29 The Ultimate Reason
Leon kicked Constantine’s head away, letting that worn-out “big ball” roll around on the ground for a few spins.
He staggered back a few steps himself, looking a bit exhausted.
Honestly, this battle definitely ranks first in the “Top Ten Classic Battles of General Leon.”
Why first, you ask? Because so far, nothing else has put him under such pressure.
Sure, Constantine isn’t exactly a formidable Dragon King (at least not in Leon’s eyes), but thinking back, both encounters they had were rather memorable.
Leon looked at the decaying head and sneered.
“Finally, you can rest in peace now, old man.”
To beat a numbers monster, you need a stitched-together monster;
And to beat a stitched-together monster, only a game mechanic monster will do.
If he hadn’t held back for the Empire, this fight might not have ended so easily.
After catching his breath, hurried footsteps sounded behind him.
Leon turned around to see Roswiser and Isar.
The sisters ran over and glanced at Constantine’s head.
“All done?” Isar asked.
“Yep,” Leon nodded.
“You’re not hurt, are you?”
Roswiser checked his arms and shoulders while asking.
Leon smiled, gently pushed down on Roswiser’s wrist, and took her icy little hand, squeezing it just right to assure her he was fine.
“Don’t worry, I’m good,” Leon said.
The queen nodded slightly, her blush blooming under the cover of the night.
Isar exhaled in relief, dusted off her skirt, and crossed her arms as she tilted her head towards her sister and brother-in-law.
“Alright, you two lovebirds can show off later. Right now, someone explain to me why the Heartguard Dragon Scale suddenly turned into a ticking time bomb?”
As a seasoned Dragon King, Isar understood the nature of the Heartguard Dragon Scale very well.
It’s the ‘valve’ of dragon power and a kind of ‘safety measure’ to prevent dragons from endangering themselves when their power spirals out of control.
In certain specific cases, the Heartguard Dragon Scale can indeed become a super explosive, detonating not just the power accumulated over the years but also the inherent magic of dragons.
Throughout dragon history, there are famous tales of desperate dragons using the self-detonation of the Heartguard Dragon Scale to take their opponents down with them.
But while dragon scales can be used as bombs, the key point is that only their owners can set them off.
If any random dragon could blow up another’s scales, they’d never need to fight—just spend their days figuring out how to get their opponents riled up.
So, Leon exploding Constantine’s Dragon Scale with just a snap genuinely piqued Isar’s curiosity.
Seeing her sister’s thirst for knowledge, the couple exchanged knowing looks and quickly activated their team voice chat.
Roswiser: I can’t tell the truth; my sister is too smart. The moment you mention the Empire, she’ll suspect you immediately.
Leon: [I know, give me a few minutes to come up with a better excuse.]
Roswiser: [A few minutes? Where am I supposed to find that for you?]
Leon: [No choice, dear. You don’t want your husband’s human identity exposed, do you?]
Roswiser: [Hey! …… You j*rk, hurry up and think of something; I’ll help stall.]
Leon: [OK.]
The couple released their intertwined hands. Roswiser walked over to Isar, bit her lip, and then said,
“Actually… that wasn’t a ticking time bomb.”
Isar raised an eyebrow at her sister. “Not a time bomb? Then what is it?”
“It’s…… a remote-controlled bomb!”
“……”
Isar looked a bit speechless.
“Little Luo, no matter what kind of bomb it is, it’s just a simplistic metaphor; no need to nitpick.”
She said lightly, then slowly turned her gaze to Leon. “So, brother-in-law, how exactly did you do that?”
“Ah… sis, the thing is—”
Seeing her sister’s determination to get to the bottom of things, Roswiser’s brain was racing, thinking of various ways to buy time.
But her sister’s clever; she couldn’t just make up random nonsense to stall or it would be easier for her to see through.
However, Roswiser didn’t really excel at lying, and there wasn’t much witty banter she could throw at her sister right now.
Just as the queen was feeling desperate, that man finally spoke up.
“The thing is, sis.”
Isar nodded slightly. “Okay, go on.”
“During the six months I went missing, I inadvertently stumbled into a rift created by Rave and found myself in the future, twenty years ahead. You know that, right?”
“Yeah, Little Luo wrote to me about that a few days back, but she didn’t go into detail. I was meaning to ask you about it since I’d never seen anything like time travel before.”
Isar looked at Leon with keen interest. “So, your blowing up of Constantine’s Dragon Scale has something to do with your trip to the future?”
“Yeah, there’s a connection.”
Leon said, “First of all, that Dragon Scale isn’t the original Heartguard Dragon Scale, it belongs to Black Sun Dragon King · Blay. Because of that, he could use spatial magic to sneak into your Holy Temple and dodge Roswiser’s deadly attack.”
“Which explains how I detonated that scale.”
“When I returned from the future, Blay and Jagers were attacking Roswiser’s Silver Dragon Temple. I took care of them, along with four other Dragon Kings.”
“But I didn’t destroy their Heartguard Dragon Scales because while in the future…”
Leon took a slow breath, feeling a bit nervous as he was about to fib.
Roswiser was also sweating a bit, hoping the Dog Man could come up with a decent excuse and not let her sister catch on; otherwise, tonight’s resurrection battle might not end with just old Constantine’s loss.
“In the future, I discovered that a mysterious organization was collecting the Dragon Race’s Heartguard Dragon Scales for unclear reasons, but clearly, they are enemies.”
“So in that first battle after returning from the future, I deliberately held back, messing with Blay and the others’ Dragon Scales as a trump card for future surprises. Just like how I dealt with Constantine just now.”
After saying that, Leon looked at Roswiser.
Leon: [So, dear, what do you think of my excuse?]
Roswiser (her mouth twitching, looking utterly speechless):
【A certain, mysterious, organization—come on big guy, you thought of this hasty excuse in just two minutes?
Can you at least be a little less perfunctory?
You think my sister’s an idiot?
Do you think she’d believe that?】
Leon: [Why wouldn’t she believe it? I think my excuse is flawless (confident).]
Roswiser: [If she believes that, I’ll just—]
Isar suddenly had an epiphany. “Oh~~ so that’s how it is.”
She actually bought it!!
Leon shrugged, grinning at Roswiser.
【What did you just say, Your Majesty? You’ll just—?】
Roswiser: [I’ll just take my husband’s hand again, so what?]
The couple secretly leaned back together. Roswiser gently linked her arm with Leon’s and whispered into his ear,
“My sis just finished a fight, her brain might be a bit foggy, she didn’t dig too deep into your flimsy excuse, so just enjoy this moment.”
Leon whispered back, “We’ll patch things up later; let’s just get through tonight.”
Truth be told, Leon’s excuse was indeed quite flimsy.
He just replaced ‘Empire’ with ‘a certain mysterious organization.’
The rest was all the truth.
However, the Empire was undeniably the most critical part of his reasoning.
As long as he didn’t lead Isar to associate his bluffing with the Empire, no matter how smart she was, she wouldn’t instantly jump to thinking about humans.
After all, there are many races fighting against dragons, not just humans.
Everyone was constantly battling over those limited resources.
Seeing her sister believe Leon’s hastily thrown-together excuse, the couple sighed in relief.
Unbeknownst to them, Isar was secretly scrutinizing them, wondering,
“Something feels… off.”
Her brother-in-law was indeed a bit hard to read, but Isar couldn’t straightforwardly interrogate him, or she’d get nothing useful.
So… since you’re keeping an eye on that so-called mysterious organization, I’ll be cautious about you too, dear brother-in-law.
You certainly are a great family member, husband, and father,
But you’re definitely not a great… deceiver.
