Chapter 72: The Evil Ghost
Nia’s lips quivered but then tightly pressed together. Just as she was about to speak, she thought of Alice, the princess of the Lionheart Kingdom.
In the end, her lips fell slack as usual.
Actually, she already had the answer in her heart.
Besides, even without them, she’d eventually have to return to the Verdant Assembly.
A brief pause came from beyond the tent, and then a soft and melodious giggle floated over, like a nightingale’s gentle song.
“I really don’t understand love.”
“Actually, this is my first adventure with companions.”
“I used to be alone, bound by all sorts of things, never really free. I always thought it would be nice to go on adventures with someone—traveling, exploring, treasure hunting, and having thrilling battles…”
Even though Nia’s words were quite vague, Roy could still relate deeply.
In his past life, Roy was buried under heavy academic pressure, and after graduating, he was worn out by a 996 work schedule. Everything he wanted to do and all his dreams were shackled by life’s constraints, gradually fading away.
He didn’t hate the leisurely time spent with Nia.
“So, being here like this, I’m already satisfied.”
Even though he had his back to her and couldn’t see Nia’s expression, Roy could imagine the warm smile on her face as she said those words.
The air gradually fell silent, and when he turned back, the girl had her head drooped, eyes closed, drifting into sleep. The corners of her mouth curled up slightly, forming a shallow dimple that showed she was lost in sweet dreams.
A whole day of adventuring wasn’t exactly easy; even Roy felt a bit tired, so it was normal for Nia to fall asleep.
Still claiming to not be tired? Yeah right, you’re obviously worn out!
With no other choice, Roy gently propped her up and carefully ushered her into the tent.
In the quiet dark, as he looked at the girl’s sweet sleeping face, a shadow of gloom crossed Roy’s expression.
If possible, he genuinely wished today’s adventure would just end here.
However, with the threat of the Fate Node still looming, it was far from the time to let his guard down.
The scene of Nia covered in injuries, lying in a pool of blood from the original work flashed through his mind again, and Roy couldn’t help but clench his fists.
The radiant elf girl shouldn’t be tainted by such colors. The adventure she’s content with should end on a perfect note.
Roy tucked the loose blanket back around her, gave her one last glance, and resolutely stepped out of the tent.
When he reappeared, he was already dressed in the Sword Demon gear, standing outside Reid’s tent.
Reid was yawning and about to dive into the tent when he suddenly saw a dark shadow appear right in front of him, nearly taking his breath away.
Holy crap, this guy really followed me!
He couldn’t have overheard me bragging just now, right?!
“Sword Demon? Didn’t you say you’d hide your identity and evaluate things secretly?” Reid stuttered, a bit anxious now.
Come on, we’ve cooperated a few times as ‘good brothers,’ so why so tense? Roy internally rolled his eyes but maintained the aloof expert persona, speaking in a low, gravelly voice, “The situation has changed.”
“Is there… a danger?” Reid’s expression suddenly turned serious at that.
Adventurers might get completely plastered, but they wouldn’t lower their guard, especially not during a mission when Reid and his crew were just having a few drinks while keeping things in check.
“May I ask what kind of danger? Did you foresee something, Sword Demon?”
Roy didn’t even know the exact source of danger; he just wanted to remind Reid not to relax.
Just as he was preparing to throw out some vague nonsense, he noticed a small adventurer wandering over.
“Boss, the brother on lookout, Draven, should have switched places by now. Have you seen him?”
“Get lost, can’t you see I’m talking with…?!”
Halfway through, Reid suddenly changed his expression, becoming serious as he threw an inquiring look at Sword Demon.
Roy nodded slightly.
“Jack, wake the brothers up! Then get a few people to check the high ground…”
“No. You all hold the camp.”
Roy interrupted Reid’s orders, looking towards the northern vantage point with a glint in his eyes.
That was in the direction near Nia.
“North is enough with me around.”
————————
The northern side of the castle ruins was relatively intact, with a tower that had collapsed halfway.
From here, most of the castle ruins were within sight. The adventurers had set up personnel on guard here to prevent beasts or robbers from sneaking in at night.
However, this time the opponents were far from dumb beasts and weren’t mere bandits swinging their swords randomly.
The Draven brothers, who were responsible for defense, and the other two adventurers who came to relieve them, now had their throats slit, discarded like trash.
The thieves were all masters of stealth, and their vice-captain, Angus, was one of the best among them.
Nighttime was when humans were most exhausted and likely to make mistakes. Even that girl who had a strong ability to sense enemies was clearly asleep now.
The thieves were waiting for this very moment.
Angus’s mission was to lead a few elite members, sneak past the adventurers’ watch, and launch a surprise attack on the camp from the north to disrupt the adventurers’ attention. Meanwhile, their captain Andy would lead the main force to attack from the south.
This mission was meant to be discreet, leaving no survivors; only by sandwiching the adventurers from both sides could they annihilate them completely.
However, before the mission officially began, Angus had his own private matters to attend to.
He scanned the area with his binoculars, and soon found the tent tucked away in the corner.
It was clear the adventurers had placed the two kids there for protection, specifically in the depths of the castle ruins.
But to Angus, this was an opportunity.
“Bitch, I found you!”
The curly-haired thief licked his lips in excitement.
Just the thought of that pure face and the attractive figure hidden under the robe lit a fire in Angus’s belly, but there was nothing left of a man where it mattered, only endless emptiness and a lingering pain, which filled Angus with a rage.
He had to make that damn bitch pay!
Another thief uneasily reminded him, “Vice-captain, didn’t the captain tell us to complete the mission first, then deal with that bitch?”
“What’s to be afraid of?! We can kill that bitch first anyway. These adventurers are as dumb as pigs; they wouldn’t even notice if we held a knife to their throats!” Angus sneered, casting a disdainful glance at the corpses in the corner.
“And besides, if in the chaos we accidentally kill that bitch, you guys won’t get to have your fun!”
Recalling Nia’s appearance and figure, several thieves involuntarily gulped down saliva, laughing lewdly.
Seeing everyone looking tempted, Angus also felt delighted and turned back to confirm the tent one last time.
“We’ll sneak over in a bit; first, take out her boyfriend to shut her up, then have some fun with her in front of him! When you’re all done, I’ll sell her off to the red-light district for everyone to have their way with!”
“Hehe, something like that could sell for a pretty penny! Enough for me to find a mage to get a new one! Before that, just take good care of her for me…”
Then, Angus suddenly shut his mouth. Because the lewd laughter around him had vanished, the air had grown eerily silent.
As a rank 9 Extraordinary Being and a seasoned thief with over ten years on the streets, Angus instinctively felt a chill creeping up his back.
He drew a dagger in a flash, spinning around to stab, but a hand like an iron claw seized him fiercely, rendering him powerless.
Amidst a strong smell of blood, Angus finally saw what was happening.
It was a figure shrouded in black mist, looking like an evil ghost!
