2 Hello, Sister-in-Law!
To be honest, this is Rebecca’s first time having such a close encounter with a dragon—especially a Dragon King!
Like Leon, she was trained as a Dragon Slayer at the Empire’s Dragon Slayer Academy, raised on the principle of “defeat all evil dragons, reclaim humanity’s territory.”
Her understanding of dragons had always been black-and-white—enemies, all of them! As a Dragon Slayer, her job was to send them packing, one by one.
But after witnessing her captain marrying the female dragon beneath him, her perception started to shift, thanks to various abstract operations from her captain that gave her a new viewpoint on the dragon race.
While her understanding is still shallow, at least she’s come to realize one crucial truth:
Humans can indeed marry dragons, have kids, and manage a family without going all chaos mode!
If someone had told Rebecca before that humans and dragons could not only coexist peacefully but also produce three little dragonlings together, she would have drawn her g*n and checked if their head was stuffed with glue.
Even now, Rebecca still finds it hard to believe she’s sitting atop the Silver Dragon Queen, soaring freely in the clouds.
“Um… how should I call you?” Rebecca ventured to kick off a conversation.
I mean, the Silver Dragon Queen is graciously lifting her up for a fly to clear her mind; she couldn’t just sit there like a mute, right?
Gotta chat a bit, lighten the mood!
“Feel free! You can call me whatever you like.”
In the past, Roswiser cared a lot about how she was addressed.
During the early days after Leon woke up, Noia and Moon called her “Mother” or “Your Majesty.”
That shows how strict the Melkway family education was.
But as she spent more time with Leon, Roswiser started loosening up a bit.
As long as the title is appropriate, she doesn’t fuss too much about the details.
“Emmmmm…”
Rebecca pondered, and then light bulbs lit up in her little head.
“How about calling you… Sister-in-Law!”
The moment she said it, the massive dragon beneath her shook a little.
“Sis-sister-in-law?” The queen stammered, genuinely caught off guard by this girl’s creativity.
“Yep!”
Rebecca nodded, thinking Roswiser might not get the term “Sister-in-Law,” and so she earnestly explained:
“In human society, we call our brother’s wife sister-in-law; it’s kind of a respectful term. And since the captain is one year older than me, and he married you, that makes you my sister-in-law!”
“I know what ‘sister-in-law’ means; it’s just… just…”
“Just what?”
Rebecca thought the queen was feeling all high and mighty about being called sister-in-law by a human.
But Roswiser’s reply was,
“Actually, I’m not that close to your captain… you don’t need to call me sister-in-law.”
Rebecca widened her beautiful azure eyes,
“Not close with the captain? But you have three kids together!”
“Having kids doesn’t mean we’re close…”
Rebecca tilted her head, “So, are you two living together?”
“Does sharing a bed count as living together?”
“Duh, of course it does.”
“… Um, yes, we live together.”
Rebecca asked again, “Have you held hands?”
“We have…”
“Shared a kiss?”
“… Very rarely.”
Rarely, meaning every opportunity was hijacked for a make-out session.
“So, when was the last kiss?”
For some reason, the air stirred with warmth as the dragon’s wings flapped.
Rebecca didn’t think much of it; she just assumed it was the weather.
But if she turned her head slightly, she would see that the queen’s wings and tail had turned a tad crimson.
“Last kiss… was a long time ago. I already told you we rarely kiss, how could I remember?”
Roswiser wasn’t trying to lie on purpose.
She just wasn’t ready to come clean about everything with Leon’s crowd.
Humans have reservations about dragons, so it’s natural for dragons to be hesitant to trust humans right away.
By flying with Rebecca, Roswiser figured the girl was pretty cool, fun, and reliable; she also wanted to learn more about her.
Roswiser hoped to build a trusting relationship with interesting girls like Rebecca, which was why she offered this outing.
Just… before building trust, she thought it might be wise to keep the gossip level low.
“Oh, so it was a long time ago, was it? You really—”
“Not close, right?”
“Extremely close, Sister-in-Law.”
Rebecca chuckled as she playfully patted the scales on Roswiser’s back, “What’s so embarrassing about that?”
“I’m not… not embarrassed.”
Unbeknownst to her, it seemed like she was starting to accept being called sister-in-law.
Rebecca decided not to pry further into what her relationship with the captain was really like.
After all, the queen had already given her a nod to call her sister-in-law, so that was that!
“By the way, there’s an old saying among us humans—nothing beats good dumplings~”
“Hmm? And then?”
“Nothing looks better than a sister-in-law!”
“……”
“Ah! I finally said it—what a relief!”
Rebecca sprawled on the dragon’s back, gazing at the bright blue sky, her adorable face breaking into a smile of relief.
“The first time I saw you, I thought you were super gorgeous, unlike any dragon we’ve met before.”
“What did the other dragons look like?”
“They were all scary, coming right at us with the intention of munching on our bones.”
“Oh, actually, when I’m hungry, I might eat a human.”
Rebecca: ?!
“And I only choose quirky, pretty girls like you for my snack; one bite, and they’re all quiet!” Roswiser said with a laugh.
Realizing the queen was joking, Rebecca’s thumping little heart finally calmed down.
She pouted and continued, “But the other Dragon Kings felt like they were just impossible to communicate with. But you’re different. You seem cold, but chatting with you is quite easy!”
This time, Roswiser didn’t respond immediately.
She pondered for a moment and replied,
“Actually, our friendly conversation is simply a result of a series of unexpected events.”
Rebecca raised an eyebrow, “What do you mean?”
“If it weren’t for the Empire trying to assassinate Leon, he wouldn’t have been captured by me, and we wouldn’t have married; we sure wouldn’t be here chatting now.”
“Um… that’s definitely one series of unexpected events.” Rebecca contemplated.
“So essentially, I’m not that different from the Dragon Kings you’re familiar with,” Roswiser added.
After a pause, she jokingly continued, “Oh, except I don’t eat humans.”
Rebecca smiled faintly but stayed silent, waiting for Roswiser to continue.
“And your recent evaluation of me came after getting a rough idea about me, right?”
Rebecca nodded, “Yeah.”
“Rebecca, I’m not trying to defend this long-standing human-dragon war, but I just want to say it’s difficult to judge accurately without understanding each other.”
Roswiser said,
“To be honest, I used to hold some deep hostility towards your kind, and I don’t need to hide that. My union with Leon wasn’t exactly a walk in the park; he suffered a lot during the process.”
“Ah… Naturally, I also took my fair share of suffering.”
“My perspective on Leon and humans, in general, evolved slowly through my time with him.”
“Though I understand one person doesn’t represent an entire race, so besides Leon, I want to try and get to know the people around him.”
“Perhaps this will help me better understand what has been my enemy for a century and allow me to make the most accurate judgments.”
Rebecca fell quiet, pondering.
She rarely thought deeply.
But Roswiser’s words captivated her interest and deserved careful consideration.
After a bit, she softly asked, “So you’re trying to reach out to me to learn more about me?”
“Yup. So… now that you know my thoughts, what do you think?”
Rebecca bit her lip, deep in thought for a moment before saying,
“I never imagined discussing such things with a Dragon Queen. Perhaps calling you sister-in-law was a tad premature. Before that… let’s try becoming friends, shall we?”
Roswiser’s pupils flickered, and she chuckled, “I know, in your human world, that’s called… a bestie.”
Rebecca couldn’t help but laugh at the queen’s choice of words.
“Yup, a bestie! Even though a 200-year age gap is kind of huge… but the captain could marry you, so why can’t I be your bestie~”
Good thing we’re only talking besties, Your Majesty.
If you hadn’t mentioned it, I would’ve thought you wanted to adopt me as your goddaughter.
“So what do besties in your human society do when they hang out together?”
Rebecca thought for a moment and said,
“Chat, eat, grab a drink, gossip about boyfriends, and stuff. But I don’t have a boyfriend yet.”
Roswiser blinked, “You don’t have one, but I do!”
The silver dragon slightly turned her head to exchange a knowing glance with the girl on her back.
Two seconds later.
“Let me tell you, Your Majesty, the captain loves girls like you with silver hair the most! Back in school—”
General Leon will never know that day, his own loyal Artillery Master stripped him down to his undies for his wife to see.
