Chapter 35: Not Going to Just Sit Around
“Friends? If you’re friends, why not just contact her directly? Or are you saying that as a friend, you don’t even have her contact info? If that’s the case, how can you call yourselves friends?”
The black-haired youth had some stinging words.
Even though Kong Yu Bai was very friendly in attitude and quite pretty, this didn’t sway him to be any less defiant.
Sure, he was just an ordinary person, and yes, he frequently interacted with Star Holders. But he’d never cowered before them.
He didn’t think they were all that much greater than him.
So if someone needed to be called out, he was the one to do it. Honest, direct conversation and efficiency were his guiding principles.
Even d*ath threats couldn’t change his mind.
Everyone around him thought he was cold and rude, but he felt he was being honest and to the point.
“Ahahaha~”
Kong Yu Bai didn’t get offended; instead, she looked over at Night Lan, who seemed to be zoning out again.
Speaking of which, Night Lan should have Qing Liao’s contact info, right? Why not reach out directly to Qing Liao?
If Night Lan didn’t have Qing Liao’s information, that would be bizarre.
Realizing this, Kong Yu Bai rose from her seat with a smile.
“Sorry, I guess I overlooked that.”
However, she lingered, her gaze serious.
“But… can you tell me what your relationship is with Qing Liao? I’m more or less considered her friend too, and if someone wanted to harm her, I wouldn’t stand idly by!”
The black-haired youth paused his glass-cleaning routine, meeting her eyes.
At least from his perspective, there was no deceit evident in her expression. This indicated she might well be telling the truth.
But despite this, he shook his head with refusal.
“Sorry, it’s confidential. I cannot answer you.”
Tensions flared.
The other two females in the shop were tense, seemingly concerned about a possible breakdown in the conversation.
If fights broke out within, it’d be bad for business and potentially reveal their location. Organizations like theirs typically attracted many enemies.
Why did such a well-disguised shop attract clueless Star Holders?
Perhaps they were just there for food?
“The dishes you guys ordered are here.”
A person emerged from the back door carrying Night Lan’s breakfast, breaking the tension.
Kong Yu Bai glanced disdainfully.
It was the same Star Holder cooking that she sensed— a thirty-something-year-old man with golden hair and green eyes, wearing an eye patch. He came off as mature and confident.
The dude set down the meal at Night Lan’s table.
“This is your breakfast. Please enjoy.”
“Uh… thanks.”
Night Lan nodded almost reflexively and turned her attention back towards things.
She didn’t know why.
Anytime her focus wandered to Night Lan, she felt dazed. It was more pronounced now.
Did it have something to do with distance?
Maybe.
Anyway, she pushed aside thoughts and started eating.
Seeing Night Lan start eating, Kong Yu Bai returned to her seat.
The monocle dude didn’t leave immediately, clearly aware of what was happening.
“You guys… are Star Holders, right?”
Night Lan froze slightly, then registered that he was indeed a Star Holder too.
Not panicking since she had Kong Yu Bai beside her.
“Uh-huh. That’s right.”
“Seeing you come from Huaxia, any insider info on the Free Country’s situation?”
“I’m a chicken,” she replied honestly. “We’ve barely been here ourselves.”
Truthfulness was best, especially on surface-level stuff.
This man seemed to understand, introducing himself.
“My name’s Claire, also a Star Holder. I freelance in info deals and errands. I have no allies. The guy at the front desk cleaning windows is Mo Xiao from Huaxia. He’s reserved but efficient.”
Kong Yu Bai smirked silently.
Claire pointed at a long-haired woman.
“She’s part of our group, raising funds for world travel. Her name’s He Li Xia, good at finding people.”
Then he gestured to a blonde girl with blue eyes.
“This is Noya, another member, currently focused on firepower.”
Night Lan nodded pensively.
But what was this got to do with her?
Claire continued, “Our little enterprise takes on contracts as long as you pay up. Regular patrons here are usually savvy Star Holders…”
Now Night Lan understood.
“Sorry, I just wanted to eat. Was I interrupting anything?”
“No, no, we’re a small restaurant, naturally get non-Star-Holders too. Just a bit unusual to see Star Holders only for food.”
“Just hungry, sorry,” Night Lan muttered, eating on.
The breakfast actually appealed to her palate, albeit not as tasty as Neko’s cooking.
“Can you get Qing Liao’s contact numbers?” Kong Yu Bai whispered.
“There might be,” she recalled vaguely. At a certain point, they exchanged contacts, though she was corrected by a Wish Machine later.
Still, she remembered faintly after being reminded.
“If so, why not ask her directly where she is? If she cares, she’ll respond,” Kong Yu Bai suggested.
“Yeah! She’s always been thoughtful.”
Night Lan suddenly realized how obvious it was.
Wait—she had Qing Liao’s number!
Just needing to contact her and find out where she lived!
But before joy could settle in, Kong Yu Bai added, “But… she seems to be in a bit of trouble now. Our organization has a contract concerning Qing Liao, whether it’s meant to harm or protect, I’m not sure. What do you think?”
“Hmm?”
Night Lan frowned. Things weren’t straightforward.
If the group took any kind of contract, dark jobs like assassinations were possible.
And Qing Liao was her friend.
If Qing Liao was targeted, Night Lan certainly wouldn’t stand idle!
“Uh?”
