582. Wife is the Best in the World!
“Hmm, so late… Working overtime on the weekend?! What about my checkup?”
Life after the wedding had turned dull and boring. Honestly just staying at home, playing games, and doing housework counted as exercise, and the days felt so leisurely it was making her itch all over.
When people get idle, anxiety kicks in uncontrollably.
Especially when your belly’s growing day by day, your figure’s changing daily, and those ugly, deep purple, bumpy stretch marks are showing up on your skin.
At the beginning of her pregnancy, Ning Chu couldn’t sit still and was always out and about, but now? She hesitated to even step out alone.
“Should I… go to the hospital by myself tomorrow?”
She murmured to her phone, but she couldn’t muster up the courage to step outside alone.
She looked so rough…
Ning Chu gazed at her reflection in the mirror—a disheveled, big-bellied lady—and let out a worried sigh.
Suddenly, her phone rang. She looked down to see a video call from Yan Xinya.
“Isn’t it around your due date, Xinya?”
She mumbled as she picked up her phone and waddled to the bedroom, sitting at her desk to answer the video.
“Why do you still have time for a video call?”
After a brief black screen, Yan Xinya’s excited face popped onto the phone.
She lay in her hospital bed, proudly raising her nose, her wolf ears perked up high: “I’ve given birth! It’s a boy!”
“So quick?!”
“Of course! Let me show you…”
The Wolf Girl turned the camera to the baby lying on the bed: “Isn’t he adorable? Plump and pale!”
“Um…” Honestly, Ning Chu thought newborns didn’t look that great, but after a moment of silence, her gaze softened towards the screen, and she declared emphatically, “Very cute!”
“He looked so ugly when he was born, all wrinkled. I thought I gave birth to a monster.”
Yan Xinya’s energetic demeanor was nothing like someone who just had a baby.
“Did you have a natural birth? Was it painful?”
“Yep! It was easy! The pain wasn’t that scary, really.”
Easy…
Ning Chu’s mouth twitched. She rarely heard childbirth described as easy. Even her sister-in-law, who could beat up her brother the day after giving birth, looked so weak coming out of delivery that she could barely speak.
“It felt like I pushed out a giant lump~”
“Your description is gross…”
Chatting with Yan Xinya eased Ning Chu’s anxiety. She propped her chin and smiled: “He looks a lot like you. Just look at that nose~”
“Yeah! He’s definitely going to be a handsome guy when he grows up! Now we just need you to have a daughter and arrange a childhood engagement.”
“Ew~ No way! Who knows if this kid will turn out to be a j*rk when he grows up.”
The corners of Wolf Girl’s mouth curled into a smile: “If he dares, I’ll break his legs.”
“…”
Even though Ning Chu had known Yan Xinya for so long without any violent tendencies, she was well aware of this girl’s combat prowess.
Normal adults were no match for her, and only her husband, a trained cop, could keep her in check.
“Hey, where’s your husband?”
Suddenly, the sparkle in Yan Xinya’s eyes dimmed: “Working overtime… He’s probably on his way here?”
She softly complained: “He hardly went with me to the hospital during the pregnancy, and he wasn’t even here to give birth…”
Ning Chu realized she had said something wrong and awkwardly changed the subject: “Have you picked a name for the baby?”
“Not yet! There are several great names~”
“Let me tell you, having a baby is a hassle. I’ve been in the hospital for a week…”
She quickly interrupted: “No! Don’t say that, or I’ll be scared!”
“What are you scared of~” Yan Xinya suddenly perked up, cheering, “My husband’s here! Gotta go! Bye?!”
“You better take care of yourself…”
The video call ended, and Ning Chu stared blankly at the screen, halfway through her sentence.
She grumbled, placing her phone face down on the desk: “Got a man and forgot about the best friend; I’m just a stand-in…”
Suddenly, the image of Yan Xinya’s baby flashed through her mind. She instinctively rubbed her belly, feeling the life inside her moving around.
Her baby was quite active, and she could predict that the child born in the future would likely be lively and cheerful.
Sitting at her computer, Ning Chu found herself playing less and less, fearing her teammates would drive her up the wall. Most of her entertainment now consisted of watching dramas.
After finishing two episodes, the sound of the door opening came from the living room.
She quickly got up and dashed out of the bedroom.
“Don’t run too fast; be careful.”
Even though Wen Yang hadn’t seen his wife yet, he could easily imagine her anxious demeanor from the hurried footsteps he heard.
Turning a corner and reaching the front door, Ning Chu finally stopped, looking at her husband with a heartbroken expression.
“Why are you working overtime again?”
“Recently, there’s a busy project at the company. I don’t want to work late either…” Wen Yang took off his shoes, unable to wait for slippers, and stepped in, trying to soothe Ning Chu. “It’ll all ease up soon. How about I have mom take you to the hospital tomorrow?”
However, the moment he touched her arm, she gently shrugged him off.
He froze for a second, then looked up to see her eyes filling with tears, her formerly sad expression now transformed into a pitiful one.
“Fine, I’ll take half a day off tomorrow to go with you.”
Wen Yang quickly conceded, feeling panicked. Other than in bed, he rarely saw Ning Chu cry, and now he was in a complete fluster.
Ever since she got pregnant, her emotions had been as unpredictable as the weather.
“Tsk!”
“What did mom make for dinner?”
He stubbornly moved closer, trying to be charming as he helped massage her neck and loosen her muscles: “Want me to order some barbecue? Just a little, a bite or two to satisfy your cravings?”
“You just want it for yourself, right?”
“Yeah, I do want some!”
Ning Chu snorted in discontent, stepping on Wen Yang’s foot: “Put on some shoes! You’re leaving footprints all over the floor!”
“Do less housework, or let Mom do it. I can help when I get back in the evening.”
“Pregnant women need to exercise too, okay? I don’t like going out now, but doing housework helps me move around.”
Wen Yang unconditionally supported his wife’s point of view: “Right! Just move a bit. If you get tired, rest. Don’t push yourself.”
Seeing her expression lifting from gloomy to bright, he finally relaxed, pulling Ning Chu to sit on the sofa and opening the takeout app on his phone: “Pick whatever you want. It’s on me.”
“Isn’t it all my money anyway…” Ning Chu took the phone and said, “Xinya just had her baby—a boy, quite good-looking. He’ll probably be a handsome guy when he grows up.”
“That was quick? Any photos?”
“She’ll probably post on social media shortly. I saw it on video.”
Her eyebrows furrowed as she looked at Wen Yang’s hand on her thigh and pushed it away: “Don’t touch me.”
“Still mad?”
Ning Chu instinctively wrapped her coat tighter and shifted her legs away to avoid touching Wen Yang: “No… I just feel so ugly right now.”
“How can that be?” Wen Yang was both amused and exasperated.
“I’ve gained so much weight, and there are stretch marks. My hands and feet are a bit swollen…”
“My wife is the most beautiful woman in the world, okay?”
