Chapter 42: You Have to Learn to Take the Initiative in Your Pursuit
Bai Yu was quite surprised that the female ghost on the fifth floor had such a keen nose. She only threw a few punches at the black shadow and didn’t even exert much strength, yet the ghost sensed her and came chasing after her.
But it wasn’t a big deal; the real star tonight was still that guy, Lu Liangting.
She could confidently say that Lu Liangting’s whereabouts had long been figured out by that crazy bunch. There was no way they would just stand by and watch him d*e. The reason no one had made a move yet tonight was probably because someone had already set their sights on him and was preparing to strike first.
Considering the timing, the person waiting to strike Lu Liangting would be under quite a bit of pressure.
If she guessed correctly, that person was the shadow lurking behind Li Nan.
The signs were already there; it was clear that the black shadow clinging to Li Nan wasn’t something he had summoned himself.
Even a useless guy like Li Nan managed to get himself a ghostly hitchhiker, which meant the mastermind behind him had to possess something much stronger—more than likely something they brought back from a task location.
Now, the question arose: if everyone had just been reborn a few days ago like him, how in this short span of time could this person enter a task location fresh from rebirth without even having adjusted to their identity, smoothly bring out a ghost, and train Li Nan like a pet dog?
No way that bunch of lunatics could have such high efficiency!
The answer was clear: among all the participants in this game, a portion had to have entered early.
They entered early but were also bound—unable to strike at the protagonist or anyone around them during this “preparation time,” and couldn’t alter the world’s development until the game officially started.
Boldly speculating, the game officially began the day they were reborn.
This meant a mere few days had passed, and in such a short time, they were confident enough to go after Lu Liangting.
Tonight was bound to be pivotal.
Bai Yu was genuinely curious about how this group of crazies, who had been men in their previous lives, would cleverly pursue Lu Liangting now that they were women.
In any case, they definitely wouldn’t be that clever; it just wasn’t their strong suit.
After fending off the female ghost, Bai Yu vanished, leaving Lu Liangting wanting to say something but failing to find the words.
“Mingyue, let’s go back to the room.”
Zhao Mingyue was lost in thought. She knew Bai Yu was strong, but every time she saw her in action, she felt this odd sensation. How could someone with such slender arms and legs pack such a punch?
The female ghost on the fifth floor wasn’t weak either; it seemed like she had barely any chance to fight back.
Sigh, how many tasks would she need to complete to surpass Bai Yu’s strength?
The road ahead was long and arduous!
But the good news was that although Bai Yu was a ghost, she was different from your average ghost—she wasn’t some intangible presence. It was just like the earlier fight; there was no ghost that could throw punches like that!
Zhao Mingyue got a bit spaced out, and Bai Yu thought she was afraid and offered some comfort.
“Tonight, you’re fine. I’m here.”
“Uh… okay.” Zhao Mingyue instinctively thought about calling her ‘Sister Yu’ but decided against it.
She could always call her that when bathing tomorrow night.
“Bai Yu, what’s going on tonight? You seem… strange.”
“Nothing, it doesn’t concern us.”
Bai Yu suspected that Li Nan’s attempt on Zhao Mingyue’s life was secondary; the real worry was how Li Nan would deal with Lu Liangting, and when another character would jump into the fray.
In the hallway.
With Bai Yu gone, the female ghost on the fifth floor didn’t come back down.
With two powerful enemies out of the way, the only thought the black shadow had was to run.
And conveniently, it was right behind Lu Liangting. Once it made a move, Lu Liangting instantly reacted, seeing this guy charging at him again, and without a second thought, he threw a punch.
The two continued to fight, with the black shadow wanting to finish things quickly.
With the black shadow’s assistance, Lu Liangting was naturally no match for Li Nan. He had been on many tasks and had significantly improved physically, while Li Nan, with his parasite, also saw a boost in strength.
Pushed into the hallway, Lu Liangting had no intention of fleeing.
After all, Li Nan was here to stir trouble for Zhao Mingyue, who was a fragile young girl living alone. If he didn’t deal with Li Nan today, Zhao Mingyue’s situation would be even more perilous.
Unfortunately, he was still too weak. After a few rounds of struggle, the black shadow wrapped itself tightly around him.
Just as the black shadow opened its jaw wide to take a bite, a girl’s voice suddenly rang in his ears.
“Evil spirits, begone!”
A wooden figure flew out, perfectly smacking the black shadow on the head. The black shadow howled and vanished in an instant. Without its host, Li Nan rolled his eyes and crashed to the ground.
Lu Liangting lay on the floor, looking up at the girl’s delicate face.
The girl crouched beside him, dressed in loose sportswear, her black hair tied into two bun-like pigtails with red strings. Her lightly made-up face had no particular expression, giving off a slightly aloof vibe that paired well with her overall clean and refreshing demeanor—almost with a hint of Taoist charm.
“You okay?”
Seeing that Lu Liangting still had some strength left, she stood up and extended a hand to him.
Grabbing her hand, Lu Liangting sat up and took a breath, glancing over at the fallen Li Nan with a long exhale. “Thanks a lot.”
“No need. I just sensed the aura of a ghost, so I came to check it out.” The girl said, her cherry lips parting slightly.
Lu Liangting turned to look at her again, finally remembering something. “You’re… Chen’s sister?”
She was from the same school and had seen him plenty of times, but they had never really talked.
“Yep, you’re my sister’s student. You’re Lu Liangting, right? I know you.”
“Really need to thank you. By the way, could I ask your name?”
“Chen Yun.”

“Everyone, I think if you don’t change your mindset now, it will all be too late.” A figure stood atop the roof of a building behind an alley, wearing a rabbit mask.
As soon as her voice came out, the shadows in the alley—some standing, some sitting—turned their heads simultaneously to look at her.
“Don’t look at me like that; I’m here for you, or rather, to save some of you.”
“I bet you’re all curious about this task, right? Why you’re being turned into women and how a man is supposed to fall in love with you, and how exactly you’re supposed to pull that off.”
“Don’t rush to take action.” Noticing that some in the alley were starting to get up, the rabbit-masked figure maintained her calm tone. “Instead of standing here waiting to d*e, why not listen to my advice?”
“You need to shift your thinking, especially regarding your impulsive urge to k*ll—this world is special, and if you k*ll, you’ll d*e even worse.”
“Moreover, killing won’t bring you closer to Lu Liangting. Haven’t you heard the saying? Relationships are developed; once they spark, if managed well, they can roll down the hill like a snowball, unstoppable.”
“Oh, and haven’t you noticed? Aside from Lu Liangting, have you really not spotted a second target for the task?”
Behind the rabbit mask, her eyes narrowed—whether in a smile or some other signal, it was anyone’s guess.
