Chapter 298: Descent of the God
“Wow, I can’t believe I’m actually here all alone, so far from home.”
Standing outside the train station, Zhao Mingyue stared at the bustling street. Glancing at the unfamiliar city, she suddenly felt a bit lost, unsure of what to do next, especially with those eager taxi and motorcycle drivers crowding around asking where she wanted to go.
The city she found herself in was called Hejiang City, a whopping eight hundred kilometers away from Tianchang City.
Even the accent of the people around her sounded weird, and she was really not used to this feeling.
“Well, it’s not like I’m completely alone; at least I have this plush toy with me,” she mumbled to herself, patting the rabbit plush toy poking out of her pocket. She checked the time on her phone; it was already 8:30 PM.
She flagged down a taxi to take her to a hotel in the city center, one that was a little pricey but boasted a nicer environment—much cleaner and quieter than the sketchy inns near the train station.
Most importantly, it was less than three kilometers from the nearest Ghost Gate. She could rest at the hotel for a bit and then head out later to collect her believers, testing the waters of Hejiang City.
Because let’s be real, after traveling such a distance, who knows what this place would be like compared to Tianchang City?
Local powers, gatekeepers, ghosts, and evil gods were the order of the day.
Zhao Mingyue figured that a chaotic organization like the Ghost Domain couldn’t just be limited to Tianchang City. To put it plainly, the people of the Ghost Domain were just a bunch of lunatics, and there’s no shortage of lunatics around the world.
“I wonder how the store manager collected all this intel,” she thought, as she plopped down on the big bed in her hotel room. On the bedside table was a plate of exquisite pastries. With a cake fork dangling from her mouth, she tilted her head to check out the marked locations of the Ghost Gates on her map.
These locations had been written down by Li Tianan, and they not only covered Tianchang City but even marked the Ghost Gates in other provinces.
God knows why he went through the trouble of collecting these Ghost Gate spots.
At least it made things easier for her and Bai Yu; they wouldn’t have to waste time hunting for these places. Just figuring out where the Ghost Gates were would take ages!
“I get the feeling that the store manager is quite the mystery; it’s like he’s always holding back, never giving it his all.”
“That’s true. He’s quite the deep thinker.” Bai Yu emerged from Zhao Mingyue’s shadow.
“Totally. So, where do we start?” Zhao Mingyue placed her phone in front of Bai Yu. “This one’s the closest Ghost Gate. It’s inside a school dorm. Do you think there will be too many people?”
The map she pulled up showed a school called Sunshine High School.
“I figured that since the students are on vacation, the school should be pretty empty, making it easier for us to move around.”
“Sounds good!”
“Awesome, then I’ll take a quick break.”
With a target in mind, Zhao Mingyue polished off her dinner, took a hot shower, and changed into her pajamas, setting her alarm for one in the morning.
With her half-human, half-ghost status, she still needed sleep to recharge her energy.

“Be careful! Don’t let the school security catch you!”
With nimble movements, she flipped over the school wall, crouching down in the shadows of the courtyard. She whispered to Bai Yu, who stood beside her.
Bai Yu shot her a sideways glance, his eyes saying, “Really?”
“C’mon, it’s summer break! The school security is practically nonexistent, and at this hour, everyone who should be sleeping is indeed asleep. There aren’t even any students around to worry about.”
Besides, the cameras were just junk to her; she could mask her energy to block electronic signals and influence the operation of the surveillance system.
As they moved toward the dormitory section of the school, Bai Yu didn’t sense any obvious traces of evil spirits.
“Hey, wait for me!”
Zhao Mingyue called as she hurried to catch up with Bai Yu, walking side by side through the eerily quiet school.
“I’ve heard that most schools are built over mass graves or execution sites, which is why there are so many ghost stories. Looking around now, maybe reality isn’t that exaggerated, but maybe some folks really have encountered ghosts.”
Surveying her surroundings, the campus felt eerily still in the post-midnight hour, and there was a tinge of terror lurking in the dark.
Eventually, they stumbled into the dormitory area. Without Bai Yu saying a word, Zhao Mingyue immediately spotted the dorm where the Ghost Gate was located. The resentment pouring out was practically visible, seeping through the walls. It was clear this was no ordinary haunt; it definitely wasn’t just a few troubled spirits inside—there had to be at least one Red-clothed Evil Ghost in the mix.
“What happened? Wasn’t it clean when we got here?” she rushed up to the dorm’s door.
On her way, she had observed that the school itself was spotless, completely devoid of any resentment. At first, she thought the Ghost Gates had a gatekeeper who kept things tidy, but now it was obvious this was far from a simple cleaning issue. She even suspected someone was using the Ghost Gate to raise spirits.
Otherwise, there’s no way an ordinary Ghost Gate would become like this. Someone must have been raising spirits in a way that allowed them to devour each other until a Red-clothed Evil Ghost-level king spirit emerged.
Her heart sank; she had once fantasized about the outside world being a harmonious place without chaotic organizations like the Ghost Domain stirring up trouble.
She couldn’t be sure if this Ghost Gate was being controlled by a gatekeeper.
It was evident the dorm’s entrance had been closed for quite a while. The doorknob, chain, and padlock were covered in thick dust, and the area in front of the door hadn’t seen a single cleaner.
“Let’s check it out,” Bai Yu said, using a tentacle to unlock the padlock. The moment he swung the door open, a wave of intense resentment rushed out to greet them.
Inside the dorm, walls, ceilings, and floors were covered with symbols etched in bl**d. It was these very symbols keeping the spirits trapped inside and muffling the sounds within.
Before the door was opened, it had been eerily silent; now, from deep within the dorm, came a chilling, raspy chorus of cries.
“This person has some serious guts, raising spirits in a still-operational school.”
“What if something goes wrong and the spirits inside escape? How many students could end up in danger?”
Zhao Mingyue cast a glance at Bai Yu, whose expression seemed to say, “Don’t worry, I’ve got this.”
Only then did it dawn on her: Bai Yu really did look like a “god” now, ready to save so many innocent teachers and students in this school.
Turning a bunch of ticking time bombs into believers who could only babble like babies—now that’s what I call saving the world!
Just imagine how the spirit-raiser would react when he saw his spirits end up like this!
