Chapter 72: Demon Officer! Second Update
A flame streaked through the air.
Soren swung the Flame Whip at a wounded Furo Demon in front of him. The opponent nimbly dodged the attack but still got a glancing blow from the whip, instantly charring a large area of skin, followed by a piercing shriek. Although the Flame Whip was only considered a +1 magical weapon, its practical effectiveness in real combat could rival that of legendary weapons. As long as the target was not completely immune to fire damage or had incredible resistances, it would be easy to wear them down little by little.
Soren’s advantage lay in his attack range.
He did not seek to take down enemies with a single strike because the battlefield was too chaotic.
His main goal was to occasionally land a hit on the enemy while constantly being wary of what was behind him—not just potential enemies, but also frenzied allies.
There was no way around it.
This was the nature of demons; sometimes, in their frenzy, they would attack anything in sight.
The injuries on the Furo Demon worsened, and when Soren struck its forehead, the demon let out a final scream before dying.
A line of data appeared before him:
“Killed a mid-level Furo Demon!…”
“Extracting target’s demon bloodline!…”
“You gained 21 points of Demon Power!… Current physical body cannot absorb soul energy!… Soul energy converted!… Feedback to the body: 950 points of killing experience!…”
“Ability increased!… Biological level upgraded to level 14!…”
“Demon bloodline activated!…”
“Your body undergoes advanced mutation!… [Fire Demon] form gains ability enhancement!…”
“[Dominate Demon] ability is enhanced!…”
“[Fireball Spell] casting level increased!…”
“[Burning Hand] casting level increased!…”
……
It must be said that leveling up in the Bottomless Abyss was incredibly fast, especially on the battlefield of the Blood War. Any demon pulled out of here could serve as a minor boss, yet here they were mere cannon fodder. The Blood War was the easiest place to cultivate legends, but it was also the most lethal place.
In the battlefield of the Abyssal Blood War, while leveling up quickly, death came just as swiftly. Every day, a large number of creatures joined the bloodshed, but few managed to escape alive!
Across the entire multiverse, only the most insane mercenaries would choose to take part in the Blood War.
Soren noticed other demons advancing around him; for instance, a Frenzied Combat Demon, after successfully killing an injured Frenzied Combat Demon, immediately reached the limit of its demon bloodline. In a violent transformation, it became a new Frenzied Combat Demon. Unfortunately, it soon died under a Demon Spider simply because it blocked the creature’s path. The mutation speed of ordinary demons paled in comparison to Soren’s, perhaps due to their inefficiency in assimilating the demon bloodline.
A Coward Demon might need to kill a large number of enemies to gain a promotion, while Soren only needed about half that number!
This was the power at the soul level.
It could be that the power of slaughter continued to act upon Soren, or perhaps it was due to the essence of the deific soul—what it truly was remained unclear. But Soren’s advancement speed was indeed much faster than that of ordinary demons.
In the Bottomless Abyss.
Demons that advanced quickly represented sufficiently pure souls; it seemed that soul power was more easily transformed here—the purer the soul, the easier it was to turn into a powerful demon or devil.
Sometimes, demon lords and archdevils would directly shape pure souls into high-level demons and devils.
However.
If the soul was of poor quality, directly infusing power would immediately destroy them!
……
Soren cautiously avoided the figure of a high-level demon.
With his current strength, dealing with a high-level demon remained a challenge, and his chances of winning were probably less than fifty percent. He disliked taking risks on uncertain matters.
Abyssal Werewolves and Abyssal Ghouls were also not within his consideration—they both bore some demonic power, but not nearly as much as true demons. Soren had already observed a clear pattern: if he killed demons, he would receive a higher amount of demon power, but if he killed other creatures within the Bottomless Abyss, the killing experience feedback to his body would be greater.
Now.
He had received feedback of around ten to twenty thousand killing experience!
Although each demon provided only a few hundred to a thousand points, the sheer number of enemies made a difference. It was just like how Soren had just consecutively taken down five or six demons.
The enemy was in disarray!
Soren hurried to chase down the fleeing enemies, but he couldn’t move too far ahead, as that could lead to unexpected ambushes and encirclement. He only picked off stragglers at the side of the battlefield.
The accumulation of the demon bloodline had reached a level where Soren felt a breakthrough was imminent. If successful, he might advance to the elite form of [Fire Demon].
Because his biological level was about to reach 15!
As for advanced boss-like forms, he would likely need to suppress his mutational form and advance into a legendary creature as a [Fire Demon].
That option was not cost-effective!
While the [Fire Demon] leaders had abilities similar to those of legendary [Flame Demons], there was a difference in form and innate talents.
Advancing to a [Flame Demon] meant acquiring a new form.
Whereas keeping the [Fire Demon] form until reaching the boss level would mean enhancing his existing capabilities. Which advantage was more significant was hard to say; Soren’s goal was not just to become a boss-level demon but to establish himself as a demon lord in the Bottomless Abyss.
In that case, higher status was naturally better!
……
In the end, the enemy managed to escape.
The Succubus Legion did not pursue with full force, as their own casualties were significant, and they could not replenish so many demons in less than ten days or a half month.
The Minotaur, consumed by bloodlust, collided with the Succubus Legion.
Both sides suffered some losses, but the damage did not escalate. Under the furious roar of the Minotaur chief, many bloodthirsty Minotaurs retreated without saying a word.
The relationship between the Minotaur King—Baphomet—and the Succubus Queen—Mikanxute—was not very good; it was merely a matter of mutual use and cooperation.
Moreover, the relationship between the Minotaur King and the ancient Obsidian Demon, Cang Ye, was murky, and this mysterious ancient creature made the Succubus Queen wary!
King of Werewolves—Yenogu, Succubus Queen—Mikanxute, and Minotaur King—Baphomet.
Among these three demon lords, the Succubus Queen was the strongest in power, but her army was insufficient. Succubi, being mid-tier demons, were important resources in the Bottomless Abyss. The Succubus Queen’s forces mainly relied on recruiting other demons. King of Werewolves—Yenogu was not particularly strong, but he had an ancient Obsidian Demon corpse behind him; it was uncertain what he gained from it. Furthermore, having conquered the King of Ghouls, he had the largest army in terms of numbers.
After all, producing undead was much easier!
With Werewolves, Ghouls, and a demon army, the Minotaur King—Yenogu’s forces were the most oppressive.
Finally, there was the Minotaur King—Baphomet; his Minotaurs had decent combat能力, but Minotaurs were never a high-yield race, and for most years, he was beaten down by the King of Werewolves—Yenogu!
Today, however, he had struck back hard.
Such was the power distribution in the surrounding area; it was unsure whether it was coincidence or if other demon lords found it amusing, leading them to clash and cause endless warfare.
As for other demon lords, their forces participating in the Blood War were stationed elsewhere.
……
“You did well!”
The Succubus officer reappeared before Soren, gazing at his bare chest, which bore mysterious demonic tattoos that seemed to carry an unusual charm. The Succubus Legion crossed their legs, licked their lips, and spoke in a seductive tone, “I appreciate you! From now on, you’re in charge of this military camp!…”
“If you’re interested, you can come to my tent tonight. I won’t mind offering you some delightful pleasures!…”
“Hahaha!…”
The Succubus officer giggled as she left, and Soren was promoted once again.
Nearby demons still eyed him with hostility, but this time it seemed diminished, simply because Soren had become even stronger.
