72. Who Looks Like a Good Person?
Ning Chu was visiting a KTV for the first time, at least in this world.
She curiously surveyed the not-so-big room, sitting awkwardly at the innermost seat, her eyes darting to the door, watching the comings and goings of guests and waitstaff in the corridor.
Though most KTVs were somewhat legit, and there weren’t many KTV appearances in the “Little Emperor” stories, the nature of such places increased the likelihood of running into drunken creeps.
“Relax!” Yan Xinya leaned in, “What song do you want to sing?”
“I can’t sing…”
“Then let’s duet later!”
“……”
It was her birthday, so Ning Chu didn’t want to oppose her.
Otherwise, after dinner, she would have firmly chosen to leave instead of coming to KTV.
She was utterly clueless about music. Singing-wise, all she had was emotion with absolutely no technique—definitely no room for improvement. Although her voice was clear and pleasant when she spoke, one could only describe her singing as music of the underworld.
After pondering for a moment, she replied, “How about ‘The Temptation of the Man’?”
“Huh? Never heard of it…”
“It’s a song by Phoenix Legend; I’ll take the male part.”
“……”
Yan Xinya paused, then dashed over to the karaoke machine to find “The Temptation of the Man” and started playing it. Suddenly, everything clicked.
That song had spread like wildfire back in the day, but she never knew the title.
As they listened, the Wolf Girl realized something was off and shot an eye-roll at Ning Chu: “So, how many words are in your part?”
“Isn’t it still singing?”
A moment later, Lin Li entered the room with a server pushing a cart piled high with various snacks and a few crates of alcohol.
Ning Chu winced at the sight of the bottles.
This was the world of Little Emperor Wen, and without Wen Yang’s protagonist aura nearby, she also happened to be a girl—a succubus, no less… She really didn’t want to get close to alcohol.
What if she got drunk? Who knew what kind of situation she might stumble into? Getting picked up by a corpse collector might be the best-case scenario.
“How about we skip the drinking?” Ning Chu suggested, “Getting drunk is such a hassle.”
Lily, sharing her concern, nodded in agreement.
“Xinya, what do you think?” Lin Li turned to Yan Xinya.
The Wolf Girl looked conflicted, furrowed her brows, and after a moment, declared, “Alright, you two don’t drink! Lin Li and I will have a little!”
“Deal!” Lin Li cheerily placed two crates of alcohol on the table.
“……”
Ning Chu let out a deep sigh, leaning back on the sofa.
Well, at least the girls present had no ties to Little Emperor Wen. And since she was a supporting character with still some plot relevance, the probability of creeps showing up had drastically increased.
Jail time~
Ning Chu and Lily weren’t exactly KTV aficionados, sitting side by side, munching on potato chips, scrolling through their phones, while Lin Li showcased her diva-level singing skills.
What a classic fox spirit—she excelled at singing, dancing, and seducing men.
“Did you get all mushy again while eating barbecue?”
A message from Lily popped up on her phone. Ning Chu froze, turned to glance at the expressionless face beside her, then lowered her head to reply: “No.”
Although this had been known many times over, she still felt a degree of embarrassment.
“Uh-huh~ I saw your face turning red back then.”
“It was hot while eating barbecue.”
Just an excuse to dodge the subject. Ning Chu received another message.
This one was from Wen Yang.
“I’m here.”
Along with the text, he sent a photo of a long-distance bus station, complaining to Ning Chu, “This lady on the bus wouldn’t stop trying to touch me.”
Don’t tell me—I knew that already.
Ning Chu sighed, picturing Wen Yang getting a taste of unpleasantness, feeling a pang of displeasure, her brows furrowing.
“I’m heading to the hospital first; we’ll talk later.”
Not knowing how long “later” would mean, she felt a sense of inexplicable anticipation.
She nudged Lily’s inquisitive little head away and stood up, asking, “Wanna go to the bathroom?”
Lily shook her head.
“Xinya? Come with me to the bathroom?”
“Sure!”
Finally, the Wolf Girl was reliable!
Ning Chu turned to Yan Xinya, but saw her wobbling slightly as she got up from the couch, swayed, then flopped back down with a grunt, immediately leaping back up.
Her tail had gotten squished under her, making her wince in pain, and her hazy brain suddenly perked up.
This girl really can’t handle her liquor!
Just a few beers and she’s like this?
No point in relying on her!
Ning Chu helplessly fished out the hypnosis spray from her pocket, bracing herself as she walked toward the door of the karaoke room.
“Wait for me!” Yan Xinya hurried to catch up, “Let’s go to the bathroom together!”
“……”
Originally, she called for Yan Xinya thinking that if they encountered a creep, the Wolf Girl could fight back.
But now, it felt more like having a liability, making a quick escape inconvenient.
Ning Chu pushed open the thick door of the room and peeked into the dimly lit corridor.
A couple of sparse waiters stood in the narrow corridor, and no other customers were visible. There were also claw machines set up around a few corners.
Her heart raced as she gulped, scanning every nook and cranny with caution.
However, Yan Xinya confidently strolled out of the room.
“Come on, hurry! I need to pee!”
Ning Chu had no choice but to follow the Wolf Girl’s lead, her grip tightening on the hypnosis spray in her pocket.
The bathroom wasn’t far, just around the corner.
But at the bathroom door, a burly guy was leaning against the entrance, cigarette in mouth, his shadowy, triangular eyes surveying them before he returned to nonchalantly playing with his phone.
Yikes!
This scene! That big guy! Clearly, something was off!
Sure enough, without the protagonist’s aura, all sorts of creeps were coming out of the woodwork!
Ning Chu felt uncomfortable under his gaze, quickly grabbing Yan Xinya’s sleeve and whispered, “Should we find another bathroom?”
“I’m about to wet my pants!”
“Not that! Just look at that guy…”
“Eh, it’s fine!”
Ning Chu couldn’t just stand idly by watching Yan Xinya offer herself up like that, so she hurriedly lowered her head, stiffened her legs, and accompanied the Wolf Girl, steeling herself as they approached that hulking figure.
Her scalp tingled, and the hand gripping the hypnosis spray trembled.
This is it! What now?!
That guy looked at least six feet tall, those biceps were massive—probably close to two hundred pounds.
Even if Yan Xinya had fighting skills, she wasn’t exactly in the same weight class.
The closer they got to the bathroom, the nearer they were to the giant, and Ning Chu’s breathing quickened. She kept her head down, placing all her hopes on the hypnosis spray.
“Excuse me.”
Ning Chu’s heart almost stopped. She watched Yan Xinya brazenly walk into the bathroom, quickly eyeing the large man who stepped aside, and hurried in after her.
Yan Xinya ducked into a stall, reassuring her through the door, “You’re too tense! Stop scaring yourself; you’ve been on edge since Wen Yang left.”
“He really doesn’t look like a good person…”
“Without Wen Yang, it seems no one looks like a good person to you!”
