Chapter 28: The Master’s Dog is Enough for Me
“Alice, don’t you think this guy is adorable?”
“…Not really.”
“Huh?”
Roy looked puzzled, “But you just…”
“I don’t see anything cute about this creature.” Alice’s gaze was as cold as ice.
Just then, the shopkeeper chimed in, “Little girl, that’s not right.”
The animal-loving shopkeeper started lecturing Alice on the wonders of puppies: “Among pets, puppies are the most special.”
“I’m special to my master too.” Alice replied unexpectedly.
The shopkeeper, completely unaware of Alice’s competitive spirit, continued, “Puppies are both cute and loyal, irreplaceable by other animals.”
Alice insisted, “I’m also cute and loyal, and I won’t be replaced by anyone!”
She did understand the charm of puppies completely, but that’s why she couldn’t tolerate such a lovely little creature stealing her place in her master’s heart.
As long as my master can pet me, that’s enough!
The shopkeeper was a bit confused by Alice’s train of thought but kept on selling: “But puppies can be pets, friends, and the closest companions to their masters.”
Hmm! So what? Whatever a puppy can do, I can do way better; my master doesn’t need such a creature!
Finally, Alice couldn’t hold it in anymore and blurted out her thoughts.
“I can be a pet, a friend, and the closest companion to my master! One dog for my master is enough with me around!”
Suddenly, the pet shop went silent.
The shopkeeper was left dumbfounded, utterly shocked.
Having never encountered the concept of ‘dog’ before, Alice felt no shame—she was almost proud.
Only Roy felt the burning gazes of judgment from others, covering his face in silence.
I just want to escape. But there’s no escape for him.
In the end, Roy and Alice awkwardly fled the pet store, with their attempt to buy a pet going down the drain.
As dusk fell and the last rays of sunlight disappeared, a silver crescent moon hung in the night sky.
The moon in Veszyra was broken. A small crescent, like shattered glass, made it look gloomy and melancholic.
Roy finally managed to explain to Alice that she shouldn’t speak like that. The blonde girl lowered her head, clenched her fists, and apologetically said, “I’m sorry for causing trouble for my master.”
“Sigh, I’m not blaming you. Just be careful next time.”
Even though it was a bit embarrassing, looking at Alice’s dejected appearance, Roy couldn’t muster any blame.
Come to think of it, he hadn’t even managed to buy her an appropriate gift.
The original story mentioned that Alice liked small animals, but why did she change her mind in the pet store?
Roy couldn’t grasp the girl’s thoughts, but he didn’t want their first date to end on a disappointing note.
At the very least, he wanted to give her a perfect gift.
While pondering, a light bulb went off in Roy’s head.
He thought of a perfect alternative.
But time was getting late, and he wasn’t sure if that shop would still be open.
So he found a public bench by the street.
“Alice, wait here for me a moment.”
“Eh…” Alice was taken aback, wanting to say something.
“I’ll be right back.” Roy left her with that, then dove into the crowd of the night.
The girl was a beat behind, stretching out her hand uselessly, not even brushing against the edge of Roy’s clothes.
That familiar figure just vanished into the night.
Since her master asked her to wait, she should just do as told.
It’s only natural…
The night breeze felt a little chilly as Alice sat on the bench, curled up her legs, hugging her knees, staring at the thinning crowd in front of her, feeling that the world was so quiet.
So quiet, it was eerie.
Throughout the day, she had been taken care of by her master but failed to fulfill her maid duties, to truly accompany him and make him happy; instead, she ended up being a hassle for him.
If it was that princess, she wouldn’t be so pathetic, right?
If it were Charlotte Reinhardt, she would be wearing an even more dazzling dress, treating Roy to more luxurious desserts, becoming Roy’s friend and closer companion, bringing Roy more smiles.
Thinking about this, Alice felt like she was utterly inferior compared to that crimson princess.
Turns out she was nothing special at all.
“Woof…”
Suddenly, a small, pitiful sound caught her attention.
Turning towards the source, Alice spotted a little dog.
In the dark, a frail puppy was crammed into a shabby box, its fur messy, eyes lifeless, looking so pitiful.
Was it abandoned by its master?
Alice saw herself in it.
If one day, she didn’t seem special to her master anymore, would she, too, be discarded like that little dog?
That terrifying thought made Alice almost stop breathing, trembling in fear.
She hated dogs.
And she hated being like a dog.
Just then, a couple holding hands approached the little dog, giggling and whispering sweet nothings to each other.
Then they picked up the puppy and walked away.
Alice felt a deep envy for that puppy.
Master, why haven’t you come back yet?
Am I also abandoned by my master, just like that little dog?
Compared to her highness, she had never been special enough.
Perhaps today was the last warmth her master would give her.
The moment that thought crossed her mind, Alice felt a wave of bitterness fill her mouth, an icy chill piercing through her.
She curled up like that earlier little dog, melancholic and alone, waiting to be picked up by someone in the frigid night.
But she didn’t want to be picked up by anyone else.
She only wanted her master.
“Master…”
Alice’s vision blurred, gradually becoming hazy, as she buried her face in her knees.
As if this way, she wouldn’t have to face the world alone anymore.
It wasn’t her first time being alone.
But it was her first time understanding what loneliness truly meant.
All along, Alice had been accustomed to enduring. Enduring hunger, enduring cold, even enduring the deep envy towards Charlotte.
But now, she realized that being without her master’s company was incredibly unbearable.
Under the night sky, a whisper laced with sobs drifted away in the wind.
“Master, please come back…”
“What are you doing?”
“!”
Alice shot her head up, and like a miracle, under the broken moonlight, that gentle face reappeared in her sight.
“Master!”
The girl could no longer suppress her longing and leaped into Roy’s embrace.
She buried her head in Roy’s chest, tightly feeling the warmth she had missed for so long, as all the cold and loneliness melted away in his arms.
This is great.
She hadn’t been abandoned.
