Sonic Attack.
One of the hardest types of attacks to defend against, and also the most troublesome for Wanderers.
Whether it’s the Berserker’s Roar, War Roar, or Fear Roar of Melee Professionists, or the Roar Spell, Infrasound, and Wail of the Banshee from Spellcasting Professionists, all these attacks are very difficult to defend against using conventional means. Unless there is a spell that provides protection against sonic attacks, the key factor in whether you can withstand such an attack is solely your Fortitude save, and whether it can pass various checks. For any sonic-type attacks, many are akin to various versions of the Lion’s Roar technique, with nearly no effective defensive measures.
Even Spellcasters can trip themselves up with this!
Once the distance closes, if a War Roar suddenly hits without prior spell buffs, solely relying on the caster’s frail constitution to pass a Fortitude save is almost impossible.
In fact!
At this moment, even Soren couldn’t completely pass the Fortitude save.
The roaring sonic waves left him dizzy, as if a cannonball had exploded right beside him, causing his eardrums to bleed slightly. Although he didn’t faint, Soren was in a very poor state, barely able to evade the attack of the Bear Spirit, which had directly sent him flying seven or eight meters away.
Thud!
Soren’s figure hit the ground, his chest slightly caved in, with at least seven or eight ribs likely broken. If it weren’t for the protective energy of the Stone Skin spell still on him, this blow could have dealt nearly a hundred points of damage. Just as Soren had recovered some health with Vampire’s Touch, his overall state had now entered a seriously injured status. However, this attack also woke him up, and without even thinking, he activated a legendary item while awkwardly dodging the second attack like a lazy donkey rolling.
——”Summon Earth Elemental!”
——”Summon Shadow!”
A portal connecting to the elemental plane quickly appeared, and a heavy Earth Elemental manifested in front of him.
Bang!
The Earth Elemental smashed its fist down on the Bear Spirit, temporarily drawing its attention. Meanwhile, amidst the distorted shadows, a seemingly humanoid Shadow appeared, directly pouncing on the Bear Spirit to launch an attack. The speed with which Soren cast both summoning spells was quite high—one had the summoning ability inherent to the legendary item, while the other was a supernatural ability possessed by the Shadow (Occupation/Class). The attacks from the two summoned beings clearly slowed the Bear Spirit’s advances, buying Soren precious time.
He finally escaped the negative effects caused by the sonic attack.
Although he was seriously injured, Soren’s fighting spirit was burning strong. He had landed ten or so hits on the Bear Spirit previously. With the additional effects of Shadow Assassination’s shadow erosion, he had dealt around one to two hundred points of damage to the enemy. In other words, the Bear Spirit’s injuries wouldn’t be much better than Soren’s; the intelligence of spirit-like beings isn’t very high, and its use of powerful abilities indicated it felt threatened.
Soren didn’t dare to clash head-on with it, but that didn’t mean he had no other options.
He watched as the curved blade in his hand disappeared, replaced by a beautifully crafted elven war bow in his palm. He drew an arrow from his quiver and, immediately nocking it, aimed directly at the Bear Spirit’s head. With Soren’s agility, as long as he fully opened the distance, the opponent couldn’t keep up, unless it could unleash that roar attack again.
——”Turn Stone to Mud!”
Just as Soren shot the arrow at the Bear Spirit, Vivian’s petite figure appeared in midair. She raised her pale little hand and pointed towards the direction the Bear Spirit was advancing, turning the hard, solid ground into muck, causing the Bear Spirit’s massive body to sink directly into it, struggling for quite a while to climb out. This fifth-circle spell had numerous uses. How it applied depended entirely on the user’s thinking, as Soren had once had the wizard use this spell to set up a super large trap.
Swish, swish, swish!
Soren rapidly fired five or six arrows. Then he pulled out the curved blade; without special arrows, ordinary steel arrowheads would deal minimal damage to the Bear Spirit. To kite, he needed to have arrows capable of bypassing its defenses, at least explosive arrows, ice arrows, poison arrows, etc. Carrying about twenty of those was needed to effectively kite down powerful enemies. Normal arrows could only deal two to three points of damage due to the +2 armor penetration property of the elven war bow; killing the Bear Spirit was quite difficult, and they could only be used to chip away at its health.
——”Missile Storm!”
——”Acid Arrow*2!”
——”Fire Arrow*3!”
After using Turn Stone to Mud to temporarily trap the Bear Spirit, Vivian began casting spells in succession, showing that the little girl’s combat experience has grown significantly since before. She actually predicted that the Bear Spirit, as a divine being, would be hard to control with ordinary spells, simply judging from its appearance that it must possess a considerable level of saving throw abilities. Thus, Vivian chose a spell that wasn’t a controlling spell but could still act as a control effect: Turn Stone to Mud. Many wizard spells need not be strictly control spells to limit enemy movement.
A torrent of spell attacks descended.
Some were mitigated by the Bear Spirit’s spell resistance, but another portion still severely injured its body, particularly the damage from Acid Arrow and Fire Arrow was immensely significant!
At this moment, Soren’s figure darted forward.
The Shadow tore and bit around the Bear Spirit. Though it was a Shadow Life with almost no weight, the Earth Elemental, despite being nearly shattered from a single slap, still held onto about thirty percent of its combat power.
“d*e!”
Soren swung his blade down on the Bear Spirit’s head, which was already in a dying state after being bombarded by Vivian’s spells, and finally ended it with a beheading attack!
A bear-like head dropped to the ground.
Yet, not a drop of bl**d flowed out, as the Bear Spirit’s corpse before Soren quickly started to dissipate, like a burst of fireworks, transforming into glittering specks of light.
This was the power of the elements!
A pure elemental energy, transformed into a semi-energy form.
As the swirling energy faded, a portion coalesced into a gem-like substance, a crystal formed from highly condensed elemental energy, which was an extremely rare item. Only legendary-level beings would leave such behind, and elements from elemental planes could also yield a few. This was an important material needed by many spellcasters.
A series of data appeared:
“Initiate Beheading Attack!”
“Beheading successful! … You dealt 49 points of slashing damage to the target! … Target dead! …”
“You gained 7500 points of Killing Experience.”
“Target is a divine being!”
“Automatically extracting divine energy from the target’s body! …”
“You gained 2 points of Divinity Value.”
A surge of divine power poured in, gradually merging into Soren’s body. He originally had 9 points of Divinity Value; now it had accumulated to 11 points. Perhaps because the Bear Spirit itself wasn’t particularly wise, Soren didn’t feel any strong will from this divine energy. Instead, it resembled a form of chaotic and vague pan-consciousness, as if many people’s prayers had gathered together, ultimately forming a simple-minded consciousness collective.
This consciousness was quite weak.
It hardly possessed any self-concept, especially when compared to the will of the Demon God of Fear, which could be ignored!
Soren unhesitatingly devoured it.
Then, he saw a divine glow appear in his eyes, followed by a series of prompts:
“Fuse Divinity Value!”
“Divinity fusion successful! … You fused 2 points of divinity! … Current total divinity value is 11 points! …”
“You have automatically acquired the talent [Weakened Divinity].”
………………
“Weakened Divinity [Talent Ability]: You possess a very weak divine power within you. Although this divine power doesn’t mean much to many powerful beings, it allows you to gradually step into the realm of Transcendence. Due to your inherent abilities, your transformation of divinity leans towards the lower planes, so the effects of the Weakened Divinity you possess are similar to that of other high-level demons born with divine power. This divine power will progressively strengthen as your divinity value increases!” [All Attributes +1]
