Chapter 86: A Final Farewell
Here we go again.
Just like when he was playing around with Alice and the others earlier, Nia’s smile always gave Roy this inexplicable sense of unease.
But before he could ask, Nia shifted back to her usual self, giggling away.
“Well, it’s time to head back.”
“Ah, since this is a rare opportunity, do you want to hold hands? Once we go back, there won’t be another chance!”
As she said, this really was the last time.
“As long as you’re happy.”
With a resigned sigh, Roy intertwined his hand with her delicate one, so soft it felt like flower petals.
Such a simple action made Nia squint her eyes with joy.
The two walked in silence, cherishing the summer night, starlight, gentle breeze, chirping cicadas, each other’s breaths, the warmth in their palms, and what might be their last stroll side by side.
Under the faint starlight, the quiet forest path seemed endless; their time together felt like it would stretch on forever.
Too bad they eventually reached the end, returning to the little cabin in the woods.
Before Roy could make a move, Nia’s hand slipped away like a gust of wind.
The others, busy cleaning up the dining table, noticed the returning pair and rushed over.
Jeni and Amy eagerly pulled Nia aside, whispering with excitement, practically bursting with questions about what just happened.
“Tell me you were successful!” “What did Roy say?!”
“Uh, actually, I didn’t say anything…”
“What?! *2”
The two nearly fainted on the spot.
At this point, not saying anything meant there would be no more chances?!
Before they could press her further, Nia waved her hand, a relieved smile on her face. “It’s okay, this is enough for now.”
“Besides, we’re all leaving soon. Even if I said something, what would it change? Furthermore…”
Nia’s gaze drifted past the two, landing on the blonde girl in the distance.
Moreover, someone would be there to walk alongside Roy. It’s probably better for someone like her to leave early.
Meanwhile, Alice was sneakily glancing at the boy in the distance, her light blue eyes reflecting profound confusion.
Were they really holding hands just now?
Though she was reluctant to part with Nia, this meant she could have some alone time with her master. She should be at least a little happy about that.
But when she caught sight of the dark-haired boy looking a bit dejected, his gaze lingering on Nia, Alice felt an uncomfortable lump in her chest, making it hard to breathe.
This wasn’t the outcome she wanted.
Regardless, with the farewell banquet wrapping up completely, it was time for them to part ways.
The next day, Roy absently went through his classes. Once they ended, he rushed to pick up Alice after school, wanting to see Nia one last time.
Even if they had to say goodbye, he wanted to be with her until the very last moment before leaving Academy City.
However, when Roy hurried to Nia’s classroom, he learned from Alice that Nia had already left.
The classroom buzzed louder than usual, as if it was a festival. Everyone was excitedly discussing Nia’s identity.
“Wasn’t the person who picked up Nia just now an elf? Does that mean she’s of elf descent?”
“That’s not just any elf; that’s a member of the Emerald Rangers! In the kingdom, that’s equivalent to royal guards!”
“No way, could Nia be a big deal in the Emerald Council?!”
Even in Academy City, which was full of various races, elf descendants were quite rare, and the Emerald Council was known to be very secretive, cloaked in mystery to outsiders.
Even among students used to seeing nobles from all over, curiosity about the girl taken away by the Emerald Rangers was inevitable.
It had been the same in the original story, when Nia left with the suddenly appearing ranger, igniting a lot of speculation among clueless students.
Staring at Nia’s empty desk that had once belonged to her, the chatter around Roy suddenly became unbearable.
He gradually realized that Nia was really gone.
“Master?”
The worried little maid’s inquiry pulled Roy back from his daze, and he flashed her a reassuring smile.
“It’s nothing. Let’s head home.”
“Got it.”
However, even when he got home, Roy couldn’t calm his thoughts.
Ever since their bond grew closer, Nia had practically been coming over for dinner every day.
At those times, Alice would prepare the meal.
The carefree elf girl would casually sprawl on the couch, making herself at home, munching on snacks, reading novels, and swinging her chubby feet clad in white stockings, treating the place like her own.
Just thinking about it made Roy involuntarily smile wryly.
Lying back in the middle of the couch, for the first time, he realized just how spacious their sofa was.
When Nia wasn’t around, he usually took the opportunity during Alice’s cooking to sip some tea or play games to kill time.
But now, those few short minutes left him feeling utterly lost.
“Master, dinner’s ready.”
Finally, the little maid’s call broke the silence and dinner officially started, but staring at the empty spot across the table, Roy felt like he had lost his appetite.
Speaking of which, Nia was really addicted to Alice’s cooking. He wondered if she would get used to eating once she got back home…
“Master, is the food unappetizing?”
“Ah? No, no!”
Roy snapped back to reality, noticing Alice’s worried gaze and mentally cursed himself for being so distracted.
Wasn’t he supposed to have it figured out already?
Nia going back to the Emerald Council meant their fates would no longer intertwine, so no more triggering those ‘inverse fate’ events. It was good for both of their safety.
Moreover, it was just a temporary separation; in the future, he could definitely go visit her at the Emerald Council.
With that in mind, Roy perked up, forcing a bright smile to ease Alice’s worries.
“Don’t worry; Alice’s cooking is as delicious as ever.”
With that, he put a forkful of food in his mouth to prove his point.
Then, under Alice’s stunned gaze, he took a big bite of the empty fork.
Clearly, his teeth hadn’t been fortified by the Steel and Iron Bones; the pain from that single bite nearly brought tears to his eyes.
“Master!”
“Ah, no, it’s fine. Just a little accident…”
Roy covered his face, shaking his head and forcing out a smile that looked worse than crying.
Alice didn’t want to interfere with Roy’s choices, but at this point, she couldn’t just ignore things anymore.
She sighed softly and spoke the truth hidden in Roy’s heart: “Master, you really do miss Nia, don’t you?”
“No, I just…”
He started to speak but abruptly stopped.
Those light blue eyes were like a clear mirror, full of concern and worry, revealing an understanding of everything. Under Alice’s gaze, Roy stayed silent for a long time but ultimately sighed softly.
“Can’t believe it; just one day apart, and I already miss that girl so much,” the boy could only smile wryly and shake his head.
Seeing Roy admit it, Alice naturally asked, “In that case, Master, would you like to see Nia one more time?”
