Chapter 70: Do You Still Remember Me?
When Night Lan finally snapped out of her stupor, she realized that things had taken a terrible turn in just one night.
The existence of Blank Songstress has disappeared?
And it’s turning into Star Eclipses?
This doesn’t seem right at all!
Blank wasn’t under any life-threatening danger and her mental health was fine. She definitely couldn’t have caused a mutation in the Stars. So why did she suddenly turn into a Star Eclipses?
Night Lan felt emotionally complex.
But there was some good news; Blank hadn’t become a Singer.
Future singers already forgot everything and wouldn’t leave any trace behind.
Blank still hadn’t forgotten her identity, and Night Lan hadn’t forgotten anything about her. That was a relief.
As long as she remembered, there was still hope for salvation.
But even so, Night Lan felt extremely down.
No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t change the fact that Blank turned into Star Eclipses. She felt completely useless.
“It was supposed to be a promise…”
Seeing Night Lan’s sad expression, Blank walked over and hugged her comfortingly, whispering, “It’s not your fault, Night Lan. You’ve already done your best. This might be because of me. As long as you remember me in this chaotic world, I don’t mind. You have kept your end of the bargain. When I knew you still remembered me, I felt genuinely happy. Maybe things like this can work out after all.”
“Mmm…”
Seeing this, Mo Tu withdrew his gaze and looked around at Bai Yuan and others nearby.
“If I’m not mistaken, this is probably due to the Star itself changing. No one knows what limitations a Breakthrough Star might have. And for the Songstress to appear this way, it’s probably caused by instability within the Star.”
Upon hearing Mo Tu’s analysis, Xiao Jin fell deep in thought.
“Why would it suddenly go unstable? There were no abnormalities before. What could have triggered such a sudden change?”
Wang Chao nodded thoughtfully. “Maybe it’s just too strong. The stronger something is, the scarier it becomes. Like an overflow of data that disrupts the balance, leading to a bug in the system.”
Everybody agreed with Wang Chao’s analogy.
“This is definitely possible. The growth of the Star Songstress is incredibly fast. According to her, it didn’t take more than a month since she awakened until she was capable of concealing information about everything, which is abnormal.”
Mo Tu raised his eyes and noticed an issue.
“What level is her current mental power?”
Everyone carefully sensed it, and Wang Chao was the first to give a result, his lips twitching.
“At least A-level.”
“That’s ridiculous.”
“Unreal.”
“Indeed.”
Such abnormal growth speed could even apply for a world record.
If we put this inside the Nightwatchers, this is beyond anyone’s capabilities.
After hearing this, Mo Tu sighed.
“So, when a Breakthrough Star holder reaches an A-level mental power, irreversible changes occur, right? Currently, visible signs include loss of control over abilities or slowly becoming Star Eclipses?”
Blank is still in the human stage. She only has faint traces of the Star Eclipses aura on her, hence the term slow transformation.
If left unchecked, she will eventually turn into a Star Eclipses.
At that point, who knows what would happen next?
“Does the mental power of a Breakthrough Star holder affect the state of the star?”
Xiao Jin murmured to himself.
He didn’t immediately refute Mo Tu’s analysis.
Since Blank Songstress is the Nightwatcher’s first discovery of a Breakthrough Star holder, they haven’t had time to thoroughly research it. How could they possibly know its secrets?
If Breakthrough Stars really had such characteristics, wouldn’t that mean Night Lan…
Thinking up to this, Xiao Jin looked at Night Lan and asked seriously, “Night Lan, what is your current level of mental strength?”
“Mmm…I remember it’s C-level.”
“That’s good. Don’t rush your growth. Until we fully explore the secrets of Breakthrough Stars, don’t boost your mental power purposely. Maintain your current level, and try not to use Stars frivolously, okay?”
“Mmm…I’ll try my best…”
Xiao Jin then looked at Blank with a heavy heart.
“Miss Blank, apart from the disappearance of your identity, do you feel anything unusual?”
Unlike them, who were tense, Blank gradually relaxed ever since she knew that Night Lan remembered everything about her.
“I had a dream yesterday; standing on a stage singing while many people called me by my title. Then, there was a surge of information coming into my head; all about identities and geographical locations. It was infinite, and I couldn’t bear it. So, I wished for my existence to disappear, not to let them mention me anymore…”
“Oh?”
Everybody understood.
Lifting an eyebrow, Mo Tu said, “So, the further upgrade of the Characteristics Star led you to feel overwhelmed, causing you to unconsciously hide yourself by using the Star, is that correct?”
“It seems like it.”
“Then the instability of a Breakthrough Star reinforces this idea, leading to a gradual transformation into a Star Eclipses. Becoming a Star Eclipses allows you to remain unobserved, and eventually, your entire existence would vanish from everyone’s sight.”
Mo Tu’s analysis made perfect sense. He had pieced together almost all the reasons behind the events.
Everybody quickly accepted this truth.
Looking at Blank, then at Night Lan, Wang Chao gasped.
“But I don’t understand. Why did we forget, but this little loli didn’t?”
Mo Tu glanced at him, speechless.
“If you had a Breakthrough Star, you would get it.”
“Oh, well, alright then.”
Wang Chao decided to chill and not take the situation too seriously.
He figured he wasn’t suitable for such scenarios anyway.
Even if Mo Tu despised him, it was fine.
This guy could mess with others’ black history; it was just best to stay away.
Taking a deep breath, Xiao Jin told Blank, “Miss Blank, we’ll figure something out. For now, please stay in the Nightwatcher base, and refrain from using your Star.”
“Okay.”
Blank and Night Lan left the reception room. The atmosphere between them was a bit awkward.
Hearing Mo Tu and the rest’s analysis, Night Lan also knew it wasn’t her fault. But she still felt a bit guilty.
“Night Lan feels guilty?” Blank suddenly asked.
“Mmm…”
“Why though?”
“Because despite having promised, I couldn’t do it. I said I’d stop you from turning into a Star Eclipses.”
Now, Night Lan decided to reveal the truth about her visit to this timeline.
“In fact, I have a Breakthrough Star too. I came back from the future to see you.”
Blank blinked in surprise, her mouth curling into a smile.
“So, what’s happening with Future me?”
“In the future, nobody remembers the Blank Songstress. Everyone forgets her, like she never existed. Instead, there’s another person as the World Songstress. It’s a completely different scenario.”
“Is that so. Does that mean Future me must feel really lonely?”
“Not really. In the future, you’ve forgotten everything and don’t even remember being the Blank Songstress. You’re acting in an opera troupe as a singer.”
“So even I lost my memory?”
“Mm…That’s why I was surprised when I returned to this timeline. I realized you were the World Songstress.”
Blank seemed to think deeply and lowered her head slightly.
“So, that means Future me became a complete Star Eclipses, right?”
“Yeah, everybody calls you a Singer. Even as a Star Eclipses, you still love singing. That’s what made me want to meet you, a wonderful bond.”
“Is that so. Then what happened next?”
“Um…Your existence as a Singer had to be hidden as well. The troupe members forgot about you, including me.”
When Night Lan mentioned forgetting her, Blank felt a wave of sadness.
As Blank Songstress vanished from the world, and her future self as a Singer disappearing from the memories of those around her, nobody remembered who she was. Not even herself.
It felt terrifying.
Thinking about it, Blank felt incredibly sad.
Was it all because of the power within her?
Without that power, she might’ve been able to continue living as a Songstress, without being targeted by dangerous people and always remaining in others’ memories.
But here they were, back to square one, even worse off.
At that moment, Night Lan spoke.
“But now I don’t want to forget. To hear your voice again, I came here. Can you trust me? I won’t let you disappear.”
Blank raised her head, staring vacantly at Night Lan’s face, sensing her determination and sincerity.
Yeah, there was still someone who remembered her. As long as she remembered, things could be accepted now.
This was good.
Blank smiled gently.
“Yeah, I believe you’ll do it.”
“Now, can you sing a song for me? I can’t find your songs online, so I want to record it.”
“Sure!”
They returned to their room.
Night Lan activated the recording device, ready to capture the voices.
Blank closed her eyes, letting her thoughts wander.
“This song is called ‘Remember Me.’ I hope you’ll always remember me.”
As Blank opened her mouth, beautiful melodies filled the room.
Night Lan listened closely, recording her song, feeling the longing and determination in Blank’s voice.
She never wanted to be forgotten.
Her song expressed her desire to be remembered, highlighting herself in every way possible, to attract attention and leave traces in people’s memories, even if they were fleeting.
Night Lan closed her eyes, quiet.
“I’ll make sure of it.”
…
Time passed swiftly as Mo Tu and the others still sought ways to stabilize Blank’s condition.
They scoured through volumes of notes, consulted vast amounts of data, just to prevent Blank from turning into Star Eclipses.
However, there wasn’t a single record among the Nightwatchers about stopping Star Eclipses transformation for Breakthrough Stars.
Lower-tier Stars could be temporarily sealed using the seal method. With other Nightwatchers’ Stars, they could interrupt the process.
Releasing them afterward would restore them to normal.
But Blank’s star status was classified as Breakthrough.
No one currently had the ability to seal that type of Star. Even Star technology wouldn’t be effective.
So it was a tricky situation.
Mo Tu thought the instability of those Breakthrough Stars likely stemmed from excess power.
Could decreasing their mental power stabilize these Breakthrough Stars?
His conjecture was met with approval, yet there was a problem. They lacked such a mental force-diminishing agent in Yun Chang City.
Even if there was one, it wouldn’t work on the holders of Breakthrough Stars.
Most likely, such an item was only available at headquarters.
Xiao Jin promptly reported Blank’s situation to headquarters, receiving high priority.
Higher authorities took this incident seriously. Beyond advanced Star technology, senior Nightwatchers like Sunlight were sent.
They were expected to arrive in Yun Chang City the next day.
Hopefully, a solution would finally arise.
…
The very next day.
Blank woke up, her expression blank and confused.
“Almost forgot who I am… Is this what Night Lan meant by losing myself?”
After a while, Blank moved with a mix of emotions, preparing to visit Night Lan in the next room.
Opening the door revealed Night Lan still sleeping peacefully.
Blank realized it was still early, far from waking hours.
“Shouldn’t disturb her.”
Blank left her room and explored the Nightwatcher base.
Along the way, she encountered various Nightwatchers, early risers possibly due to routine patrol tasks.
“Good morning~”
Blank greeted a passing Nightwatcher, not getting a response.
“Ah…”
She realized something and lowered her hand silently.
Yes.
Nowadays, except for Mr. Xiao Jin and his team, nobody paid attention to her—even those who once supported her.
Blank continued onward, not disturbing anyone.
Then, someone familiar appeared: Mo Tu.
“Mr. Mo Tu!”
Lifting his eyes, Mo Tu looked at her.
“Yes? What can I do for you?”
“You’ve worked hard today too.”
“Not much. My duties are limited.”
“In that case, take care of yourself. Don’t stress yourself out.”
“…”
Silent, Mo Tu continued.
“By the way, who are you?”
“Eh…?” Blank froze.
Your presence is too low. If you hadn’t stopped me just now, I might not have even noticed you. Moreover, the aura of Star Eclipses on you is growing serious. If abnormalities arise, report to higher-ups to temporarily seal your star.
“Aaah… Yes…”
Blank instinctively stepped back a few steps, panic creeping across her face, and turned back to leave.
It’s a lie.
It’s another forgetful episode.
Yesterday I remembered everything.
Blank returned to the room where Night Lan resides, seeing her sleeping on the bed, and finally couldn’t hold back, running forward and hugging her.
“Still remember me?”
