Chapter 160: The Pressure of the Game
“If Roy hadn’t stepped in, I bet Eik wouldn’t have relented either.”
Leanna smiled silently, her gaze toward Roy filled with tenderness.
Facing the old man’s sentiments and compliments, Roy replied calmly, “But all of this was probably expected by the Dean, right?”
“Whether it was Nia’s incident or this one, the Dean has clearly put in a lot of effort.”
“Junior?” Leanna raised an eyebrow slightly, tugging at his hand.
But Roy continued to look straight at the old man, diving deeper: “I didn’t think much of it last time, but the Dean’s involvement this time was so direct that it’s hard not to notice.”
“I’m very grateful for the Dean’s help toward me, Nia, and Senpai. But without effort, there’s no reward; a bit of acquaintance doesn’t seem to explain the Dean’s enthusiasm.”
The repeated help made Roy feel a little uneasy.
He could clearly sense that these big shots around him were secretly scheming something.
It was as if they regarded him as a pawn.
Even if they harbored no hostility, this attitude made it hard for Roy to let his guard down.
Rather, if there truly was no malice, laying the cards on the table would facilitate cooperation, right?
“You’re quite cautious. In this regard, you’re much stronger than your parents,” the old man praised a bit unexpectedly.
“You don’t trust me?”
“Favors are favors; trust is trust.”
“Then how can I win your trust?”
Roy hesitated.
Asking this question equated to confronting the game of chess played by the bigwigs, getting involved without a way out.
Honestly, whether it’s power struggles or the survival of the world, Roy didn’t care much about these things; he just wanted to quickly obtain some self-preservation chips to protect himself and those around him.
But can he truly stay uninvolved forever?
Putting aside the cultists for now, the Demon Race was humanity’s mortal enemy, a being that should have been as distant as a fairy tale, yet was now right beside him.
Before such enemies, no Extraordinary Being could remain aloof.
So, Roy found it hard to ignore, letting others pull the strings.
After a moment of silence, Roy finally asked, “I want to know the reason the Dean is helping us, the real reason.”
The old man in gray robes paused, “I can’t go into too much detail.”
“To put it bluntly, I’m not just helping you; I’m helping all of humanity. Your fates are closely linked to all of humanity and even the world.”
No way, that’s a bit too grand…
Roy wanted to laugh, but thinking back on the situation made it hard to crack a smile.
If the Flame Demon truly obtained the powers of the Demon Race from Leanna’s bloodline, would he really break through the Desperate Defense Line and trigger the next demonic tide for humanity?
At that point, not just he and Leanna, but the entire human world would face an immeasurable disaster.
The Great Sage noticed his tension and comforted him with a smile, “You don’t need to worry about that now.”
“I understand, you don’t want to be used as a pawn.”
“Rest assured, no one can control you. Your fate lies entirely in your own hands. To be honest, there’s only so much I can do.” As he said this, the old man revealed a hint of helplessness.
But it felt as if he had said something without saying much, purposely avoiding some details.
“Are you helping me, the False King’s blood, or are you helping Nia and Leanna?”
“Both.”
“Which side is ultimately beneficial for humanity?”
“Both.”
“……”
In any case, the Sage helping him to help humanity felt much more legitimate than the cultists and the Demon Race.
If the False King’s blood and Charlotte’s bloodlines could develop completely, they could indeed contribute to humanity.
Roy still chose to believe that the Sage was not an enemy.
Otherwise, cooped up in the Academy every day, there would have been plenty of opportunities to take action.
However, he had one last question.
“Was my mother a pawn or a player back in the day?”
Though the notes from Rolyn provided very little description about the Dean, Roy didn’t believe there was no connection between them.
The Dean clearly had a keen interest in the False King’s blood and those around it.
After asking this question, the Sage’s gaze finally shifted.
There was hesitation, nostalgia, regret, and many complex emotions that Roy could not decipher.
“She tried to be a player, but in the end, she still fell short.”
The old man patted his shoulder and earnestly advised, “Roy Ainbrad, keep getting stronger. When you reach the peak of Extraordinary Being, you’ll naturally see the bigger picture. Until then, no matter how much I tell you, it will only add to your troubles.”
Then, the quiet world was once again drowned out by the noise of the banquet, and the old man in gray vanished in the blink of an eye.
Sure enough, whether wanting to command his own fate or govern the game, he needed to become stronger…
Roy suddenly felt a bit of pressure.
This pressure didn’t come from the cultists or the Demon Race, but from a more vague premonition.
The game that made the Academy Head tight-lipped required at least a high-tier Extraordinary Being to grasp, a realm that even Rolyn hadn’t reached.
The story of Angel’s Wheel Dance would come to an abrupt stop at some point, but the real world wouldn’t halt for that. Under the calm surface of Veszyra, there seemed to be currents flowing, brewing a crisis that even a high-tier Extraordinary Being like the Academy Head would worry about.
At that time, could he really remain uninvolved?
Just as Roy was feeling conflicted, a comforting scent of bellflowers wafted by, soothing his chaotic thoughts.
“I don’t know what you’re worried about, but no matter what happens, I’ll be with you, just like how you were there for me today.”
The brown-haired girl teased, poking the gloomy young man’s face with her finger: “Besides, today’s a good day, cheer up! Don’t think too much, or it’ll be unpleasant.”
“Yes, yes, yes……” Roy responded helplessly, his expression softening unconsciously.
“Speaking of which, about that matter…” Leanna glanced toward another girl in the distance, hesitating awkwardly, clearly troubled.
The pretty brows that were once elegant were now clouded, looking a bit haggard, showing how much she had been worried about the issue recently.
“Oh, that matter.” Roy finally remembered the initial purpose of attending this banquet.
He wanted to tell Leanna the result right now, but the fiery glares from the two girls made him feel like he was sitting on pins and needles.
It seemed their anger hadn’t subsided…
Leanna noticed his predicament, giving a wry smile, “Tomorrow, my mother would like to invite you for dinner to show her gratitude. We can discuss things then.”
Roy nodded, “Let’s talk about it then.”
——————————
The leader of the Black Magic Sect woke from darkness, staring into the void in fury.
“Sage, repeatedly sabotaging my plans, is the False King’s blood and those nobles in on it as well?!”
Leanna concurrently served as the chief sorceress for both the Black Magic and Purple Magic academies, meaning she now had the leverage to resist and no longer had to be at his beck and call.
But so what? In the grand scheme of things, he couldn’t protect her forever! One day, he would acquire the power of the World-Devouring Python… Hmph, the so-called Sage was just another pawn in the game, and even the mightiest have their moments of weakness in complex situations.
For now, he would bide his time; one day, his chance to strike would come!
“Great Black Sorcerer, if you have concerns, feel free to let us help you with your troubles.”
The respectful words broke Eik’s train of thought.
Yet, looking at the humble girl with flaxen hair bowing in front of him, Eik remained coldly indifferent.
If Roy were here, he would be surprised to find that the girl was none other than Mina, a member of the Cults of the Dark Dragon he had fought against before.
