Abyss Domination – Chapter 74

**Chapter Seventy-Two: Quiet Afternoon**

Not long after Soren left. About a minute or two later, a portal opened in the living room, and then the slightly disheveled figure of the Enchant emerged from it. She first adjusted her long dress, tucked her flowing hair behind her ear, and then, with her fingertips brushing the necklace around her neck, she complained, “You little brat! How dare you actually use the Maze Spell!”

“I am your own mother, and you dare cast Maze on me.”

The Enchant seemed a bit unsettled; she glanced around the living room out of boredom, then reached out and opened another portal, directly stepping into it.

“I’ll teach you a lesson once I unravel the secret of the Fate Cards…”

In the room.

The Merchant Caravan Mistress paused her steps, clearly aware that the Enchant had cracked her maze spell. She sighed lightly and then lightly tapped her finger against the wall. It seemed she activated some sort of mechanism, and the bricks in the wall split apart, revealing many intricate alchemical components. A staircase twisted downwards, with light spells illuminating the sides.

Following the winding staircase down, one could soon see a very large laboratory, seemingly larger than the house itself. On the side were rows of bookshelves, five or six meters tall and about ten meters wide, each filled with hundreds of books. Next to it was a small ladder, seemingly intended for someone, after all, Wizards didn’t require such things; a simple Mage Hand could retrieve any book they desired. “Vivian is here; to avoid disturbing me, I’ve cast a Soundproofing Spell.”

Gloria turned and glanced at Soren, reached out to press against the wall, and then an invisible energy shield retracted. She gently pushed open the door and walked inside. Soren curiously looked around; in addition to the numerous books, there were many alchemical devices and all kinds of bottles and jars, containing various powdered materials that he couldn’t recognize. The only thing familiar to him was the distillation and purification equipment, which he had often used as a Thief, mainly to purify the toxins in potions.

Vivian’s small figure sat at a desk.

Books were piled up beneath her feet, almost as tall as she was. The little girl held a quill in her hand, drawing something on white paper, with a large wastebasket underneath already filled with tightly crumpled papers. The little girl was entirely focused, so much that she didn’t notice the footsteps of the two, rapidly flipping through books while occasionally jotting down notes. It seemed she found some things difficult to understand and unconsciously bit down on the quill; realizing this, she hurriedly ‘puh puh puh’ spat it out. “Vivian.”

A rare hint of a smile appeared on Gloria’s face as she raised her hand lightly, slowly saying, “Soren is back. Take the day off; if you have any questions, think about them tomorrow.”

“Brother!?” The little girl turned her head, her expression brimming with joy, and leapt onto Soren’s body.

Soren, who had maintained a blank expression up to that point, also revealed a smile. He gently stroked the little girl’s long hair, picked her up, and gave her a light kiss on the forehead. Perhaps due to the time spent well, Soren felt the little girl had gained some weight, making her feel less light and airy in his arms. This made him cast a grateful glance at the Merchant Caravan Mistress. It was indeed tough for an 8-year-old girl to wander around with him; if it weren’t for his knowledge of future events, having Vivian study with her was also quite good.

Unfortunately, even in the future, legends may only barely be able to protect themselves.

Vivian was wearing a beautiful princess dress, her smooth long hair tied up with a pink ribbon, and there was a delicate brooch pinned to her chest that seemed like more than just an ordinary accessory.

Studying spells could sometimes be dangerous; one must always prepare emergency protective gear.

Vivian still wore the deerskin boots Soren bought for her, and after giving his face a kiss, she giggled and hung around his neck, looking like a cute koala.

“Go ahead.”

Gloria smiled faintly and said softly, “She seems to have a lot she wants to say to you; the yard behind is very quiet, and no one will disturb you.”

The little girl jumped off Soren and then took his hand, leading him outside, talking as she went, “Brother, where have you been the past few days? I’ve been so worried about you.”

Soren let the little girl lead him to the backyard.

It was a very spacious yard, surrounded by beautiful maple trees, with benches and a swing under the shade; the latter seemed to have been recently installed. The walls were covered in climbing ivy, and there was a circle of flower beds in the corner, filled with pretty violets, while leaves floated down in the wind, creating a contemplative autumn scene.

The little girl sat on the swing, and Soren unconsciously started to push it.

“Hee hee!”

Vivian let out a cheerful laugh, then scooted a bit inwards and pointed with her little finger to the empty space beside her, indicating for Soren to sit.

The two sat on the swing for a while, chatting. After a bit, the little girl pulled Soren over to a bench, first making him sit well, then she nestled in his embrace, resting her little head on Soren’s knee, whispering, “Brother, I’ve learned a lot of spells.”

“But some spells are very difficult.”

“I used to think that memorizing the incantation was enough for spells. But I didn’t expect there to be so much more to learn. Sister Gloria taught me spell knowledge in the morning, geography at noon, and besides studying alchemy in the afternoon, I also had to learn a lot about religion. At first, I would fall asleep while reading, but later I got used to it. Some things are actually quite interesting; Sister Gloria said if I learn them, I can become very powerful, and Vivian wants to become powerful too.”

“Sister Gloria is really nice; she tells me stories before bedtime, but sometimes the stories are so complicated that I barely understand. Recently, she’s been telling me the story of a princess and a dragon, and the noble etiquette in it is really troublesome. Sometimes I would fall asleep while listening, and the princess still hasn’t been captured by the dragon…”

“Sometimes she teaches me poetry; oh, and she bought me a seven-stringed zither. The tunes are really difficult to learn. Sister Gloria plays it so beautifully, but I sound terrible.”

The little girl seemed a bit dejected and then cuddled closer into Soren’s embrace, continuing to chatter, “I really don’t get it.”

“So a wizard has to learn so many things! I always thought a wizard just needed to recite the incantation and point forward to cast spells like biu~biu~biu!”

“Recently Sister Gloria has been teaching me how to quickly memorize spell models; honestly, I don’t even know what a spell model is, but those little light point patterns are easier to remember.”

“Indeed, having pictures makes it easier! Those characters look so troublesome!”

Vivian lay on Soren’s knee, continuing to ramble. At first, she spoke about what she had learned, such as astronomy, geography, astrology, religion, and so on, causing Soren to frown slightly. Then she went on about all sorts of terms that even he didn’t fully understand. Heaven knows how much the Merchant Caravan Mistress had taught her in this time; some wizard-specific jargon Soren didn’t quite grasp either. However, Vivian seemed to have learned the Read Spell, allowing her to learn much faster than the average person. He didn’t interrupt with questions, instead gently stroking Vivian’s back, softly patting her.

The little girl comfortably closed her eyes; her voice became softer, as if dozing off while mumbling about recent happenings, what she had eaten, and what new things she had seen. Eventually, her breathing gradually evened out, her murmurs turning into unconscious murmurs, and she truly fell asleep, sleeping soundly, with a glimmer of drool sliding from the corner of her mouth onto Soren’s knee.

“Silly girl.”

Soren gently patted her back, draping his coat over the little girl; autumn was already quite strong, and though the afternoon sun was warm, a slight chill accompanied the breeze.

If he didn’t initiate the conversation, Vivian rarely asked him what he was doing; she simply liked to talk about her little affairs.

Time quietly passed like this.

Soren seemed to feel a bit drowsy, resting his palm on the little girl’s back, slowly closing his eyes.

The autumn sun was lovely.

Lying on the bench, basking in the sun was warm. Soren kept his eyes closed and pretended to nap, while the little girl occasionally would unconsciously snuggle closer to him, half-asleep while drooling on his clothes. On the second floor, by the window, a graceful figure lay in a big chair, flipping through a book out of boredom and occasionally glancing below. Perhaps unconsciously affected by them, she also gently closed her eyes.

Below was a tranquil and serene little world, and at that moment, it should not be disturbed by outsiders.
