledgeable adventurer. Since you know the legends of Arendelle, do you know why this place is called Frozen Valley?”

Was this a test?

Or did she want to learn something from him?

Soren slightly furrowed his brow. He looked at her and said, “The actual Frozen Valley is ahead; it used to be called Icewind Valley long ago.”

“It is said that a legendary battle caused the valley to be completely frozen; the ice layer there is very thick, and this ice never melts throughout the year. The people of the Frozen Kingdom do not dare to venture out, usually only traveling via the sea route for trade after spring. Druids have attempted to lift the abnormal phenomenon ahead, but it seems they failed; there is special energy existing within the Frozen Valley.”

“Be cautious later.”

“The Frozen Valley may see Elemental Life appear in winter. Generally, few people traverse it during winter.”

“Oh,” she responded.

“The real ice layer in the Frozen Valley is less than half a meter down, and its hardness is similar to diamond. Those interested can test their weapons to see if they hold up! It is said that there are treasures below, but no one has been able to break through these ice layers.”

Hearing Soren’s words, the others showed expressions of surprise.

As they continued to advance, the thickness of the ice layer grew, and almost everything in sight was covered in ice, the ground also slightly slippery. The elven girl seemed very interested in what he had said. She whispered a few words next to the goblin clown, and then quickly used a dagger to break through the ice, revealing a layer of pale blue ice at about fifty centimeters deep.

Clang!

Her dagger pierced the ice, producing a crisp sound. The goblin clown moved his hand, seemingly numbed from the impact, then exclaimed, “It really is about as hard as diamond! I’ve never heard of this before!”

There was only a shallow mark on the pale blue ice.

Soren shrugged and said, “I actually only heard this in passing, but it seems the legend is true.”

Frozen Valley.

The surface ice layer wasn’t thick, comparable to other ice, but below lay a special ice layer. Its hardness matched that of diamond. Extraordinary Weapons only left shallow marks on it; many sought to uncover its secrets beneath, but no one had ever succeeded. It was said to be sealed under something, possibly an artifact. In any case, it had lasted a long time until the “Ice and Snow Uprising” ended. The ice layer here only melted suddenly then.

The elven girl was clearly very interested; she reached out to touch the pale blue ice layer, then entered the carriage to say something.

Following that, the group continued to move forward, and the others, curious, also tried it and found the hardness of the ice layer beyond imagination!

This was something left by supernatural power.

In the biting cold wind, whispers seemed to mix, possibly an illusion, possibly real; in any case, such voices had existed for centuries.

The people of the Frozen Kingdom believed a mysterious witch resided here.

In the past, someone had explored all positions, basically finding no traces of habitation, thus concluding that the whisper-like sounds mixed with the cold wind were either the result of supernatural power or caused by the unique environmental sounds. Whenever the wind picked up in the Frozen Valley, such whisper-like sounds would emerge.

Thankfully, the journey wasn’t long; by increasing speed, they could cross it by late morning!

Along the way, they encountered no monsters.

Soren noticed that among the three carriages, only one had a thin layer of ice on it, which was the one where the leader of the Phantom Circus stayed.

From here, they began to part ways.

Soren moved toward the glacier mountains closer to the Northern Region, while they proceeded along the road to the seaside. Arendelle was an icy and snowy kingdom near the sea.

The soon-to-be-crowned Princess seemed to be a Fate Sorcerer of Legend Rank.

If he remembered correctly.

After the mysterious disappearance of the Snow Goddess, her powers went out of control for a while, completely freezing the nearby sea. Ultimately, when the “Ice and Snow Uprising” broke out, this Princess confronted the lesser deity of the Evil faction, the Winter Maiden.

It seemed the lesser deity of the Evil faction, the Whip Maiden, also joined in for this commotion.
