Chapter 33: The Ancient Demigod
As soon as Roy stepped out of the room, he was swept into a warm embrace by Karl, bloodstains and all.
Even with a myriad of questions swirling in his mind, Roy couldn’t find the words to ask.
After the physician took care of Alice, giving her a quick clean-up and a change of fresh clothes, Roy finally made it to the dining table.
The digestion potion had left him exhausted, draining all the energy from his body. Roy felt like he could eat a whole cow.
After demolishing a plate of salad, two plates of steak, and three plates of baked chicken legs, Roy finally wiped his mouth, satisfied.
“Congratulations, my child. You are now an Extraordinary Being,” Karl raised his wine glass, his tone serious yet laced with pride and a hint of guilt.
“Thank you.” Roy raised his glass to clink it gently with his dad’s.
After downing a sip of red wine, Karl finally broached the topic Roy had been eager to hear: “I know what you’re curious about.”
Through the panel, Roy had already confirmed that the “Iron Blood” potion was fine.
But he didn’t buy that Karl hadn’t foreseen today’s strange events.
Why hadn’t anyone come when Alice was screaming for help?
One thing was for sure—Karl meant him no harm; if he had wanted to hurt Roy, he had plenty of ways to do it. But that only deepened Roy’s confusion about the whole situation.
Roy was formulating a polite way to ask about everything when Karl interjected, “But I can’t tell you too much.”
Roy couldn’t hold it in any longer: “Father, I understand you have some… unspeakable secrets, but at least you could give me a heads-up if there’s danger!”
If you had just given me a little warning, I wouldn’t have lost any goodwill and would’ve stocked up on protective items!
Don’t you worry that your son might just kick the bucket with such important things left unsaid?
However, Karl gave a somewhat cryptic reply: “Telling you in advance what will happen tonight would actually be harmful to you.”
“Excuse me…?”
“They don’t like people with ulterior motives.”
That one short statement sent a chill down Roy’s spine.
Was it just his imagination, or did the magical candles around them flicker as if a cold breeze had swept through, momentarily darkening the room?
Roy understood that Karl used the word “They.”
And even said “They”?!
Wait, wait, wait!
The legitimate god of Veszyra is just the Holy Light Goddess worshiped by the Holy Light Church, right?
Anyone else that could be referred to as “They” must be those sinister deities of cult worship!
Come on, Dad, you’re a Marquis with significant power, living in comfort; what kind of screw loose made you want to mess with evil deities?!
But this did tie back to the plot of “Angel’s Waltz.”
So that’s how “Rascal Roy” got entangled with the cult—it turns out it all started with his father!
Everywhere Roy looked, alarms were ringing, but he could hardly say, “Father, isn’t dealing with those malevolent beings a bit risky?”
“Are you misunderstanding something?” Karl looked a bit confused.
Summoning his courage, Roy asked, “Aren’t you working with those evil gods…?”
“Uh?”
“Hmm?”
Father and son stared at each other, dumbfounded.
“What nonsense are you spouting? Dealing with true evil gods would have you rotting to the bone and your soul obliterated with just one glance! There’s no way I’d let you near those beasts!” Karl raised his voice, his eyes wide as he urgently explained, for the first time losing his composure.
Seeing him so furious at the mere mention of evil deities made Roy feel relieved.
Thank goodness, Dad is clean after all.
But this left him even more puzzled about how “Rascal Roy” ever got connected with the evil gods.
Karl rubbed his forehead and collected himself before continuing: “They aren’t evil, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t dangerous. I trust you experienced that this time.”
Roy, almost biting the dust, wholeheartedly agreed.
But this raised even more questions: “Who exactly are They? If they’re neither gods nor evil gods, then what on earth are they…?”
Karl’s gaze turned dark.
“Demigods.”
“Demigods?!”
Roy’s first reaction was disbelief.
Divine power is supreme and untouchable; whether at the peak or in the Holy Light Church, they can only catch a glimpse.
Humans ultimately cannot reach divine power. Even if the gods willingly descend their grace, humans must pay a hefty price.
Karl sensed the confusion in Roy and continued explaining: “Humans can’t touch divine power, but those ancient races certainly could.”
Ancient races…
During the first three eras, they belonged to dragons, elves, wizards, and other non-human species.
They were vastly more powerful than humans, born with Extraordinary Power, free from the constraints of sky and sea, and equipped with wisdom and strength far beyond that of mankind.
If it was them, then indeed there was a possibility of touching divine power.
These glorious civilizations ultimately vanished into the dust of history.
“Are there still traces of ancient beings now?”
“No, what communicates with you isn’t any existing oddity. It’s a non-living, non-dead existence—once a demigod who had tasted divine power!”
“You, during your ascension, established contact with Them.”
“Father, can you do the same?”
Karl shook his head helplessly, his eyes dimming as he sank into remembrance: “How could I? That’s a power belonging only to you and your mother.”
Roy felt his heart race uncontrollably.
“Angel’s Waltz” never mentioned “Rascal Roy’s” mother. Who would have guessed he had such a hidden help?
A demigod is still a god!
In Veszyra, divine power is supreme. Even if he could borrow even a sliver of divine power, that would be a game changer for others!
Of course, dealing with gods is inherently dangerous. These demigods aren’t as perilous as evil gods, but Roy has already felt how terrifying Their whispers and gazes can be.
But that’s only because of his low rank, right?
If he just raised his rank a bit, surely one day he could carry more divine power, maybe even share a drink with a demigod and call them brother!
Family, this is about to get fun!
Now Roy finally understood Karl’s trial.
The reason he wouldn’t let other Extraordinary Beings enter the room was probably to avoid unnecessary Extraordinary Power attracting Their ire. Meanwhile, Alice’s Holy Light power helped him offset the excess demigod power.
Looks like Their standing isn’t quite as high as the Holy Light Goddess.
But Roy was unbothered since the Holy Light Goddess’s own daughter was none other than his maid!
Holding onto both demigod power and nurturing Alice?
Double the joy!
This is it; above one person, the only one stronger than him would still be his little maid!
“How can I improve this power?!” Roy eagerly asked.
Yet, Karl’s reply was like a bucket of cold water dousing all of Roy’s fantasies.
“I don’t know.”
“??? ”
“That’s your mother’s power. She only told me to let you inherit it, but didn’t provide any more details. Everything has to be discovered by you yourself.”
Ah…
Roy felt a bit deflated for a moment but quickly perked up again.
Having something is better than nothing; this is still a good thing.
He had all the time to figure things out. As the son of a marquis, just the “Iron Blood” was enough to keep him safe.
“Let’s put this topic aside for now. You’re officially an Extraordinary Being now, which makes you my successor.”
Karl raised his head, a touch of warmth and encouragement in his elder demeanor: “It’s time to show you the world.”
