Chapter 6: One Last Act of Willfulness
“Oh dear, your generation really can’t keep up~”
After stretching her delicate arms, Nia leisurely arched her back, her soft pointed ears twitching slightly.
Behind her, those annoying drunks who had just tried to chat her up were now beaten to a pulp, tossed aside like trash.
Who would’ve thought that the illustrious daughter of the Verdant Council, Nia Molly with her Forest Elf lineage, would be so bored that she’d bait trouble just for kicks?
That’s right, Nia was not only outgoing, her hobbies were also far from those of your typical elven girl.
Instead of moon-gazing or dancing, she preferred moonlighting as an Adventurer.
Honestly, even other Adventurers were puzzled about why a noble elven girl would have such interests.
But they didn’t care; what Adventurer wouldn’t want a sweet-looking, gorgeous elf girl who could fight on their side?
Thus, all the Adventurers here became Nia’s loyal little brothers.
“Serves you right for trying to hit on the boss!” “As expected of our Miss Windshadow!” “Come on, bet on whether the fight finishes in under three minutes!”
With cheers and laughter, the guild was filled with a lively atmosphere.
Usually, Nia would jump in, raising her cup of honey water and joining the fun, but today, she merely ruffled her hair and sat back in a corner, looking a bit despondent.
“Tired of these noisy fools already? If you’re bored, just go home,” teased Natasha, the nearby barmaid, munching on a twig.
Natasha had blue tattoos all over her exposed arms and, being a descendant of elves, she came off as rebellious.
However, having been through it herself, Natasha knew the Adventurer life wasn’t all that glamorous—at least not compared to the comfortable life of a noble.
But Nia just stuck her tongue out at her, “No way, I’d get nagged to death by my mom if I went home.”
“Still worrying about that arranged marriage?”
“Of course…”
Nia got along easily with most, but Natasha was one of the few she could open up to.
“Pfft, so you really like girls?” Natasha burst into laughter, nearly spitting out her twig.
At those words, Nia slammed her hands on the table, exasperated: “Like them? No way!”
“Girls are cute, sure, but that doesn’t mean I wanna date them! I just don’t get what that old woman is thinking, trying to set me up with my cousins! What’s wrong with her?!”
Thinking about her mother’s serious expression made Nia feel like crying, slumping over the bar like a fish out of water.
“It’s over, it’s all over! My wonderful youthful days are ending way too fast!”
“Is it really that bad? Marriage isn’t such a bad deal,” Natasha said casually.
“Ew!”
Nia jumped up in shock, protectively covering her chest, looking at her with wide, terrified eyes.
“No, I meant marrying a man. Is that so wrong?” Natasha raised an eyebrow, “You really planning to stay single forever?”
“Marriage isn’t the issue…” Nia scratched her cheek, staring out the window.
Fireflies danced in the starry sky above the forest, which should have been a magical night. But the unchanging scenery over the years had already bored her to tears.
“Natasha, I told you before, I want to go on an adventure.”
“Like how you did when you were young, traveling the world, free and unhindered!”
Nia smiled, dimples appearing on her charming face.
Her emerald eyes no longer reflected a dull night sky but instead conjured images of a world filled with endless adventures: swords and blood, light and dark, farewells and reunions, freedom and glory.
“Just once would be enough; I want to see the outside world.”
Nia didn’t oppose marriage; she just didn’t want to be locked away in the Verdant Council like a traditional elven woman.
For elven descendants, unless they married outsiders, tradition demanded that married women stick to their homes.
Just like Nia’s mother, Janthea, who had to follow that tradition despite her adventurous past.
Seeing the longing in Nia’s eyes, Natasha’s expression dimmed.
“The outside world isn’t as good as you think. The life of an Adventurer isn’t as simple as you imagine.”
“Roughing it in the wild, facing beasts and bandits, there are dangers you can’t even begin to comprehend. And even if you’re lucky enough to survive, when the glory fades with time, all that’s left for you is…”
Natasha’s words trailed off as she noticed Nia turned her head, her eyes glinting with mischief.
Those emerald eyes seemed to have a keen insight that left Natasha momentarily speechless.
“Just an illusion? Really?” Nia smiled, lifting her finger to her lips: “But I see someone smiling sweetly every time they reminisce about the past~”
“I don’t!” Natasha replied, her cheeks turning red, feeling quite embarrassed.
“Hey, what’s the rush? I never said it was you!”
“You…”
If only Nia was a clueless and cheerful airhead, it’d be easier, but her sharp wit made it tough to deal with her.
After the laughter, Nia adopted a more serious look.
The girl stared intently at Natasha, placing her hand over her heart, and softly said, “I know adventures aren’t simple, and I know Mom’s just looking out for me. I don’t actually plan to stay single for life and cut off this lineage.”
“But even just once, I just want to go out and see.”
Even the most conservative elven descendants aren’t completely closed off; many of her peers had already left the Verdant Council.
Yet Nia couldn’t understand why her mother never allowed her to go outside.
Even if it was just once.
Nia wouldn’t mind being a caged bird forever, but before that, she just wanted to taste the feeling of flying free.
Under Nia’s resolute gaze, Natasha fell silent for a long moment, finally managing to utter a weak reply.
“Miss Nia, your mother is doing this for your own good.”
“…I know.” The girl’s smile remained unchanged.
Then, she got up and turned away on her own.
Worry filled Natasha as she watched Nia’s solitary retreating figure.
“Please don’t do anything foolish!”
“Foolish? Like how you ran away to go on adventures when you were young?”
“Exactly! You and I are not the same. You’re the daughter of the Verdant Council, a pure-blooded elven lady. If you pulled something like that, the whole Verdant Council would go crazy!”
Just as Natasha’s anxiety peaked, Nia suddenly turned her head back, a faint smile gracing her face as she waved her hand cheerfully.
“Don’t worry, I’ll think about the marriage thing.”
Relieved by the girl’s promise, Natasha finally let out a breath.
However, as Nia wove through the joyful, bustling crowd, she looked up at the night sky, her eyes sparkling with unshakeable determination.
Nia smiled, whispering softly like a gentle breeze.
“So, let me be a little willful just this once.”
