Chapter 123: Safe Travels
In the distance, the bizarre army made up of bloodthirsty demons and fearless cultist monsters was slowly approaching like a dark cloud.
On our side, whether adventurers or mages, everyone was battered and worn, faces marked by fatigue and fear.
As the grand mage of the Red Magic School and the commander of this expedition, Malfoy stood at the front, and a wave of helplessness rose within him.
But when he recalled the figure draped in a black robe, boldly marching towards the demon stronghold alongside the witch, his head snapped up, igniting a flame of defiance inside him.
Roy had no idea that his confident “I have a plan” sounded to Malfoy like a comforting last words.
What kind of plan could there be to deal with a Rank 5 archdemon, a creature capable of defeating thousands?
Mr. Sword Demon was likely already prepared for the necessity of sacrifice, willing to give his life for a slim chance of victory!
And that girl named Leanna probably had the same intentions.
Thinking of this, the usually stern and unapproachable Malfoy felt his eyes redden.
He turned to face everyone and shouted with resolve.
“Everyone, I know you are afraid!”
“Fear of death is human nature. Besides, we are up against demons, creatures that once devastated Veszyra hundreds of years ago!”
“Don’t think it’s just you; even I am scared.”
“But this is not the time to retreat!”
“This is no longer an internal strife of the Magic Association, not as simple as eliminating a traitor; this is a war between the human race and the demon race!”
“Extraordinary beings carry a responsibility beyond that of ordinary folks. In gaining strength, honor, and the accomplishments that make us extraordinary, this responsibility demands that we step forward in times of human crisis!”
Malfoy’s rallying cry stirred some waves, but just that.
After all, these official speeches were heard every day. Facing such dire circumstances, morale had sunk too low; a few slogans wouldn’t have much impact.
However, when the next words rang out, the crowd’s expressions shifted.
“I know these demands are tough, but you should all know that while we cower in fear, there are already those rushing to the front for us!”
“Adventurer Sword Demon, and Black Mage Leanna, they had chances to retreat, but they bravely volunteered for the beheading mission, challenging the archdemon to win us a chance at survival!”
At this declaration, the crowd erupted in an uproar.
Everyone had witnessed the unstoppable prowess of those two on the battlefield.
While they held deep respect for them, a spark of fire ignited in their hearts.
Seeing those eyes finally coming alive with fervor, Malfoy managed a smile, for he felt just like them.
With a tight throat, the red mage roared, “That’s right! Adventurers had a way to retreat. Young girls shouldn’t be caught in such perilous situations. But they have resolutely chosen to gamble their lives, facing a Rank 5 foe, taking on the greatest risk!”
“Yes, you can be afraid, you can be uneasy, but you absolutely cannot back down and dishonor the chance they have fought for with their lives!”
“If they can do it, why can’t we?”
“Army, listen up!”
“Let the demon bastards see your spirit!”
Then, the battle cries rang out like thunder.
Regardless of whether they were freedom-loving adventurers, proud mages, or ordinary people lacking extraordinary powers, they all carried the respect for the Sword Demon and Leanna, reigniting their fighting spirit and resolutely charging toward the demons.
The demons who had been raised underground for years had never come face-to-face with a human army.
The most they encountered were the occasional fodder of death row inmates or enemies of the Purple Magic School, which they enjoyed slaughtering.
Thus, in their minds, humans were cowards, weaklings, utterly insignificant when compared to these powerful beings raised in slaughter.
As soon as they showed their claws and fangs, the humans would be scared to death.
But when they finally reached the front lines, planning to unleash massacre on their livestock, they were met with countless seething spells, countless cold blades, and a throng of… crazies, roaring and howling, even crying!
Among them was Hex, who was unable to assist the Sword Demon but was unwilling to give in; Reid, who longed for the Sword Demon’s feats; and Kreya, the vice president, weeping at the thought that her beloved president would undoubtedly never return.
Malfoy’s speech successfully convinced everyone that the Sword Demon and Leanna would not return; this battle was a farewell for them!
The cultist monsters fell cluelessly under an onslaught even more powerful than the last battle, while the intelligent demons cried out in confusion.
Why?
Although historically, there was a blood feud between the two races, wasn’t this hatred supposed to be long forgotten?
Why, when their fighting strength falters, and their bodies are exhausted, do humans show no signs of retreat?!
Why do these humans seem filled with murderous intent, as if their entire families had just been slaughtered, itching to come devour them?!
Humans, could it be they are such a tightly bonded race?!
Roy’s plan was simple.
While both sides were in a chaotic battle, they would attack the barrier under the cover of a handful of adventurers and infiltrate the stronghold.
In fact, the demon killers and the intellectually challenged cultist monsters, along with the city-defending purple mages, had already suffered heavy casualties. Leanna could easily dissolve the barrier with Hydra’s venom; infiltrating it wasn’t difficult at all.
The only trouble lay in the vast demon army they would encounter while breaking through.
Roy wanted to minimize unnecessary losses before confronting Diabolus.
However, the adventurers erupted with a fighting spirit far beyond his expectations, willingly using their bodies to block attacks, refusing to let him and Leanna waste even a bit of energy.
With the adventurers escorting them almost effortlessly, they reached the foot of the barrier and re-entered the estate.
“Sword Demon, Miss Leanna, we will remember you!”
“President, I like…!” “President, we’ll convey your feelings to Mr. Roy!”
“Safe travels!”
In the mournful farewell voices, Roy’s mouth twitched under the black mist, and even Leanna’s expression turned subtle.
Why did this sound like they were going to their deaths…
“What exactly did you tell them?” Leanna asked, rubbing her forehead in exasperation.
“I just said I had a plan…” Roy muttered, feeling somewhat frustrated.
While this surprise attack had indeed uplifted spirits as he anticipated, the way it uplifted seemed a bit off!
Shouldn’t they be cheering for their triumphant return?
This weeping and wailing felt too ominous, right?!
But setting aside these little quirks, the plan itself was going smoothly.
There were almost no guards inside the stronghold. Clearly, Diabolus cared little for this outpost or the entire Purple Magic School.
However, just as they were about to delve deeper into the manor, Roy stopped Leanna.
“Wait, I have something to give you.”
Roy produced a pendant, from which hung a brown gem resembling amber.
This was the purple-tier item they had drawn earlier, the “Heart of the Earth.”
Leanna recognized it immediately as something extraordinary; she hesitated, “This is…”
“A protective item that can withstand one attack from a high-tier extraordinary being.”
“As a gift for your junior, normally I’d be thrilled, but not this time,” Leanna sighed with a weak smile, suppressing the turbulence in her gaze, and looked at Roy seriously. “Your rank is too low; you should wear this instead.”
