Chapter Six: Miss Ghost’s Unexpected Tenderness
Zhao Mingyue’s situation was extremely precarious, with thirty-one bloodthirsty madmen fixated on her. Regardless of their internal squabbles, fights for dominance, or attempts to protect their little band of five supporting characters, Zhao Mingyue was the common enemy.
Eliminating Zhao Mingyue would solve their external issue, and once she was out of the picture, they could battle it out however they liked without a care!
At least it would spare them the awkwardness of a scenario where the male protagonist gets wooed by the female protagonist before they could eliminate their rivals.
They’re crazies, not fools. They know feelings can’t be forced. Once the male lead develops a crush on the female lead, that’s when things get really messy. Even killing her wouldn’t help—it might even increase the difficulty of their pursuit!
So, they absolutely needed to nip this in the bud; the sooner Zhao Mingyue was out of the picture, the better!
And it wasn’t just Zhao Mingyue; any woman daring to approach the male protagonist would be met with the same fate at the hands of those overwatching madmen.
At this moment, anyone interacting with the male protagonist and the four supporting characters either liked him or was a player in this twisted game.
All had been transformed into beautiful girls, but they had no clue about each other’s identities or appearances.
In a nutshell, her target was the female protagonist—both a blessing and a curse.
The blessing? No competition from other participants. The curse? She had to take on all the other participants single-handedly.
At six twenty in the morning, her rabbit-eared phone began to vibrate lightly, playing a lovely piano melody that echoed throughout her bedroom. About half a minute later, Zhao Mingyue sleepily opened her eyes and swiped off the alarm.
Her eyelids felt like they weighed a ton, and even cracking them open just a tiny bit made the burning sensation unbearable, forcing her to shut them again.
She’d only fallen asleep around five o’clock and now had to get up before six-thirty. Drowsy, she tried to snooze for another ten minutes when a chilling presence jolted her upright from her blankets.
Stiffly turning her head, she spotted the figure in white dress standing by her bed. With messy black hair framing her face, the girl with dark eyes was staring at her intently.
“Get up.”
“G-get up?” Zhao Mingyue blinked. She never expected Bai Yu to personally wake her.
This evil ghost was a bit too ‘gentle,’ wasn’t she?
Is this a service now?
Awakened by an evil ghost first thing in the morning, Zhao Mingyue was completely out of sleep mode.
Bai Yu shot her a glance and ignored her. To be fair, the girl was stunning—incredibly pretty, no wonder she was the female lead.
Her short hair was neat yet cute, especially in the morning, and those sleepy eyes opening wide looked adorably dim-witted. Her face had a beauty that didn’t strike you instantly but grew more enchanting with every glance.
Especially those eyes. Bai Yu was certain if she fell into the hands of those madmen, they’d definetly seek to pluck them out as trophies.
Seeing Bai Yu still assessing her at the bedside, Zhao Mingyue quickly hopped out of bed and, in front of Bai Yu, stripped off her pajamas to change into her work uniform with “Tomorrow’s Convenience Store” printed on it.
The world-class beauty changing clothes in front of her, even though she was still wearing her underwear, made Bai Yu avert her gaze, a classic case of “no peeking, please.”
Once she donned her work outfit, Zhao Mingyue walked past Bai Yu, feeling braver than before, and attempted a conversation: “Do you need something to eat?”
Noting the look on Bai Yu’s face as if she were talking to a fool, Zhao Mingyue managed an awkward smile, “Alright, well, I won’t pull back the curtains then. I’m off to make breakfast since I actually have to go to work later.”
It was Saturday, her day off, but unfortunately, it was work nonetheless.
“Mm.” Nodding lightly, Bai Yu followed Zhao Mingyue but didn’t go to watch her wash up. Instead, she stood in front of the living room curtains.
By June, the sun was already out before six-thirty, filtering through the curtains, causing Bai Yu discomfort.
Zhao Mingyue rushed through washing up and making breakfast, which consisted of just two slices of bread and a glass of milk. When Bai Yu saw her reaching for hot dogs in the fridge, she hesitated before abandoning the idea.
This female lead was a bit poor, leading a hard life but remaining sunny and spirited—a classic heroine trope.
After breakfast, it was already six-forty-five. A quick tidy-up while she got ready, and just as her hand rested on the living room door handle, she recalled something and turned to Bai Yu.
“I’m heading to work now. Are you staying home waiting for me, or…”
Before she could finish, Bai Yu slipped into her shadow.
At the same moment, Bai Yu’s ethereal voice whispered in Zhao Mingyue’s ear: “Be careful lately. A couple of murderers have come to town, specifically targeting girls like you.”
“Ah…” Zhao Mingyue halted, glancing down to find her shadow absent—way too dim in that room to see anything, but she nodded vigorously: “Thanks for the heads up, I’ll be careful!”
A strange warmth spread in her heart. This was indeed ghost vs. ghost; the one upstairs peeped at her and wanted her dead, while this Bai sister was a genuinely good soul—er, good ghost!
If only she knew what had caused this kind-hearted sister’s demise; she must have some heavy grudges and obsessions after all. Maybe she was killed by one of those murderers.
Thinking back to the introduction of Miss Rabbit on her black phone, that girl Bai Sisi had been brutally murdered and dismembered. Perhaps Bai Yu’s overwhelming grudge stemmed from something similar.
Having already gone downstairs, Zhao Mingyue turned back, stuffing the rabbit phone into her backpack.
She had an idea: if she ever got the chance, she would capture those killers and give Bai Yu a proper burial to let her rest in peace.
If Bai Yu knew that was Zhao Mingyue’s train of thought, she’d surely give her a “you’ve got to be kidding me” look.
“Huh? Why am I still on the fourth floor?”
Rushing down from the fourth floor, Zhao Mingyue hadn’t paid attention to the floor sign. She thought she’d descended four stories, but a quick glance over her shoulder confirmed she was still on the fourth!
“This…”
Skeptical, she rushed back down to the first floor, only to turn around and find herself still on “4.”
After the ghostly experience the night before, she believed fully in the existence of ghosts. So now, when faced with this situation, her mind instinctively recalled something.
“Is this the infamous ghost wall?”
Gasping in disbelief, she decided to descend another floor and carefully set her backpack down. Just as she took another step down, she spotted her familiar little bear backpack.
“Wow, it really is a ghost wall…”
Frantically calling out Bai Yu’s name in her head.
If it was a ghost wall, her ghostly companion surely had a solution, right?
