Chapter 24: Divination
Mo Tu’s star is called “He Tu Luo Shu,” and one of its effects is “Divination,” boasting a 90% success rate in providing clues about an event.
However, the cost of this effect varies based on how significant the event is and the level of detail required. The more critical the event, the higher the cost, and the lower the success rate.
Trying to divine when the apocalypse is coming? That’s just asking for trouble.
But divining for an individual, like an ordinary person, is still on the table.
Typically, when Mo Tu conducts a divination, he ends up with a handful of information.
Where are they from? What are they like? What’s their future destiny? You know, the good stuff.
This is super handy for tracking people down.
If the divination fails, aside from that tiny chance of failure, it means there’s something extremely important about that person that Mo Tu isn’t worthy enough to divine.
Like that silver-haired loli and the black-haired loli—when he tried to divine them, all he got was a cloud of mist and a few random bits of info.
Plus, the failure rate was ridiculously high.
If he paid a “little” price, he might glimpse their general location, kind of like getting a satellite fix.
Why is it so hard to divine them?
Mo Tu suspects it’s the influence of the Extraordinary Star. Maybe that thing really does have the power to mess with the world. The energy cost for a single divination is astronomical, and the failure rate is absurdly high—what a truly divine star.
But now there’s another situation like Night Star and Night Lan.
From that last divination that nearly drained his mental energy like a vacuum and failed in a flash, it was clear what was up.
Aside from the fact that she has an ultra-high-grade star inside her, there’s really no other explanation.
Mo Tu clicked his tongue, finally feeling some excitement.
“A big catch, indeed~”
He’s not one to be an extreme star-dependent divinatory person; most of the time, he relies on his own wits to think through a situation.
Constantly doing divination would frankly be a bit bland.
However, Mo Tu knows that a Supernova Star Eclipse is about to erupt next, and as a Night Watcher, it’s his duty to fully engage in that identity.
Plus, from various clues provided by the divination, he’s already deduced that this event will definitely involve Night Star.
The people around her are also crucial leads.
Snag one of them, and a divination will surely follow.
Looking at it now, that choice seems spot-on.
“So, here’s the question: Is that girl the trigger for the Doll City star eclipse?”
That’s still up in the air.
After all, the girl next to Night Star looks like your average person—any seasoned Night Watcher would probably overlook her without a second thought.
Which means, apart from being cute, she’s got zero specialness about her.
“Heh, let’s go take a look.”
With a smile on his face, Mo Tu stood up and made his way over.
…
On the other side.
Lianhua was closely following behind Night Star.
“Wait, Night Star’s house is nearby? It doesn’t feel too far from mine.”
“Umm, I’m temporarily staying here.”
After all, once her wish is fulfilled, she can return to the normal timeline.
By then, she won’t be in Shanghe City; she’ll be in Yun Chang City, continuing her epic couch potato lifestyle of looking after herself (Night Lan) while letting herself (Night Star) flounder along.
And then everything about Shanghe City would be none of her business.
No need to see that super scary dead fish-eyed uncle anymore—though she would miss the adorably clueless Lan Feng Su Yu a bit, since she’s a new friend.
That’s how Night Star was feeling.
Just then, she spotted a black-haired youth walking towards her, looking like they might bump into each other by chance.
“Hey, Night Star! Just got back from outside?”
“Um, yes,” Night Star replied simply to Mo Tu.
Mo Tu glanced over at the little loli beside Night Star and smiled slightly, looking warm and inviting—definitely not giving off any bad vibes.
“Is this your friend? She looks pretty cute! What’s her name?”
Lianhua stepped forward, being all polite. “Hello, big brother! I’m Night Star’s friend, and my name is Lianhua.”
“Lianhua? That’s a lovely name.”
After getting the answers he wanted, Mo Tu prepped to leave.
“I need to go buy some groceries for dinner. You two have fun! Bye!”
“Bye~” Lianhua waved her hand lightly.
After he walked away, Lianhua started getting curious.
“Night Star, who was that big brother? He seemed really cool!”
Night Star pondered for a moment before replying, “At most, he’s just a neighbor—a really nice guy, but I suspect he might have a thing for lolis, so just be careful.”
If Mo Tu knew Night Star was tarnishing his reputation like this, he’d probably be rolling on the floor in laughter.
“Really? I thought he was like your brother or something.”
“Umm… let’s not talk about that. Come on, we’re almost home.”
“Okay!”
After walking a bit more, they finally reached the front door.
Night Star paused for a moment, steeling herself mentally before swinging the door open.
“I’m back!”
“Welcome… ah?!”
Sure enough.
As soon as Night Star opened the door, a half-transparent figure lunged at her.
Aipar was indeed still here!
But before Aipar could finish her sentence, she suddenly halted.
Even the figure that flew over came to a stop.
The reason? She spotted the unfamiliar girl behind Night Star.
This shocked Aipar because Night Star actually brought a girl home!
“Come in, Lianhua.”
Night Star glanced at Lianhua’s expression, which seemed completely unchanged.
Looks like she really can’t see Aipar the Ghost Girl or hear her voice.
Then, Night Star quietly winked at Aipar, who looked a bit dazed, signaling her to play along.
“Lianhua, you sit here for a minute; I’ll pop to the bathroom. I’ll be right back.”
“Okay.”
Night Star headed straight for the bathroom, with Aipar trailing behind her, having gotten the hint.
Once they reached the bathroom, Night Star locked the door and fixed her serious gaze on the ghostly figure.
“Aipar.”
“Hmm?”
“That’s my friend. She’s here to visit today, so you absolutely cannot scare her. Got it?”
“Oh~ I understand.”
“Perfect!”
Night Star wasn’t sure if her verbal warning would actually work, but hopefully, Aipar wouldn’t overdo it.
Back outside.
Lianhua was sitting on a cushion, curiously observing her surroundings, looking a bit anxious.
When she saw Night Star return, she spoke up, “Umm… Night Star, where are your family members?”
“I currently live alone; I don’t have any family here.”
“I see…”
Lianhua was at a loss for words, feeling a bit awkward.
This made Night Star chuckle.
Aw, it looks like just like her, she gets a bit nervous and shy when visiting someone else’s house—that’s just too cute!
“Well then~ No need to be nervous! I’ll grab some snacks for you.”
“Umm, thanks for the trouble.”
“Not a trouble at all!”
Night Star turned to leave.
Aipar floated around curiously beside Lianhua, her little strands of hair bobbing in rhythm like a puppy sniffing around when meeting someone new.
Then, she leaned in closer to Lianhua, casually blowing a soft breath in her ear.
“Ah!”
Night Star turned around to see Lianhua, covering her ear, looking utterly puzzled while a ghostly figure giggled nearby. It didn’t take long for her to piece together what had happened.
“Geez… for crying out loud.”
