Chapter 48: Defending While Attacking
Memory Metal.
This advanced alchemical craft from the Arcane Empire can gradually restore its original form as long as it is not completely destroyed.
This alchemical process is used only on high-level construct golems in the Arcane Empire. Memory metal grants these golems the ability to self-repair, providing a strong sustaining effect in battle. For instance, Soren saw that a scar had been slashed into the leg of the high-level construct golem, but it quickly healed back to its original state. Memory metal has a significant connection to the weapons of the Gisz from the Astral Realm, and many wizard organizations are secretly researching this metal to strengthen golem puppets.
Unfortunately, progress has not been substantial so far!
“Concentrate fire on one spot!”
Soren twisted his body to evade the high-level construct golem’s giant sword, then struck down at its crucial leg joint. The golem puppet possesses immense strength; only the dwarf heavy armored warrior could withstand it; anyone else would either d*e or be severely injured if they went toe-to-toe. Fortunately, the high-level construct golem’s energy source had diminished because it had been buried underground for too long; otherwise, Soren would have no idea what terrible attacks it might still have. This level of construct puppet golem is somewhat akin to a simplified version of a transformer.
Clang! Clang!
A series of metallic clashing sounds echoed. The alloy steel craft from the era of the Arcane Empire is powerful, and the steel armor of the high-level construct golem made Soren feel like he was trying to dismantle a tank with cold weapons. The strength of this alloy steel nearly reached aerospace engineering standards, leaving Soren with a frustrating sense of inadequacy in dealing with its tough exterior.
Golems have a high resistance to spells and ignore most negative statuses; the only way to deal with them is through brute force.
“I didn’t expect to encounter a situation that was jokingly referred to as ‘barehanded dismantling of Gundam’ so soon!”
Soren slid sideways three meters, then transitioned from holding his kn*fe in one hand to gripping it with both hands, initiating the sword intent [Horizontal Slash] at the high-level construct golem’s knee. Perhaps their series of attacks started to have an effect; the restoration ability of the memory metal was damaged by the continuous assaults. The high-level construct golem swayed slightly, and its movements became slow and awkward.
Its leg structure was compromised!
“Good opportunity!”
Soren’s expression brightened, and he said in a deep voice, “Attack its other leg to destroy its mobility.”
—”Gale Slash!”
With the enemy’s movement speed impaired, the previously restrained Eastern Wanderer suddenly became aggressive. Among all, he was the only one inclined towards a warrior profession without wearing heavy armor. Now that the enemy’s movement was hindered, it allowed him to attack freely. The Eastern Wanderer struck with his left hand like a gale, using a technique reminiscent of the ‘drawing sword technique’, slashing three times in an instant, all hitting the same spot and clearly creating a visible crack in the joint of the high-level construct golem’s other leg.
“Is he from the Gale Wanderer faction?”
Soren glanced over and thought to himself, “So, he might be a wanderer who has advanced from the Eastern Ranger?”
The Eastern Kingdom has many special advanced professions.
Soren’s most vivid memory is of the [Master of Fist] from the Eastern World, where many professionists specialize in a particular skill, believing that such a skill can ultimately resonate with ‘Heaven’s Way’, ‘Nature’, or the ‘World’.
Boom!
The heavy giant sword was slammed down by the high-level construct golem. The dwarf heavy armored warrior could no longer endure the impact and began to use his smaller stature to evade the attacks.
“Let me handle it!”
Soren jumped out of the melee and sheathed the Curved Blade “Ice d*ath,” instead taking out a small dagger radiating a faint golden sheen. He called out to the desert warrior in the fray, “Draw its attention. I’ll cut off its leg.”
The Curved Blade “Ice d*ath” is indeed legendary equipment, but its cutting ability cannot match that of the dagger in Soren’s hand.
Because this dagger is forged with a large amount of refined gold.
Among all special metals, the hardness and cutting ability of refined gold are the most impressive! A true refined gold weapon can even be used to cut through diamonds; this dagger is far more effective than many legendary pieces when cutting metal!
—”Sword Intent [Spiral Dance]!”
Accompanied by a burst of sparks. Soren bent forward and dashed to the side of the high-level construct golem, while the dagger in his hand sliced through a cold light, directly cutting into the breached steel armor.
Crack!
A distinct sound of fracture rang out.
As Soren’s figure surged forward, dodging the swinging shield, the high-level construct golem behind him suddenly began to sway and then came crashing down with a rumble.
One of its construct legs was severed!
“The Wanderer really relies on gear to make a living! …Without suitable weapons, many techniques are useless! …”
Soren stowed away the refined gold dagger and then took out the Curved Blade “Ice d*ath” again. The dagger was too short and small, making it difficult to use; even with training in dagger techniques, Soren still preferred not to use such compact weapons.
Clang! Clang!
The high-level construct golem had turned into a live target after losing a leg; its crippled movement speed posed little threat to the others present.
However, another problem arose.
It seemed to have activated its defense mode, shielding itself with a heavy shield, instantly giving off the impression of facing a turtle shell.
Losing one leg caused it to forgo most of its attacks; the smart commands programmed into it from the Arcane Empire made it aware enough to switch to a defensive mode in an unfavorable state.
Everyone was momentarily stunned.
It was not that they couldn’t k*ll it, but rather, the enemy was clearly setting up a defensive counterattack. Unless they could trick it into a counterattack, there was a high likelihood of being caught within the sweeping range of its giant sword after attacking.
“d*mn it!”
Soren’s expression soured as he murmured, “This golem actually possesses the specialty of [Defending While Attacking]!”
Current era puppet golems do not have specialty abilities.
Only the high-level golems from the Arcane Empire can have some specific combat specialties programmed in by Grand Archmages. Encountering such a high-level golem is undoubtedly quite frustrating.
“What a tough nut to crack.”
The dwarf heavy armored warrior took a step back with his battle axe, panting slightly, “What do we do now? This damned thing is standing still in defense! Should we circumvent it?”
“No!” Soren shook his head, “It’s safer to eliminate it.”
Defending While Attacking.
A particularly nauseating defensive specialty!
It is tantamount to forgoing offense in favor of prioritizing defense while also launching a portion of defensive counterattacks. Other people might manage to break through this defensive capability, but when this specialty is mastered by a high-level puppet golem made entirely of steel, the situation becomes very troublesome.
“Cover me!”
Soren furrowed his brows in thought for a moment, then summoned the faintly golden dagger in his palm, saying seriously, “Help me draw its attention; I’ll look for an opportunity to destroy its energy core.”
Without energy.
No matter how powerful a construct golem is, it is just a pile of scrap metal. This dangerous task requires someone to protect him.
