Chapter 50: Cross-Server Communication
After finishing up the bandaging, Alice insisted on dressing Roy.
Roy thought to himself, “I’m not a severely injured patient! I’m perfectly fine; having a girl help me get dressed is a bit much,” so he politely declined the offer.
Besides, being wrapped in bandages felt like wearing half an outfit.
The young boy, of course, didn’t notice the fleeting disappointment in Alice’s eyes.
Just when he was eagerly eyeing the spread of food in front of him, Alice snatched away the knife, fork, and plate.
“Master is injured and it’s not easy to move. Let Alice feed you.”
“Uh, no, this little scratch isn’t a big deal!”
“……. If the master doesn’t want it, then forget it.” The little maid’s eyes drooped dejectedly, looking like a gold-haired puppy being shunned by its owner.
Roy immediately felt a rush of guilt and quickly changed his tune: “If you don’t mind the trouble, I guess it’s okay.”
Alice perked up instantly, her spirit soaring.
So, Roy obediently lay back on the bed and let Alice serve him.
The little maid scooped a spoonful of tomato soup, gently blew on it, and slowly held it up in front of him.
Though the little maid had a neutral expression, Roy inexplicably felt a lively atmosphere around them.
“Master, ah~”
Sometimes Roy wondered if the master-servant relationship was backwards—who was really raising whom?
And besides, he was the older one!
Having a younger maid was cute, but being cared for so attentively made Roy feel embarrassed.
He suspected that if this kept up, one day he might—
“Master, ah~!” Alice repeated, bringing the spoon a little closer.
He felt like if he took that spoonful of soup, he’d lose something important.
But unlike the last time at the café, it was just the two of them here.
Being a bit more affectionate didn’t seem like a bad idea, right?
Preparing himself mentally, Roy finally swallowed his shame and slowly opened his mouth, sipping the tomato soup under the maid’s watchful gaze.
Just at that moment, the door swung open, and in rushed a crimson figure.
“Roy, how’s your injury…… um?”
At that moment, Alice was leaning halfway toward Roy, who was sitting at the edge of the bed with just a few bandages covering his bare torso.
The cozy scene between master and servant left Charlotte, who had plenty of theoretical experience but zero practical experience, utterly shocked.
In a heartbeat, she concocted all sorts of master-servant plays in her mind, blushing furiously as she fled the room and slammed the door behind her.
“Sorry for interrupting!”
Roy nearly choked on the soup.
“Wait, wait, you misunderstood! Come back!”
A crack in the door opened, revealing a suspicious gaze.
“Misunderstood?”
“Misunderstood!”
Roy spent a full minute clarifying to the princess that their healthy and pure master-servant relationship was definitely not what it seemed!
“Hmph~? You seem to be enjoying yourself,” Charlotte said, sitting on the edge of the bed, crossing her legs wrapped in black stockings, adopting a slight scowl, her tone somewhat displeased.
“I came to check on your injury, but seeing you so comfortable with your little maid, I assume there’s no big problem.”
“Ugh, I told you it was a misunderstanding!”
Charlotte squinted her eyes, exposing him: “But you look like you enjoy it! The soup being fed to you must be tastier than usual, huh?”
Roy was left speechless and felt utterly embarrassed.
Wait, hold on?
Why was he even flustered? Was there really a need to explain to Charlotte? She probably wasn’t even interested in Alice, right?
Then it got weirder.
If Charlotte wasn’t interested in Alice, why did she care so much about what he was doing with her?
The more he thought about it, the more confused he became.
But for Alice, it was pretty clear.
The princess wanted to get close to her master, while the master didn’t want to give the princess the wrong idea about what had just happened.
Her presence must’ve felt intrusive.
Though she was somewhat reluctant, Alice understood the situation.
As the master’s personal maid, it was her duty to support him, and stepping aside was the right thing to do.
“If the two of you want to catch up, I won’t disturb any longer,” she said respectfully with a bow, then swayed her skirt and exited the scene.
Roy was left alone with Charlotte, feeling somewhat lost.
Wait, you’re just leaving like that?!
You were so warm earlier; how come it suddenly feels so chilly now?!
No, this isn’t just chilly; it’s like my warm coat just flew away!
A suppressed chuckle snapped Roy’s attention back: “You miss her?”
“Or are you just dying to be alone with me?”
The princess rested her chin on her hand, her expression slightly sulky, her eyes narrowing as her lashes fluttered like an upset little red cat.
Fortunately, with his prior experience, Roy had some tips on how to placate a cat.
“I’m just joking; it’s hard not to feel a bit nervous around such a beautiful girl like Charlotte.”
Though Princess Charlotte often put on a brave and proud front in public, she was actually quite innocent—complimenting her beauty never hurt.
Charlotte’s expression softened immediately, her gaze drifting away: “You still have the energy to say such things. Looks like you’re feeling pretty good.”
“That reassures me.”
“Reassure?!” Roy pondered for a moment before laughing. “Seems like Charlotte really cares about me.”
“Don’t flatter yourself. It’s just the duty of the princess to care for her subjects. Who cares about you?” Charlotte’s haughty demeanor cracked a bit, her head turning slightly as she teased him.
The princess’s duty—Roy was all too familiar with this line.
Charlotte had been bound by her position and responsibilities since childhood, which prevented her from getting close to others like a normal girl.
So whenever she showed concern, she instinctively used this reasoning to hide her tenderness.
After all, according to her duty, she should be visiting all the injured noble kids.
Although she didn’t ask, Roy keenly noticed how her gaze kept wandering back to his bandages.
So it seemed that Charlotte truly was concerned for him.
Roy appreciated this bond in his heart and smiled, choosing not to burst the princess’s little bubble.
But he felt a bit guilty toward Charlotte.
They had agreed to dance at the party, but now it was a total mess—not only was her gown ruined, but the upcoming birthday celebration would also be rushed.
Roy didn’t regret his decision, but he did feel remorse and lament over breaking the promise.
“I’m really sorry about today,” Roy sighed heavily.
“Sorry?” Charlotte looked confused.
“Yeah, messing up the banquet like this is my fault.”
However, his sincere-sounding apology conveyed a completely different meaning in Charlotte’s ears.
The young boy’s melancholic profile was artistically charming, yet it also made Charlotte’s heart feel some discomfort.
She recalled what Karl had said to Roy back then. Could Roy have been scolded?
What a joke?!
He hadn’t done anything wrong!
Thinking of this made Charlotte’s chest boil with anger, unable to calm down as she stood up.
“You don’t need to apologize! On the contrary, you should be proud of what you did today!”
“…… Huh???”
