Chapter 7: Modern Small World (8)
==============================
“Director, here’s last night’s operation report. Besides Patient 233 getting their eyes injured and sent to the hospital, we’ve pretty much achieved our reconnaissance goals.”
Nie Zhengchu handed the report to Lin Nan.
Lin Nan flipped through the report casually before setting it aside, “Nie Bureau Director, just give me the summary.”
To the operatives of the Special Operations Bureau, Lin Nan’s strikingly cold face was definitely something to admire from afar but never dare approach.
The director’s orders were practically a decree from the heavens; no matter how difficult the task, everyone had to think of ways to get it done.
Though Nie Zhengchu wasn’t as fiercely passionate as the younger folks, he still held immense respect and admiration for the bureau director.
Clearly, this was part of the director’s test for him.
It was his first time commanding such a crucial operation in the year he’d been with the bureau, so he had to choose his words carefully, aiming to express his intentions as concisely as possible.
“I believe this is the most serious crisis Ocean City has faced since the Special Operations Bureau was established.
The enemy not only outnumbers us but their average strength is at least B-level or higher. Their leader’s danger level could even be beyond SS-level.
Once they initiate an attack, the destruction they’ll cause in Ocean City will be catastrophic.
Relying solely on our bureau to halt their actions is quite difficult and nearly impossible.”
Lin Nan nodded slightly. Nie Zhengchu’s assessment was indeed in line with reality.
The soldiers from Ji Shen and the Demon Race had personal combat abilities far surpassing those of the common folks in this small world. If they struck, they could quickly gain absolute dominance.
To them, Ocean City’s so-called defenses were as flimsy as paper, easily shred to bits.
“What do you think we should do about this crisis?” Lin Nan asked.
Nie Zhengchu had already thought about this issue extensively. He replied swiftly, “I have two suggestions.
First, capture the leader first. Regardless of their purpose in Ocean City, if we can subdue or capture their leader, we can completely foil their plans. Since they hail from a relatively ancient organization, the lower-tier soldiers don’t have a clear action agenda; they primarily follow their leader’s authority. Once we catch the leader, the rest will retreat without a fight.
Second, we should immediately report the situation and request support from the outer military. This can be done simultaneously with the first plan. If we fail to capture the enemy leader, we must be prepared for an all-out war. No matter the losses, we must eliminate them within Ocean City to prevent them from roaming freely and endangering the nation.”
As the final boss, Lin Nan naturally knew the objectives of Fu Yetian and his crew.
She was also quite curious about how they planned to completely take control of Ocean City.
After all, the so-called cities in the Asking Dao Continent were nowhere near the vast scale and population of Ocean City. If they tossed in three thousand people, they wouldn’t even see a trace of them. Once a heavily armoured army intervened, even in street battles, they would gradually be outmatched and overwhelmed.
Moreover, with the presence of the Special Operations Bureau, how could Fu Yetian and his gang possibly leave unscathed?
Should she wait a little longer?
See what kind of tricks Fu Yetian and his crew could pull?
After all, there were still over twenty hours left until the mission deadline. If they couldn’t complete it successfully, they would automatically withdraw from Ocean City and end this labyrinth journey.
Thinking of this, Lin Nan ordered, “Nie Bureau Director, your planning is quite thorough. Let’s proceed with the second option for now and report to the Ocean City Committee, requesting military assistance.”
“Understood, Director,” Nie Zhengchu replied.
“As for our Special Operations Bureau, continue to arrange personnel for comprehensive surveillance. Remember, no matter how many people they split off from their team, we must strive to monitor everyone’s actions. If we lack manpower, immediately bring all police stations and precincts in Ocean City under our command.”
“Got it.”
Lin Nan confidently spoke. She had nearly perfected merging with the persona of the bureau director. Aside from her love for gaming, which slightly deviated from the original director’s interests, her role-playing degree was already at 100%.
But that didn’t affect the greater picture.
Nie Zhengchu immediately set out to execute Lin Nan’s instructions.
With the door firmly shut, Lin Nan lazily stretched.
What should she do next? Continue playing League of Legends or switch things up with a few rounds of Landlord?
……
Forget it, no more gaming! Playing would just mean losing!
Lin Nan mused, could it be because the original owner didn’t enjoy games that the small world kept punishing her for her gaming habits?
Slowly, she walked to the full-length mirror by the floor-to-ceiling window, staring at the stranger looking back at her.
What puzzled Lin Nan was that although the reflection was a new face, the aura was remarkably similar to that of the Cold Moon Witch. If it weren’t for the outfit shift to a modern-style office lady ensemble and the simple ponytail, seeing the witch next to her would surely dazzle onlookers.
Since she didn’t feel like staying in the office anymore, what should she do today?
As the final boss, should she meet the enemy in a timely manner to let them feel the complete malice of this world?
No, wait, didn’t the deputy bureau director mention one of the operatives was injured?
As the director, it seemed a bit off not to visit and check on them.
“Cheng Qiu, arrange a visit to the hospital.”
The ever-ready secretary Cheng Qiu in the adjacent office room replied instantly, “In five minutes, a car will be waiting for you at the entrance of elevator 2 in the underground garage.”
“Alright, got it.”
Just as Lin Nan was about to slip her phone into her pocket, she realized she didn’t have a single pocket on her anywhere. Glancing at the variety of bags hanging on the clothes rack nearby, she picked one she deemed not too flashy.
Arriving at the elevator, she saw the respectful Cheng Qiu waiting.
Cheng Qiu accompanied Lin Nan while constantly sending messages, as if arranging the visit.
During the ride to the hospital, Lin Nan maintained silence, taking the opportunity to catch a quick nap. Just as the business car rolled to a stop at the hospital entrance, she woke up.
“Director, we’ve arrived at the hospital.”
Lin Nan nodded in acknowledgment.
Cheng Qiu must’ve already inquired about the specific hospital room, so there was no need for anyone to show them the way. They quickly walked toward the inpatient department of the municipal hospital.
“Director, 233 is on the 13th floor.”
“Okay.”
The hospital was its usual self, crowded to the brim. Even with six elevators in operation, they couldn’t contain the influx of people.
As soon as the elevator doors opened, before anyone inside could exit, people from outside surged in.
Lin Nan braced herself against the flow and protected Cheng Qiu as they squeezed into the elevator.
“Sorry, Director,” Cheng Qiu whispered.
Lin Nan replied, “No problem.”
Once they finally arrived at the 13th floor, Lin Nan inquired, “Which room are they in?”
Cheng Qiu explained, “When we came yesterday, the rooms were full, so 233 is temporarily in a bed addition.”
Lin Nan was momentarily stunned, “Bed addition? Did I hear you right? The hospital arranged a bed addition for our injured hero?!”
【Ding! You have activated a side quest! Worldline change in progress…】
