Chapter 38: Enwei’s Oddity
The attacks from the razor-sharp birds and the bird-headed men weren’t particularly strong, but after getting injured too much, the two had to take a break.
At this moment, Jayaika was quietly bandaging the two bloodied boys with medicated cloth.
Just a moment ago, the two boys had made disrespectful comments and dismissed Jayaika as useless, but now, under her care, they were blushing and muttering thanks.
Seeing that they had lost their initial arrogance and calmed down, Roy finally sat on a rock, intending to have a proper chat with them.
“Now do you understand why you shouldn’t rush ahead?”
“Maybe you thought it was cool to charge in non-stop, but going too fast, being careless, and neglecting defense will only lead to falling into an ambush. Plus, abandoning your teammates isn’t a wise choice. Without Jayaika’s healing abilities, you wouldn’t even have the chance to make me waste my breath.”
Mark and White both had decent individual strength, at the ordinary Sequence 7 level.
However, their practical experience was lacking, to say the least.
All along, Roy had always collaborated with top-tier talents like Charlotte, Nia, and Leanna.
Even without mentioning them, he was usually surrounded by the Gale Knights, seasoned adventurers, and powerful mages.
Now facing these two greenhorns, Roy even felt like chuckling.
Even without the title of False King, being Sequence 7, these two were still far from his match.
But this was practically the level of most first-year students. It was rare to find someone like Charlotte, who grew up on the battlefield, or Nia, who loved adventure since childhood, or Leanna, who underwent harsh training.
Let alone himself, a False King constantly chased by Cultists.
So, Roy didn’t have high expectations for these two greenhorns.
The two boys looked awkward, unable to lift their heads, unsure how to defend themselves.
After all, if it hadn’t been for Roy stepping in, not only would Jayaika have been dragged down by them, but they would have sunk themselves too.
“Alright, making mistakes isn’t scary.”
“But if you keep ignoring advice, don’t blame me for being rude,” Roy’s voice grew serious.
Looking down at the two, he said coldly, “I understand you’re unhappy with me and I don’t expect you to consider me a good buddy. But for the practical exam, teamwork is essential.”
“If you want good results, behave yourself. Otherwise, next time there’s a mishap, I won’t bother with you.”
Mark opened his mouth, seeming to want to apologize, but he couldn’t swallow his pride.
Instead, White lowered his head first, apologizing, “It was my fault just now.”
“I’ll do my best to cooperate with you, Roy, and hope you won’t hold it against me.”
Mark nodded awkwardly, saying, “Me too.”
“I was too foolish and underestimated you. If it weren’t for your help, I might—” Mid-sentence, Mark clenched his teeth, feeling utterly embarrassed.
At this moment, a smile appeared on Roy’s face.
“Don’t worry about it. Who hasn’t made a mistake?”
Besides, with your level of nitpicking, you can’t even hurt a hair on me, what’s there to fret about?
Compared to Cultists and the Demon Race, you’re just adorably naive!
If I were to get serious, I’d be tired.
“Let’s get moving once we’re rested,” Roy waved his hand, ending the topic.
Seeing that Roy didn’t take out his anger or mock them, Mark and White exchanged glances and forced a bitter smile.
Even though they were peers, Roy was so much more mature than them that remembering their previous provocations made them feel both ashamed and regretful, wanting to slap themselves.
Restored, the four quickly reached a cave downstream of the creek.
However, Roy didn’t expect to see a familiar figure waiting there.
Dressing rather casually, with a decent-looking face but an exaggerated smile, the slightly lackluster man was Enwei.
For some reason, his complexion was much paler than during their last meeting.
Wow, just a few days had passed, this guy must have been indulging in wine and women to look like this, right?
But I heard his salary got slashed pretty badly, how does he still have money to waste? Or is he just rewarding himself?
Roy couldn’t help but critique Enwei, lowering his assessment another notch.
“Students, you’ve worked hard! I didn’t expect you to arrive so quickly; should I say it’s to be expected from Roy’s team?”
“By the way, I truly feel bad for suspecting Roy earlier! Thinking it over, how could the son of a Marquis be lacking in anything? I hope you won’t mind, Roy.”
The overly flattering attitude made the boy frown.
“Enwei, we’re still in an exam. How about you tell us what’s next?”
“Alright, alright.” Teacher Enwei picked up a nearby box and pulled out a note.
It read: Steal the young of the blazing sun bird or its eggs.
“Oh? Looks like you’re lucky. It’s neither a hunting task nor a treasure hunt—just stealing bird eggs. It shouldn’t be too hard!” Enwei squinted with delight, looking as if he’d hit the jackpot, beaming, “I believe this will be a piece of cake for you, Roy!”
“Thank you for your concern, Teacher.”
As Roy and the group set off, Enwei’s smile slowly faded as he watched the boys leave, his pale, cold face with sharp features looking particularly eerie in the shadows.
“Roy Ainbrad, son of a Marquis, champion of the trials, the genius that everyone admires?”
“Heh, in the end, just a pathetic little brat.”
“I can’t watch you turn into a mere skeleton, what a pity.”
Following the river deeper into the canyon, the monsters on the way decreased significantly. With Mark and White no longer bold enough to shout, the group had some leisure to chat.
“By the way, don’t you guys think that teacher is a bit strange…” Jayaika turned to glance back, feeling uneasy.
“His face looks so pale, it’s terrifying.”
“Forget the face; just the excessive flattery is already off-putting.” The noble-born White, being sharp in dealing with people, had a bad premonition.
Mark shrugged, not too concerned: “That guy offended Roy before; he’s probably just trying to get on his good side.”
Roy, however, fell silent.
Getting on good terms?
That sounds a bit harsh, but being a sycophant is definitely a skill that can be divided into two categories.
If that guy were really that clever, how could he come flaunting himself as a mentor without even understanding my results?
Most importantly, that pale, cold face inexplicably felt a bit familiar.
Thinking of this, a sliver of alertness arose in Roy.
“I have a proposal for our actions ahead.”
As soon as he spoke, the three stopped chatting simultaneously, all ears.
