518. Bungee Jumping Preparation [9/40]
==============================
This was Lin Nan’s first ride on a cable car.
A mix of excitement and a hint of fear bubbled up inside her as, after paying for the ride, she sat in what looked like a mini cabin with Chen Yao.
This cable car was basically a box with huge windows on all sides, and there were two seats inside.
Thanks to her previous experience on the Ferris wheel, Lin Nan’s fear of heights now only revolved around the possibility of falling. Plus, the bottom of the cable car wasn’t transparent; looking down just revealed blue metal plates. As long as she didn’t lean against the glass like a curious puppy, her fear of heights didn’t flare up.
Inside their “cabin,” Lin Nan, Chen Yao, Tu Junhui, and Xiong Da were all squeezed in together. She gripped the handrail tightly and stared down at the blue floor, feeling somewhat reassured.
“The counselor is such an idiot! He could have just let us take the cable car up, but instead, we walked for over two hours yesterday,” Tu Junhui grumbled.
“Just trying to save money,” Chen Yao shrugged, glancing sideways at the petite Lin Nan and teasing, “Are you scared of the cable car too?”
“Not really.”
Suddenly, the cable car jolted, swaying slightly as it slowly pulled away from the platform.
Lin Nan instinctively tightened her grip on the handrail, clenched her teeth, and kept her head down, too terrified to look around.
Just the thought of being hundreds of meters high made her heart race uncontrollably.
Chen Yao was checking out the bungee jumping project at this scenic spot when his eyes lit up with excitement. He turned to Lin Nan with a big smile, “Looks like they have tandem jumps too! Want to jump together?”
“Isn’t Lin Nan afraid of heights?” Xiong Da shifted his gaze from the view outside back to Lin Nan. “Is she really going?”
“What? Lin Nan is scared of heights? How did I not know this?” Tu Junhui exclaimed, utterly surprised.
Lin Nan nodded vigorously, her expression determined despite her weak voice, “I’ll go! I’ll jump with you!”
If she was jumping with Chen Yao, at least she’d feel a tad safer, right?
Curiosity got the better of her, and she peeked out the cable car window.
Surprisingly, she didn’t feel much fear since she was firmly grounded, and the cable car had stabilized after the initial launch.
Last time on the Ferris wheel, the transparent floor really did a number on her nerves, not to mention the swaying!
The mountain views outside were stunning, but unfortunately, Lin Nan was no expert in poetic descriptions. She found herself struggling to articulate the beauty of the vibrant trees and blue sky filling her view.
“Whoa! This scenery is amazing! Look over there, a massive waterfall!” Tu Junhui exclaimed, practically glued to the window.
This guy must have failed Chinese class every time in high school.
Chen Yao, relaxed and at ease, propped his leg up and pulled out a bag of chips, offering them to Lin Nan. She took a quick glance and recoiled, shaking her head, “Not cucumber flavor!”
“But yesterday in the car, you said it was tasty!” Chen Yao replied, surprised. He thought the chips would impress Lin Nan and make her appreciate his thoughtfulness.
“That was someone else’s! I had to pretend to like it!”
Tu Junhui snatched the bag of chips away, “If you don’t want it, I’ll take it! Cucumber flavor is the best!”
After munching on snacks for about half an hour in the cable car, Lin Nan finally started feeling more grounded.
The bungee jumping area was located by a massive lake, fully decked out with all kinds of restaurants and snacks. However, they were among the first batch of tourists because it was still early in the day.
Lin Nan couldn’t help but stare up at the bungee platform, probably fifty or sixty meters high, and her legs started turning to jelly.
Just then, a tourist stood on the bungee platform. From a distance, all they saw was a dark figure. Moments later, it looked like the instructor pushed the person down, and the terrified scream echoed throughout the lake as the guest plummeted in free fall.
“That looks kinda scary,” Lin Nan’s heart skipped a beat.
“Are you still going to try?” Chen Yao looked at her with an amused expression, doubting Lin Nan would have the guts for such an extreme sport.
“Of course! Why wouldn’t I?” Lin Nan straightened her back, sounding resolute. “If you’re going, I can’t back out!”
Though that agonizing scream still echoed in her ears, making her feel a little wobbly inside.
Hearing the bl**d-curdling scream made Lin Nan’s legs feel a bit weak, and her heart raced faster.
“Let’s go! Everyone who wants to bungee jump, follow me!” Tu Junhui shouted, brimming with excitement as he led the group toward the bungee tower. “Let’s get this done so we can head back!”
Lin Kexin hurried to keep up with him. The two seemed to treat bungee jumping like a long jump, with no fear visible on their faces—just pure excitement.
Meanwhile, most of the others hesitated, and even Chen Yao showed signs of nervousness.
When they arrived at the bungee tower, those wanting to participate began paying up. But when Tu Junhui stepped onto the scale, the staff flat-out rejected him without hesitation.
“Two hundred twenty-five pounds? You’re over the limit. Can’t jump.”
“What?!”
“Only those under two hundred and above ninety pounds are allowed.” The staff pointed at the bungee regulations posted on the wall.
Tu Junhui stood there, dumbfounded. His face darkened, and his lips quivered, but no words came out as he trudged aside in defeat.
“I’m definitely losing weight when I get back! d*mn it!”
Lin Nan couldn’t help but take a jab, “How many times have you said that? I haven’t seen you stick to it longer than a week.”
Back when Lin Nan tried to jog to boost her stamina, Tu Junhui had joined in—but despite his hefty physique, he was surprisingly athletic. However, he never could stick to the routine.
Without magic, this guy probably wouldn’t lose a pound unless he faced some serious life crisis.
She hopped onto the scale behind him. One hundred two pounds—an impressively standard weight for her height.
Stepping off the scale, she couldn’t resist poking further fun at Tu Junhui, building her happiness on his misery, “I’ve been snacking every night, and I don’t know why I can’t seem to gain weight. It’s so annoying~”
“Get lost!”
Next was Chen Yao, who weighed in at one hundred forty pounds. At nearly six feet tall, he was only a bit on the chubby side.
It seemed he’d gained about ten pounds, and a lack of exercise during the pandemic had turned quite a bit of muscle into flab. He looked bulkier than last semester.
Even including Lin Nan and Chen Yao, there were only five students willing to bungee jump. Lin Kexin was about Lin Nan’s height but weighed under a hundred.
No wonder people say those under a hundred either have no chest or are short!
Lin Nan peeked at Lin Kexin’s chest, and yeah, it was flatter than hers.
Then came tests for bl**d pressure and various health checks to ensure participants had no hypertension or other medical issues. The park was anxious about anyone getting hurt, so the checks were strict—just a slight bl**d pressure spike would keep someone off the tower.
Big Dog also opted to join, and the last guy wasn’t someone she knew well. But she’d seen him around, and he was usually pretty lively in class, often visiting Lin Nan’s dorm last semester.
After all the checks were done, Lin Nan climbed the steps of the bungee tower, her legs shaking like jelly and her palms sweating.
Chen Yao was astonished—he couldn’t believe his timid girlfriend was actually going to bungee jump.
“Don’t go up there and then regret it,” he warned kindly.
“Money’s been paid…”
Hearing that, Chen Yao realized just how determined Lin Nan was.
