Chapter 65: Rise of the Cannon Fodder 7
The balance of battle has completely tilted!
Victory essentially belongs to the Succubus Legion, and the next step is to eliminate all the enemies.
Soren realized that his initial judgment was somewhat flawed; in terms of large-scale combat, the group fighting capability of the Balroth Fire Demon is hardly weaker than that of the Six-armed Serpent Demon. Once its innate abilities are activated, those cannon fodder wouldn’t even be able to approach. With over 30 points of fire damage per second from the Balroth Fire Demon, there are hardly any enemies below high-level demons that can withstand it. The only drawback is its ineffectiveness against devils, as many of them are immune to fire damage.
That is a characteristic of the Hell of Bartok; many of its natives are not afraid of flames!
Seeing the enemy in disarray, Soren finally gave up on dealing with low-level demons and turned his attention to a more powerful enemy, specifically a severely injured Frenzied Combat Demon in front of him.
The fiery body drove the enemies away, making allies hesitant to approach.
Soren easily got the chance to face a Frenzied Combat Demon in a one-on-one duel. He was very cautious when confronting such a large demon, as its attributes still posed a crushing threat.
His weapon had transformed into a +1 Extraordinary Longsword.
The battlefield was filled with equipment, unfortunately, most of it was of poor quality. The demons’ crafting skills have been consistently poor for thousands of years. The ubiquitous +1 Extraordinary Weapons in the Hell of Bartok are somewhat rare in the Bottomless Abyss. Sometimes, equipment from the Demon Legion has to be purchased from the neutral evil Ghost Hags and Night Witches from the Hell of Bartok, and during a Blood War, the battlefield would be littered with corpses and equipment. The demons happily accepted the soul power of these enemies, casually recycling the discarded weapons and reselling them to the Demon Legion through the Night Witches and Ghost Hags, earning some shiny disaster coins (gold coins) in the process.
From the current perspective, the chance of demons winning the Abyssal Blood War is always higher!
This is an intellectual suppression.
………………
Soren moved quickly around the Frenzied Combat Demon. As an experienced Wanderer, he knew exactly how to deal with larger enemies.
Rumbling!
Sure enough, the Frenzied Combat Demon started to become impatient and attacked him first.
Clang!
Accompanied by a splash of blood, Soren skillfully dodged the attack by twisting his body. Then, he countered with a sword thrust into the demon’s chest, causing a nauseating mucus to splatter as the Frenzied Combat Demon let out a low growl of pain.
The entire battle felt like he was toying with the opponent; the Frenzied Combat Demon never landed a hit on Soren at all. If it weren’t for its exceptionally strong vitality and its attributes being based on the Coward Demon template, it might have been taken down by Soren in one hit. By the time Soren exhausted the Frenzied Combat Demon, the surrounding battles were nearly over. A Succubus officer observed him with an intrigued gaze, her eyes sparkling with a hint of lust.
From the demons’ perspective, Soren’s advanced form was still quite appealing!
“Clap! Clap!”
Resounding applause echoed as a Succubus officer in metallic tight armor and black iron-crafted tall boots approached Soren. Her gaze seemed to tease him, and she smiled, saying, “Well done!”
“From now on, you are the captain of the 16th Brigade of the Succubus Legion! When you return, someone will assign you subordinates!”
………………
The battle has concluded.
The Succubus Legion returned triumphantly. This time, they eliminated a contingent of the old rival, the King of Werewolves, Yenogu, which made all the demons very happy. Soon, rewards were distributed. The Night Witches and Ghost Hags arrived at the Iron Fortress, bringing fine wine, food, and slaves, preparing to capitalize on the opportunity to earn some money. These neutral evil beings always manage to find opportunities to make a profit or to exchange for things that make them stronger.
Of course.
Trading with demons carries risks; devils are very trustworthy, but demons are not concerned about such matters!
As a result, the goods from the Night Witches and Ghost Hags were quite expensive.
Soren was promoted again!
Upon returning to the Iron Fortress of the Succubus Legion, he suddenly found himself in command of over a thousand demons, most of whom were low-level Coward Demons, with only a single Frenzied Combat Demon serving as his lieutenant.
Unfortunately.
The chaotic nature of the demons made them look down on him; the lieutenant Frenzied Combat Demon seemed to underestimate Soren’s capabilities, displaying an expression that suggested it wanted to eliminate Soren and take over.
It was somewhat frustrating.
On a positive note, the Succubi, who were clearly leaning towards the lawful side, did not seem particularly hostile towards him; in fact, a Succubus officer even made a teasing invitation to him.
Of course, this came with the hostile glances of other demons!
Before Soren could familiarize himself with his chaotic subordinates, he soon received new orders the very next day; a Blood War was likely about to erupt.
The Night Witches and Ghost Hags silently left the Iron Fortress the next day, always managing to avoid the repercussions of the Abyssal Blood War.
Soren needed to command his subordinates to strengthen defensive measures. Hundreds of years ago, demons had gradually been losing in Blood Wars, with the original battleground being on the first layer of the Hell of Bartok, then retreating to the Bottomless Abyss and the interstice between the realms of the Hell of Bartok. Now, the primary battleground for the Blood War was in the first layer of the Bottomless Abyss, the Ten Thousand Abyss Plains. If it weren’t for the mighty Demon Lord, the Wind Demon King Pazuzu, Soren might have doubted whether the devil legion could reach the third layer of the Bottomless Abyss directly.
The infighting among the demon lords was no match for the Lord of Hell, Asmothiel!
This terrifying entity was still gradually accumulating power, rallying a large number of Evil Spirits, and ready to counterattack into the deepest parts of the Bottomless Abyss.
As a newly promoted demon, Soren still couldn’t escape the fate of being cannon fodder.
However, if he could safely survive this wave of the Abyssal Blood War, perhaps he could break free from his fate as cannon fodder!
Of course.
The premise is that this time the demons could win against the devils, and he had no certainty of that. After all, war is not a one-person affair, and his personal abilities in the Blood War were quite insignificant!
However, under normal circumstances, as long as the Demon Legion does not engage in infighting and relies on their overwhelming numbers, they can always hold the devils to a stalemate.
Two days quickly passed.
Soren suddenly heard the alarm of battle at night, and he nearly jumped out of bed, preparing for combat. When he stepped onto the city walls, Soren couldn’t help but curse out loud.
“Dammit!”
The dark figures in front of him weren’t the Devil Legion; instead, they were countless Ghouls and Werewolves.
The demons’ retaliation!
The army of the King of Werewolves, Yenogu, chose this critical moment to take revenge on the Succubus Legion, plotting a night raid to avenge the destruction of their army.
At that moment, Soren finally understood why the demons always lost!
