Fire.
Everywhere there was fire, fierce flames illuminating the entire night sky. In the distance, the panicked and terrified screams of others could be heard, mixed with eerie and terrifying manic laughter.
Blood.
Everywhere there was blood, the rich smell of blood enveloping the town. The sky seemed stained red, and the moon had taken on a strange dark red hue.
“Will!…”
“Will!… Thank heavens!… You’re not dead!… Get up quickly!…”
A burly man with a full beard appeared before him, dressed in a crude chainmail, bloodstains on his chest, and three claw marks on his thick arms. At that moment, he was holding a war hammer in one hand and quickly threw a longsword to Will, shouting, “Get up and fight! The demons have broken into the town!”
The young man slowly got up.
He shook his head, seemingly trying to make sense of everything before him, but soon memories began to flood back rapidly.
The sky this evening was a bit strange, with a troublingly intense red. It was still winter; such bright red sunset clouds should not appear, not to mention the moon being tainted with a hint of dark red.
The demons had arrived.
No one knew where they had come from; it was as if they had descended from the sky, suddenly appearing beside the town, and then they began to attack wildly.
Battle.
The town’s defense team was being defeated step by step, the militia scattered easily by the demons. He had encountered a lone Frenzied Combat Demon; although he managed to kill it with his strength, the final impact made him lose consciousness.
Fortunately, he was not unconscious for long.
“Captain!!!”
A young boy, slightly immature, ran over, his expression one of extreme fear. He spoke in a disjointed manner, “They’re dead!… Everyone is dead!… Hank… Ren… Shosta… all dead… all dead!…”
Ah!!!
In the distance came a woman’s sharp scream. Will recognized that voice; it belonged to the town mayor’s cook, a plump woman who was somewhat chatty but nice to everyone, occasionally sharing food from the kitchen with the children.
“I’m fine!…”
Will wobbled upright and grasped the longsword in his hand tightly. He brushed aside the boy’s hand that was trying to help him, his voice hoarse, “Where is everyone? Hurry to seek help from the priest at the temple!…”
“And also from Wizard Clyde.”
He was Will Jackson, the militia captain of East Lake Town, and a retired adventurer.
The bearded man’s face darkened as he looked around, speaking in a heavy tone, “Everyone has scattered!… Some cowards have run away!… The demons have broken into the residential area; we have to save them!…”
Residential Area.
Will’s eyes immediately filled with blood, and he gripped his longsword tightly and charged out. He roared, “Gather the others!… We absolutely cannot sit and wait!… Open the military supply depot!… Arm all the men!…”
“They must fight to protect their homes!”
Will’s figure surged forward, and a low-level Coward Demon appeared before him. As a former adventurer, he had encountered demons when fighting against some evil spellcasters, but he had never seen so many before. Moreover, there were even more terrifying demons among them. He felt a burning pain in his lungs; the initial impact had caused internal injuries, and only by relying on a physique beyond that of an ordinary person could he suppress his injuries to fight.
Splat!
Will slashed the Coward Demon before him, then saw a figure shivering behind a straw pile.
Ron. A half-grown boy, fourteen years old. Due to his short stature, he was often bullied and had always hoped to join the militia to become stronger.
Smack!
There was no time for Will to say anything; he directly picked up the boy with one hand, and then smacked him across the face. The poor little guy was paralyzed with fear.
Will picked up a sword that had fallen nearby and placed it in the boy’s hand, shouting, “Take the sword! Go to the defense station! Don’t stay here!”
“Tell the patrol team to hurry and come to assist!”
The boy, trembling, got up. Around them were scattered corpses, some were demons, but many were humans. The ground was littered with severed limbs and several mangled corpses that had been consumed; he suddenly vomited, bile spewing forth.
Will sighed.
After all, he was just an ordinary civilian, and facing everything in front of him, he nearly broke down easily. He had no time to concern himself with this kid and could only raise his sword and charge forward.
Many people were dead.
In just a short distance of a couple hundred meters, he saw many corpses of his comrades, both from the militia and the defense team.
Even!
He saw a broken corpse clad in full armor; it was Lord Dick of the town, a knight of noble standing, and one of the most powerful professionals in the town.
His body had been torn in half!
Will could not imagine how terrifyingly strong a creature must be to kill a knight in such a brutal manner.
Demons.
The figures of demons appeared ahead.
They charged wildly through the flames, and a fair-looking girl, terrified by the fire, ran out from some hiding place. Before Will could rush over to save her, several wandering demons charged forward and instantly tore this young beautiful life apart!
“No!”
Will’s vision blurred with rage; unprecedented anger surged through him as he charged forward, instantly slashing down the demons before him.
Bright radiance emerged.
Then came a series of explosions. Will gasped as he raised his head, his spirits lifting as he murmured, “Over there? The temple!!!”
East Lake Town is located in the southern region of the continent.
Here, there are temples serving the Agricultural Goddess, the River Goddess, and the Red Knight (Goddess of Strategy).
Will began to head towards the vicinity of the temple, but the nearby scattered demons were also attracted by the explosion sounds and started to converge towards that direction.
Corpses.
Everywhere were corpses.
Familiar faces had now turned into cold corpses, filling Will’s heart with sorrow and anger. Though he had moved here after ending his adventuring career, five years had made him accustomed to life here, viewing this peaceful town as his home.
—“Arcane Missile!”
—“Protection from Evil!”
—“Fireball!”
The brilliance of spells emerged, transforming the area around the three temples into a battlefield. The surviving elderly, weak, and women fled inside the temple, while outside were men wielding weapons. Several spellcasters were active on the battlefield, relying entirely on their power to block the demons’ attacks time and time again.
Quasai demons, Coward demons, Abyss Bloodthirsty demons, Deceitful demons, Frenzied Combat demons…
Some demons Will had seen before, others he had not, launched repeated attacks on the temple. They seemed somewhat wary of the power shrouding the temple; some mid-tier demons hesitated to attack and instead kept sending low-level demons to exhaust the enemy’s strength.
“Will!…”
A trembling girl hiding inside the temple suddenly stood up, urgently calling out to Will, “Be careful!…”
“Behind you…”
A feeling of great crisis suddenly surged in.
Without even thinking, Will rolled forward, followed by a violent explosion. His figure was directly sent flying through the air.
Flames spread!
A figure, engulfed in raging flames, emerged from the ruins ahead; it looked like a humanoid creature on fire. It threw a hand and a massive fireball came rushing forth.
Fire Demon!
One of the strongest mid-tier demons from the Bottomless Abyss, the basic form of the Balroth Fire Demon.
The appearance of the Fire Demon undoubtedly became the last straw that broke the weakest balance before him. With a single Fireball spell exploding among the crowd, the nearby warriors around the temple suffered heavy losses in an instant.
A Fire Demon with a Challenge Level above 8 was no longer something they could combat!
If his former adventurer companions were still here, Will might have had a chance to take down the Fire Demon before him since he had recently successfully advanced to the Third Tier as a warrior, but now hardly anyone could stop its advance. Although there were a few resident wizards in East Lake Town, most were only of Second Tier strength. Only one could cast spells of 4th tier or higher.
“Attendants!”
“Come to my side!”
A stirring war cry rang out, accompanied by the sound of galloping hooves. A cavalry unit appeared on the opposite street. Leading them was a fully armored human knight, dressed in medieval Gothic plate armor, surrounded by fully armed cavalrymen. Compared to the poorly equipped militia and defense team, these people could be considered a real army.
“My lord!”
“It’s Baron Bolek!”
“We’re saved!”
The pounding of hooves drowned out the excited roars of the demons, and the cavalry charged like a sharp knife directly into the enemy’s vitals.
The long spears lifted a Deceitful Demon into the air.
The first wave of the cavalry charge instantly caused heavy losses among the demons, but sadly, this was not an open plain. In the confined space of the town, even the capable lord’s guards only had one chance to charge. A Frenzied Combat Demon seized the opportunity, its weight nearly 1500 pounds, crashing down the rider’s horse and then seizing the fallen knight attendant. With just a twist of its hands, this Second Tier knight attendant was torn in half.
“Fire… Blood… Slaughter…”
Deep tones of abyssal language resonated, the Fire Demon turned its gaze toward these people, igniting the surrounding area with flames.
A sharp eagle’s cry suddenly pierced the air.
An eagle soared above the town; at this moment, all of East Lake Town had turned into a sea of fire, and the once-prosperous town was left with burning ruins and corpses scattered everywhere.
“Demons?!”
“Why are there so many demons appearing in the Material Plane?”
The figure of the eagle dove down, transforming into a tall elven druid upon landing. The druid bore the emblem of the Druid Order on his chest, and with a primal roar, a massive brown bear suddenly appeared beside him.
Animal Companion!
As a feral druid of the nature sect, he did not particularly like associating with humans, but in the current situation, he decided to help fight against the demons.
The sky turned blood red.
It felt suffocating, as if one could not breathe. Just as people thought they might be able to welcome victory, a rift suddenly opened in the sky, and a gigantic, hideous spider slowly crawled out.
In that instant!
Even the druid’s face changed dramatically, looking extremely grim, “Demon Spider?!!”
………………
Meanwhile.
In the laboratory of Modo City, Gloria, who was conducting research on floating rings, suddenly turned pale, followed by the mechanical voice of the Tower Spirit Experiment ET, “Unknown spatial disturbances detected in the alert area!”
“All spell traps have been triggered!”
A beam of teleportation light appeared.
Gloria’s figure suddenly appeared atop the lighthouse. As she infused magical energy into a peculiar metal spell device, a sharp alarm echoed throughout the entire sky of Modo City.
In an instant.
Countless people were awakened from their dreams, and angry shouts from officers were heard from the direction of the military camp and defense station. Teams of Modo City guards began to assemble, and in just a few minutes, thousands of troops had gathered.
In the distance, the sky was dark red.
About twelve kilometers outside Modo City, a strange blood-red cloud layer had enveloped the area without anyone noticing.
