Chapter 2: Is This Me? A Chuunibyou Girl
Once Xiao Jin finished explaining everything, the group of newbies was ready to embark on their adventure.
Night Lan trailed behind them, boarding the plane.
Now all they had to do was wait for the flight to the capital.
Once they arrived, designated personnel would escort them back to the Night Watcher Headquarters, and then they would get to meet the Leader.
Sitting in her seat, Night Lan took a few deep breaths to calm her racing heart.
On this journey, without anyone trustworthy to look after her, she could only rely on herself. She had to make sure to stay safe!
Just then, someone sat down next to her—it must be another newbie.
Technically, Night Lan was a newbie too since she wasn’t even a full-fledged Night Watcher yet.
She turned to check out her seatmate, who turned out to be a girl.
This girl had gray, shoulder-length hair and was wearing a cloak, looking just a bit peculiar.
Night Lan felt it was necessary to say hello.
“Um, hi! I’m Night Lan, a fellow newbie.”
“Hmph! Are you speaking to me, mere mortal?”
“Uh… I guess so?”
With that cool tone, Night Lan already knew this was going to be an encounter with a super weird person.
The girl flicked her bangs with a dramatic flourish, her eyes sparkling with some bizarre form of admiration.
“Since you choose to speak to me, you must have noticed my exceptional qualities! I understand—my charm is unparalleled! Even the mortals on the ground worship me, especially you, my adorable little girl.”
“Uh, sure?”
Night Lan suddenly found herself at a loss for words.
Oh no, she had met a weirdo!
Or wait, based on her speech and tone, this was definitely a chuunibyou girl who somehow became a Night Watcher?!
Being chuunibyou without any special powers is already scary; what was this girl going to be like if she actually had some?!
In summary, Night Lan was starting to feel anxious.
But feeling anxious didn’t mean she would just ignore her—that would be super rude.
“So, how should I address you?”
“Oh ho! You dare to inquire about my name? You’re quite bold! I admire that. Therefore, I shall tell you, I am Night Feather, the ruler of the Dark Sky, come to inspect the human realm! Given the situation, it’s clear that humanity has degenerated and requires my saving! My appearance here is essential for reclaiming my lost powers.”
Night Feather flashed a charming smile, her eyes radiating a grandiosity only she seemed to possess, clearly playing the role of the “Ruler of the Dark Sky” with all seriousness.
If an ordinary person were to talk with her, they’d likely be completely confused—couldn’t decipher a word she said.
But Night Lan was at least familiar with anime and could barely keep up with the vibe.
Honestly, she had her own chuunibyou phase some time ago, but that was a lifetime away.
Now, Night Lan was just a happy person trying to binge-watch her favorite shows.
“Can I call you ‘Lord Night Rain’ then?”
Upon hearing this, Night Feather’s eyes lit up as if she had just won the lottery.
“Please do! I absolutely love that title!”
“Then it’s settled, Lord Night Rain.”
Night Lan awkwardly yet elegantly smiled, putting in the effort to play along.
Night Feather responded with delight, and aside from her chuunibyou quirk, she wasn’t too shabby.
Suddenly, she whipped off her cloak as if searching for something.
Before long, Night Feather pulled out a lollipop and cheerfully handed it to Night Lan.
“This is a gift for you, as a reward for charming me. Accept it!”
“Um, thank you?”
Night Lan hesitated to take the lollipop, feeling slightly hesitant.
Lord Night Rain! Pulling out a lollipop from a cloak is totally a mood killer! So embarrassing!
Noticing Night Lan’s expression, Night Feather thought she found it insufficient, so she reached back into her cloak to pull out a mountain of lollipops, each wedged between her fingers.
“Is this not enough? Such greed for a mere mortal! But I like you, and your respect delights me, so I’ll give you all of these gifts!”
Night Feather flashed a joyful grin.
Rarely did she find someone who tuned into her frequency, so how could she not be happy?
“Seriously, how can you pull out so many lollipops? Is your cloak a fourth-dimensional pocket?”
Night Lan was utterly flabbergasted by the sheer number of lollipops that appeared like magic.
In response, Night Feather proudly lifted her chin, showing off a smile she believed was incredibly cool.
“Mere mortal, this is one of my powers! Isn’t it magnificent? The darkness within my cloak houses an entire realm of the Dark Sky, naturally making room for countless lollipops!”
“But, isn’t it a bit odd for a ruler of the Dark Sky to be giving out lollipops? I don’t know, feels a bit off,” Night Lan couldn’t help but retort, quickly getting used to Night Feather’s unique character.
As a casual anime enthusiast, Night Lan was pretty accepting of bizarre quirks.
Besides, as long as they weren’t completely delusional, she could handle it.
Night Feather paused, pondering Night Lan’s comment.
“Is that so? I think it fits nicely. After all, lollipops taste great and are easy to carry! Having eight at once between the fingers is super cool!”
“But wouldn’t a small dagger be more intimidating?”
“Whipping that out in public would cause panic, so no. Lollipops are better! They can both be eaten and look cool—truly a prime choice!”
Night Feather seemed to momentarily drop the chuunibyou act, talking more reasonably now.
This surprised Night Lan.
So this chuunibyou girl could switch between chuunibyou and normal like a pro?
She proved to be more than just your typical chuunibyou case.
“Well, with that said, lollipops do seem the better option,” Night Lan admitted.
Hearing Night Lan’s approval, Night Feather gleefully stuffed the lollipops into her hands.
“Hmm~ It’s rare for someone to agree with my thoughts! You’re pretty great; here, these are all for you!”
“Uh, really, I don’t need this many.”
Night Lan awkwardly held the lollipops in her hands, feeling a bit stumped.
Meanwhile, Night Feather reached back into her cloak, pulling out another handful of lollipops and just staring at Night Lan.
“Whatever I offer has never been refused! Or do you want even more?”
“Ah, no, no, that’s plenty! If I get any more, I won’t finish them!”
“Alright, alright, I’ll just put them in my little backpack,” Night Lan resigned, shoving the lollipops inside.
What a weird character she had stumbled upon.
Wonder how she even became a Night Watcher?
From piecing together her character, it seemed likely she discovered her Star power one day, her chuunibyou spiraled out of control, and when she tried using her abilities, she caught the attention of patrolling Night Watchers.
After all, it’s only natural to be excited when a chuunibyou accidentally gets their hands on the dreamy supernatural power they’ve always wanted.
Honestly terrifying.
However, such a personality wouldn’t be well-received, and once training began, the officers would probably have a field day with her.
Of course, if she was strong enough, she could just turn the tables and take the officers down a peg or two.
It all came down to whose strength reigned supreme.
