312. The Wronged Lilith

Now, she could barely manage to run one and a half laps, around six hundred meters, before her legs turned to jelly and she took a nosedive!
What an embarrassing scene!
Pain and humiliation washed over her, tears welled in her eyes, but she couldn’t cry in public—so she bit her lip, looking all pitiful while propping herself up with her hands.
She flipped over and plopped down on the track, casting a gloomy look at her scraped palms, elbows, and knees, which made her feel even more frustrated. Then she glared at Lilith not far away.
If it weren’t for this troublemaker, her stamina wouldn’t be so terrible!
Meanwhile, Lin Kexin, who was running beside Lin Nan, finally realized what had happened and hurriedly jogged back to Lin Nan’s side, squatting down looking worried.
But before she could even ask what was up, a figure unexpectedly sprang out of nowhere. Lin Nan looked up—and lo and behold, it was Chen Yao, who had just been lounging hundreds of meters away!
“Are you okay? Does it hurt? I’ll take you to see the school doctor!”
His face was a mix of worry as he examined Lin Nan’s scraped knee and palm: “Can you walk? I can carry you!”
Being cared for was nice, but the moment she heard “carry,” Lin Nan’s already pitiful face dropped with horror as she shook her head vigorously.
Falling while running was embarrassing enough, but being carried off in front of everyone to see a doctor? Talk about humiliation levels skyrocketing!
“It’s fine, really, it’s just a scrape.” Lin Nan forced a smile to reassure Chen Yao, spreading her arms for inspection. “See? Hardly any bl**d!”
Chen Yao frowned, “No fractures or anything, right?”
“Nope.”
Lin Nan shook her head with a serious face, kicking her legs and stretching her arms, acting like it was no big deal.
“Seriously, you’re like a paper doll!” Chen Yao lifted her off the track, brushing off imaginary dirt from her backside, completely oblivious to how increasingly flustered Lin Nan became.
“I remember when we were in middle school, you fell and broke a bone! I was so scared of messing with you after that!”
Back in middle school during National Day, when they were just kids, Lin Nan and Chen Yao were roughhousing on the streets when Lin Nan toyed with the laws of gravity, landed b*tt-first, and her left hand bent like an S.
But Lin Nan never told her parents the truth, saying she just tripped and leaving Chen Yao off the hook.
The two exchanged a few murmurs, while nearby Li Xinyi saw them being all lovey-dovey and felt a little heartbroken, so she ran off to tell the PE teacher that Lin Nan was doing just fine.
Seeing Lin Nan wasn’t seriously hurt and still casting daggers at Lilith, Chen Yao furrowed his brow and glared at Lilith too.
“What was up with you tripping her while she was running?” He stormed over to Lilith, ready to demand justice for Lin Nan.
He’d been chatting with friends hundreds of meters away when he looked up to see Lin Nan fall and spotted Lilith’s leg sticking out, primed for mischief, so in his eyes, Lin Nan basically got taken out by this fiend!
“????” Lilith looked completely bewildered.
“Exactly! That’s super dangerous!” Li Na chimed in, arms crossed, nodding fervently. “You were always chill when we were kids, but now, you’re like a total troublemaker!”
Lilith bared her teeth and growled, “What do I care?! It’s not my fault she fell—she did that all on her own!”
“Wow, so you’re lying now!” Li Na was enjoying the moment, “You never used to lie as a kid; what’s changed?”
Now that Lilith had lost her powers, this world was giving her a chance to learn some humility before she regained her witchy prowess.
I’m just being so nice to Lilith.
Earth feels like a reality show for Lilith!
She was almost touched by it all.
“Well, at least Lin Nan’s fine, so just apologize,” Chen Yao said, darkly frowning. Suddenly he felt a tug on his shirt and glanced down to see Lin Nan shaking her head at him.
He patted her head for comfort: “It’s okay, just let her apologize.”
“Uh, that’s not—”
Before Lin Nan could finish her defense, Lilith let out a huffy noise and turned away.
Just wait until I get my magic back! Everyone’s going to pay, tentacles and all!
Seeing Lilith completely unapologetic and downright defiant made Chen Yao furious.
I CAN’T WITH THIS CRABBY TEMPER!
“Forget it, forget it.” Lin Nan quickly interjected, “It’s got nothing to do with her; I tripped myself.”
Chen Yao glanced at Lin Nan’s tear-filled eyes, took a deep breath, but only got more frustrated, not knowing how to vent; he finally sighed, “You’ve got to toughen up, or you’ll keep being a punching bag.”
“Right?” Li Na added, nodding vigorously. She noticed Lilith walking away and hurried to chase after her.
Lin Nan was utterly confused. This time, she really did trip over her own feet.
Why were they all blaming Lilith?
Yeah, yeah, it’s all Lilith’s fault!
“Let’s go to the school nurse and get some ointment on that.” Chen Yao helped Lin Nan, worried that she might fall again.
Her knee was just scraped, and while it hurt, it wasn’t enough for her to need help walking. However, with Chen Yao already there, she felt like it would be rude to push him away.
As they walked, Lin Nan began defending Lilith.
“I really just tripped because my legs got tired. She didn’t even trip me.” Lin Nan had a serious look, “She stretched out her leg, sure, but I was still over a meter away when I fell, okay?”
“Sure, sure.” Chen Yao nodded, half-heartedly, his gaze anxiously locked on Lin Nan’s leg like it was a fragile statue.
Realizing Chen Yao wasn’t even listening to her, Lin Nan sighed and switched topics: “I didn’t score anything this time; I won’t have to run again, right?”
“If it were me, I’d just give you the score, but Lin Kexin is in charge of the girls’ physical assessment.” Chen Yao shrugged, “If she doesn’t give you a score, you’ll be running next time.”
“Then I’ll just ask her online for a passing score later.” Lin Nan frowned, worried if Lin Kexin would even help her cheat after only knowing each other for a few days.
“When you have some free time, you really should exercise more. You can’t even finish a lap without collapsing; your health is really poor. This sort of thing is bound to happen.”
As they strolled through the school, Chen Yao supported Lin Nan while lecturing her, “How about I bring you running every other night from now on?”
But I have magic! I don’t need to run!
Lin Nan turned him down, “That sounds exhausting…”
“I’ll suffer with you.”
She gave a little smirk, “But how far can you run?”
“More than you think. Remember? I ran a marathon in high school. No prize, but I finished it.”
So by the time I’m about to drop dead, you’ll still be warming up?
