Chapter Eighty-Eight: Invisibility Spell
Soren hardly slept through the night.
During this time, he was desperately trying to analyze the Invisibility Spell, aiming to completely construct its spell model in his mind. The Invisibility Spell is the most difficult second circle spell, and it has the greatest effect; it not only allows the caster to become invisible but can also be placed on others, enabling them to achieve invisibility as well. Once invisible, the target will be completely unseen to the naked eye, although sounds made and traces left will still exist, allowing one to estimate the general location of the target.
“Invisibility Spell [Second Circle Spell]: After using the Invisibility Spell, the target will disappear from view unless they are beings with the ability to see through invisibility or have been enhanced with a spell to detect invisibility. Attacking while invisible will cause the spell to fail; the Invisibility Spell merely confuses the eyes, it cannot erase sounds made or eliminate traces of movement. When under the effect of the Invisibility Spell, picking up a certain item will render that item invisible; dropping the item will make it reappear. Each point of spell strength lasts for 10 minutes and can be maintained.”
Soren is currently a Level 5 Wizard.
He possesses 5 points of spell strength from his profession level and 5 points from his intelligence. If he were to cast Invisibility Spell, it could last for 100 minutes, which is about an hour and a half. This is certainly not a short duration, and if used wisely, it can produce significant results; in case of danger, he can easily escape. Moreover, he is taking Vivian to Leaffall City this time, where they might encounter monsters; if too many monsters prove difficult to handle, he can cast Invisibility Spell on Vivian, allowing her to hide and avoid danger.
There are no monsters in the wilderness that can see through the Invisibility Spell. It essentially adds a very safe insurance.
Invisibility potions and invisibility scrolls are among the most commonly used items by Wanderers, especially when combined with stealth, theft, or backstabbing. Whether it’s stealing wealth or assassinating targets, they are extremely effective. Particularly in theft situations, they have a decisive advantage. Soren originally became wealthy and escaped his life in the slums by acquiring an invisibility potion, directly entering the ranks of adventurers striving for a better life.
Invisibility potions last for one hour and cost around 200 Gindlers.
Such potions are relatively rare, and when a Wanderer gets one, they usually use it on significant targets or sneak into the noble district to steal extensively at night. With a bit of luck, they can steal wealth worth thousands of Gindlers in an hour. However, one must be careful to avoid those not to be trifled with. The houses of great nobles often have many alarm devices, and most focus on stealing from the wealth of lesser nobles. Occasionally, they might even score valuable treasured artworks.
At that time, the most famous incident was a guy who stole an antique worth 50,000 Gindlers and was hunted down by the entire south for a long time.
Soren doesn’t mind stealing.
If necessary, he would undoubtedly have no qualms about pulling off an old job again. The Invisibility Spell is the most useful spell, and after studying it for so many days, he has completed roughly 60% of the spell progress. This is mainly because he has added his knowledge skill to 115 points, combined with his experience and intelligence boosts, significantly increasing his speed in learning spells compared to the past. If all goes well, he can complete the spell analysis of Invisibility Spell in two days at most.
By then, he would be able to memorize two Invisibility Spells. With over three hours of invisibility time each day, it would allow him to do many things.
Low-level wizards have very few spell slots.
Due to the limitations of the Magic Network, most wizards have roughly the same spell slots; intelligence only affects the strength of the spells. The highest level of spells they can cast, as well as the speed and number of spells they can memorize, are determined. It was not until the collapse of the Magic Network that talented wizards were truly liberated, allowing for significant enhancements to their spell abilities and numbers. Under the current situation, every spell cast will have half of its power absorbed by the Magic Network, which is then transformed into the power of the Goddess of Magic, most of which is used to maintain the functioning of the Magic Network, with a small portion used to enhance her divine power.
Soren currently has 6 level 0 spell slots, 4 level 1 spell slots (Wizard’s Ring +1), 2 level 2 spell slots, and 1 level 3 spell slot.
This means he can memorize a total of 13 spells at once; the number of level 0 cantrips is equal to the wizard level plus 1, meaning a level 10 wizard has 11 level 0 spell slots. The calculations for the other spell slots are more complicated, and it’s unclear how the Goddess of Magic set up the Magic Network system. Soren can only roughly estimate his highest spell slots. Many spells used by wizards require equipment to enhance, and many high-level extraordinary items can provide additional spells.
As long as the Magic Network exists, casting spells is dictated by the Goddess of Magic; if she relaxes the permissions of the Magic Network, the spells cast by wizards will increase, and if she tightens the permissions, their spells will decrease. Therefore, in the years of turmoil following its initiation, the Goddess of Magic faced a lot of attacks, including many legendary wizards actively targeting her, aiming to destroy the Magic Network system and lift the restrictions on their abilities. However, the cost was heavy, and many wizards lost their ability to cast spells.
“Phew!”
Soren rubbed his forehead, washed his face with clear water, and then drew his curved blade to practice the White Crow Technique.
As his profession level rises, his energy also becomes more vigorous; not sleeping for several consecutive days is not much of a problem. The training progress of the White Crow Sword Technique is very slow; these combat skills require a lot of effort to hone. He currently has over 5,000 Killing Experience, and if he wanted, he could directly increase his Thief level or Wizard level. However, Soren also wants to see if he can trigger an Advanced Profession, as advancing would provide a significant boost to his abilities.
The Stealth Assassin can increase stealth and investigation by 10 points, the Master Thief can increase lockpicking and traps by 10 points each, and the Bounty Hunter can increase search and gain a Tracking specialty, etc. Advanced Professions enhance the original profession level and generally emphasize a specific aspect of ability, but at the cost, the Killing Experience required for advancing to an Advanced Profession is higher. Simply advancing requires 5,000 points of Killing Experience, and the cost for further levels of the Advanced Profession generally increases exponentially.
Advanced Professions have basic skill requirements and also require certain special conditions.
Currently, the Advanced Profession that Soren can most easily reach is Stealth Assassin; he only needs 150 points of stealth skill to meet the advancement condition. However, he also wants to see if he can open up other Advanced Professions, such as the Shadow which requires evasion to understand the Evasion Specialty, or the Bounty Hunter who excels in tracking, etc. These Advanced Professions will all have powerful extension abilities upon entering the Legendary Domain. Among them, the most outstanding is the Bounty Hunter, who can mark targets with a mental marker after reaching Legendary status.
Then, when activating special skills, they can traverse the Shadow Plane, appearing directly behind their target out of thin air!
Their assassination ability is essentially on par with that of a Legendary Assassin.
If Soren were not a part-time wizard, there would be no doubt he would advance to Stealth Assassin. However, with the effect of the Invisibility Spell, the need to advance to Stealth Assassin has greatly diminished. With the Invisibility Spell and the future Greater Invisibility Spell, he can completely replace the additional capabilities of the Stealth Assassin during stealth. Therefore, Soren’s current thought is to further enhance his combat burst ability. Right now, the Assassin, Shadow, and Bounty Hunter are his top choices for advancement, as all three advanced professions possess powerful combat abilities.
“Assassins must learn alchemy and have the specialty of making poisons.”
Soren sheathed his curved blade and moved into the room, needing to buy some small bits and pieces. “The evasion requirement for the Shadow is very high; I probably still lack a lot in my evasion skill. The Bounty Hunter will eventually gain extremely powerful tracking ability, but the combat power it adds before entering the Legendary Domain isn’t good, and there are a lot of prerequisites.”
“Now I can only see which advancement condition I can meet first.”
Wizards are always busy.
Soren went to the Arcane shop to buy parchment, ink, quills, gemstone powder, and so on; these are specialized tools for wizards, not the kind ordinary people would use. He also casually bought food for the evening and then began copying scrolls based on the spells he memorized; this is the most important skill for a wizard and the greatest guarantee of combat power, with the only drawback being that it costs a lot of money.
In total, he spent over a hundred Gindlers.
After returning to his room, Soren started copying scrolls. He had memorized four Arcane Missile spells, allowing him to attempt copying four scrolls. Usually, the first attempts at copying scrolls will fail, but one can improve their foundational skills during the copying process. As the skill of copying scrolls improves, the success rate will increase, ultimately allowing attempts to copy higher-level spells. As a spellcaster, not having a few scrolls for protection is unacceptable.
Two hours passed quickly.
As expected, Soren failed; the first Arcane Missile scroll copy failed, costing him around twenty Gindlers worth of materials and earning him 2 points in the scroll copying skill. He wasn’t surprised by the failure, and after taking a short break, he continued copying until he successfully completed the third scroll.
Over a hundred Gindlers were exchanged for an Arcane Missile scroll, and his scroll copying skill increased by 12 points.
Failure only yielded 2 points of skill increase, but a single success earned him 6 points.
“It seems my concentration skill is still not high enough.” Soren stored away the successful spell scroll and tidied up his things in preparation to see Vivian. Copying first-circle spells can continuously raise the scroll copying skill up to 50 points; beyond that, he will need to copy higher-level spells, with nine-ring spell scrolls needing over 400 points in the scroll copying skill.
He sighed, looking at the wasted materials, muttering, “Spellcasting Professionists really are costly! And this is before starting my research into alchemy! It looks like once I learn Invisibility Spell, I’m going to have to pull off a big score.”
As a thief.
Stealing is a very normal thing; Soren looked at the wealth he had left and ultimately decided to hit the noble district for an old job before leaving.
