Chapter 147

### Chapter 147: Let Go

“I’m so bored, and my younger sister isn’t here, I’m really, really bored.”

Xia Ling plopped onto the living room’s big sofa with a sigh. Finally, her second brother was willing to be her little sister, but before she could get enough of it, Jiang Kekai swooped her away, which made her heart even more miserable.

Plus, Xia Yu still doesn’t know when she’ll be back, leaving Xia Ling feeling quite desperate.

“Little Ling, you should sit up properly. You’re making the whole sofa yours, and girls shouldn’t behave like that. Be more ladylike.” Wang Wenjuan arrived, and unsurprisingly, Xia Ling felt a tap on her bottom.

When her mother showed up, Xia Ling knew better than to be rowdy, so she sat up obediently. After all, her mother was the bane of every daughter’s existence.

Suddenly, Xia Ling had an idea and clung to her mother’s arm, emitting a cute, adorable voice, “Mom, can you bring my younger sister back?”

“Oh, I wish I could bring Xia Yu back. But the Missus won’t let me do anything about it,” stated Wang Wenjuan, equally frustrated.

She yearned for her new daughter to return as well. But Jiang Kekai’s influence is so great that she has to give in.

Still, the whole family has noticed Jiang Kekai’s kindness toward Xia Yu, which reassures them to let her take Xia Yu away. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have agreed.

As for Xia Le, he was busy chatting with Lin Shaoshao on his outdated phone.

True, even though Xia Le bought a new phone, he was afraid to show it off, fearing his parents would confiscate it or ask about his income. So… he used the old phone whenever his parents were around and switched to the new one later.

At around 10:30 PM, the Jiang compound’s garage echoed with the rumbling of cars, and a line of vehicles entered.

Sure enough, Jiang Bin, his wife, and Jiang Dong returned at this hour. “Butler, you can serve dinner now.”

Seeing the butler come to welcome them, Jiang Bin issued his orders immediately.

Even after returning from a fancy restaurant, Jiang Bin was still hungry and needed something to fill his stomach. He had instructed someone to prepare snacks earlier, so everything was just perfect when they got home.

Meanwhile, a maidservant knocked on Jiang Kekai’s door.

“Missus, the master has returned for some midnight snacks. Would you like to join him?”

“Oh, I understand.”

It’s snack time already? Jiang Kekai checked the clock on her computer; it was indeed 10:30 PM and realized she forgot to prepare dinner for Xia Yu.

Turning to Xia Yu who was sleeping soundly on her shoulder, Jiang Kekai decided to pinch her nose gently to wake her up. Sure enough, Xia Yu’s eyes popped open, and there stood Jiang Kekai with a gentle smile, “Xia Yu, are you hungry? Want to come eat something?”

“Huh? Um…”

In this unfamiliar environment, Xia Yu only felt safe by Jiang Kekai’s side. So naturally, she didn’t reject Jiang Kekai’s invitation. If she could, she’d follow Jiang Kekai wherever she went, but she worries Jiang Kekai thinks of her as a burden.

Currently, Xia Yu felt conflicted: Should she rely so much on Jiang Kekai? What if Jiang Kekai gets tired of her like her old brother did? Before she could think too much, Jiang Kekai held Xia Yu’s hand, pulling her back from her thoughts.

“Xia Yu, if we’re going to eat, let’s go now, or my parents will be waiting.”

Under Jiang Kekai’s lead, Jiang Kekai and Xia Yu both arrived in the grand living room of the Jiang household.

Sure enough, their arrival drew everyone’s attention, including the servants waiting nearby. Xia Yu was particularly the focus of everyone’s gaze, but Jiang Kekai didn’t mind; she was used to such attention.

However, for Xia Yu, everything was new and confusing. She couldn’t understand why so many servants were around. To her, it seemed pointless.

Unconsciously, Xia Ling hid behind Xia Yu. By the time they reached the dining table, Jiang Kekai had no choice but to pull Xia Yu out and put her in a chair.

Watching how Jiang Kekai and Xia Yu interacted, everybody was quiet—probably because they were getting used to it.

Midnight snacks? Who cared what they ate? They were having barbecue. Thus, all the dishes were grilled.

Jiang Kekai held a piece of beef skewer and offered it not to herself but to Xia Yu playfully, “Xia Yu, go ahead.”

Xia Yu hesitated slightly before obediently nibbled on it.

Jiang Kekai found this incredibly endearing and let go of the skewer to pinch Xia Yu’s cute little face. This scene was bittersweet for Jiang Dong and Jiang Hanhang, who were single dogs and felt left out.

“Hmm, I’m done. Enjoy your meal.”

After finishing some meat skewers, Jiang Dong was the first to stand up. He glanced over, noticing Xia Yu munching on the barbecue, wondering how she became friends with Xia Yu’s sister. He was still struggling to comprehend it.

Then came Jiang Hanhang, worried about gaining weight and avoiding oily late-night snacks, she only tasted a tiny bit.

This early departure had something to do with Xia Yu. Jiang Hanhang felt a surge of jealousy seeing Xia Yu close to her sister.

Jiang Hanhang and Jiang Kekai were actually good friends, but they feared Xia Yu might overshadow them.

That left Jiang Bin, his wife, Xia Yu, and Jiang Kekai enjoying their food.

Despite the servants around, Jiang Bin dismissed them from his mind and asked Xia Yu, “Xia Yu, did Xia Ning arrange your room? Or do you want me to set you up in a nicer room?”

Jiang Bin began to pay more attention to his eldest daughter. He realized he could no longer ignore the way Xia Yu and Jiang Kekai interacted. Not wanting to see his eldest daughter take a path he couldn’t undo, he took precautionary measures based on hearsay.

Furthermore, seeing how spoiled his daughter was with Xia Yu, Jiang Bin believed the rumors about them were true. He thought being cautious couldn’t hurt.

But Jiang Kekai was having none of it. She replied calmly, “No need. Xia Yu is staying with me, and this villa doesn’t have any better rooms for me anyway.”

Saying so, she looked sharply at her father, telling him not to disrupt their arrangement. Xia Yu was Jiang Kekai’s treasure.

Sure, Jiang Bin deserved credit for bringing Xia Yu home, but she wasn’t about to lose such an opportunity. As Jiang Kekai’s most ambitious and outspoken child, she was the only one brave enough to argue with her father.

Nonetheless, this didn’t affect Jiang Bin’s love for his daughter.

He initially thought she was just playing along, but discovering the seriousness, he also felt relieved knowing Xia Yu was physically intact — avoiding the possibility of pregnancy. That way, the Jiang name would stay untarnished.

Thinking about it, Jiang Bin felt much lighter. Yes, Xia Yu was indeed cut. There was nothing to worry about, and if she grew tired someday, he was sure she’d let go.

Realizing he was overthinking things due to rumors, he chuckled at himself.

Even worse, if his eldest daughter genuinely liked Xia Yu, so what? It couldn’t be worse than a marriage to another man for children.

“Alright alright, let’s just live together. Just don’t stay up too late, understood?”

Facing her father’s change of attitude, Jiang Kekai wondered if he had overindulged, perhaps drunk. With his earlier opposition, Jiang Kekai felt a bit down and left with Xia Yu, still munching on barbecue.

“Hmm, I’m done too. Go ahead.”

“Hmm, shouldn’t we step in concerning Xia Ning?”

Noticing Jiang Kekai taking Xia Yu away in the elevator, Zhang Yunzhi couldn’t help but question her husband. Curious, she pondered why he changed his stance. Before, he insisted they keep them apart.

“No, let them be. Who knows what fun they might have? They’ll relax once they get bored.”

For the servants, this meant Jiang Kekai was just playing around.
