Chapter 29: The Day Before the Sports Meeting
Wednesday Morning
Ning Chu was awoken by the blaring music from the school broadcast.
She rolled over and grabbed her phone off the pillow, squinting at the time—7:30 AM.
“Another day with no classes… Why the heck are they playing music this early?”
She buried her face in her quilt, grumbling in annoyance, “What a bunch of neurotics~”
“Ning Chu, I’m heading out!”
Ning Chu snapped awake, instantly alert, and turned to see Wen Yang already dressed in his sportswear and ready to bolt. “Wait! I’m coming too!”
She hurriedly scrambled down the ladder, fearing that Wen Yang might just ditch her, but in her frantic haste, she missed a rung.
“Ah!”
Wen Yang dashed up and caught her, concern etched on his face. “What’s the rush? You okay?”
“Ugh~ stubbed my foot.”
He glanced down at her flushed cheeks but couldn’t quite figure out if she was in pain or just flustered.
“Take it easy.”
“Yeah…”
Feeling a bit guilty, Ning Chu slowly hopped down, limping toward the balcony. “I’ll wash up and change. Just five minutes!”
“Alright.”
She filled her cup with water and brushed her teeth absentmindedly. Lately, pain seemed to come hand in hand with pleasure—this trend couldn’t continue!
Typically, a succubus would only turn pain into pleasure during those moments of… well, passion, but Ning Chu was still in the early stages of development and hadn’t unlocked that feature yet.
In a week or two, Aunt Flo would arrive, and if that continuous pain morphed into endless pleasure? Well, that would be catastrophic!
Finishing up her hygiene routine, she quickly changed her clothes and was ready to roll.
Meanwhile, Zhang Shaoqing was still in bed, glued to his phone, while Wang Jie snored contentedly.
“What’s the rush so early?” Ning Chu called over her shoulder as she followed Wen Yang out of the dorm.
“The instructor asked the class committee to set up our resting area,” Wen Yang yawned, clearly still half-asleep. “You know, moving tables, chairs, and water and all that jazz.”
“Oh~ do you have any events today?”
“Yeah, I have a 400-meter race, a long jump, and tomorrow afternoon there’s a relay, and the day after that, a 3,000-meter run.”
“Wow, you really are a goodie-two-shoes…”
Probably only Wen Yang would voluntarily sign up for that many events, each one of which could potentially attract a horde of fangirls.
What a headache.
After some light chit-chat, the pair reached the building entrance.
A few tables and boxes of water were haphazardly strewn about in the empty space, and the class committee was gathering to carry everything to the sports field.
As soon as Yan Xinya spotted them, her drooping tail perked up like an excited puppy, and she bounded over, wrapping her arms around Ning Chu’s waist. She sniffed playfully at Ning Chu’s face before calling out,
“Good morning!”
Ning Chu wasn’t used to such intimate contact with girls, but being hugged by Yan Xinya reminded her of the enthusiastic little puppy from her neighbor’s house back in the day.
Thank goodness the “Wolf Girl” just sniffed her face and didn’t take it a step further!
Automatically, she ruffled Yan Xinya’s little head, giving her a gentle push. “Morning.”
Wen Yang turned away, jealously pouting. They’d known each other for ages, but he had never dared to touch Ning Chu’s waist; the closest they’d gotten was holding hands.
Yan Xinya seemed to pick up on the jealousy, grinning mischievously at Wen Yang. “Don’t worry! I’m not stealing Ning Chu from you~ I don’t even like girls!”
She was all about matchmaking the tsundere girl and the oblivious guy! There was no way she’d compete with Wen Yang for Ning Chu!
Wen Yang, ignoring her, picked up a table by himself.
“Ning Chu, you come help too?”
“Sure.”
Yan Xinya effortlessly hoisted two boxes of water, zooming ahead like a superhero.
Ning Chu struggled with just one box and felt like her legs were about to give in.
She watched Wen Yang in front of her, panting as she tried to keep up with Yan Xinya. “Where’s Lily?”
“Oh, her? She was hiding under her blanket doing bad things last night—she’ll probably sleep until noon today.”
“……”
“Good thing it’s Sports Meeting day; she can hide in the dorm all she wants.”
With a nosy dog in the dorm, doing anything risky was bound to get discovered.
It was no wonder Lily had some social anxiety but got along well with Yan Xinya—after all, Lily had already seen through Yan Xinya’s frosty exterior.
“Xinya, what events are you participating in today?”
“Just a short sprint.”
Ning Chu nodded affirmatively. “Then I’ll come find you after.”
“Hmm?”
“I’m worried Wen Yang might get swarmed by fangirls during his events… just like last week in gym class.” She sighed in annoyance. “Lily probably won’t be much help—she’s too shy and, oh, did I mention she’s still asleep?”
Since the semester started, Ning Chu’s friend circle included just her four roommates, plus the wolf girl and the succubus.
Counting on the succubus was pointless, and neither Zhang Shaoqing nor Wang Jie was reliable at all.
The only trustworthy one was the wolf girl!
Yan Xinya’s expression turned serious, her brow furrowing as she mumbled, “That really is a hassle. If those bad women suddenly swarm over to Wen Yang, we won’t be able to do a thing.”
“Just do our best, I guess.”
After all, Wen Yang was going to be over the moon regardless.
Ning Chu pursed her lips, imagining a flock of girls fawning over Wen Yang, and deep down, she felt incredibly frustrated.
Why wasn’t she the main character? This sort of treatment should be hers!
“No worries, I’ll think of something~” Yan Xinya said with determination. “It’s all Wen Yang’s fault for being too handsome and attracting attention everywhere.”
After all, he was the main character!
Even without the protagonist halo, Wen Yang’s looks would make girls in the dorm area scream like crazy.
They finally made it to a shady spot on the edge of the sports field and got the tables and chairs arranged—task completed.
Wen Yang approached Ning Chu. “Want to grab breakfast?”
“Sure.”
He stared helplessly at Ning Chu’s worried expression. “You can relax; I won’t show off.”
“Let’s hope so…”
Why hadn’t she thought of this when signing up for the Sports Meeting?
She should have stopped Wen Yang right from the get-go!
“Wen Yang!”
Just as they were about to leave, a flashy cheerleader came bounding towards them.
This girl was decked out in a short skirt and crop top, her slim waist and long, exposed legs practically shouting for attention. She bounced up and down, holding pom-poms above her head, calling out to Wen Yang, “Good luck in the competition!”
Good grief! The Sports Meeting hadn’t even started, and he’d already roped in a cheerleader!
Wen Yang’s eyes turned into saucers, and he shyly returned her smile. “Thanks.”
Ning Chu shot a glare at the smug Lin Li and then turned to Wen Yang, scolding, “What are you thanking her for? She’s probably the one who drugged you!”
Wen Yang awkwardly scratched his nose.
“Your eyes turned into heart-shaped pupils! Is she really that pretty?”
“Eh, she’s okay…”
If only Ning Chu had worn that outfit too~
“Okay?!” Ning Chu’s voice shot up a notch.
Truth be told, she was undeniably stunning!
Wen Yang, painfully reluctant to meet her gaze, shook his head. “Not pretty at all.”
“Gross!”
