Chapter 163: Why Can’t It Be Me
The moonlight spilled down, and snowflakes danced from the sky.
Bathed in silvery light, the two seemed to have frozen time in winter’s grasp, letting the snow pile on their shoulders without wishing to part.
After a long kiss, the girl breathed lightly, her ice-blue eyes melting like spring water, edging deeper into the boy’s embrace, like a tamed little wolf.
No one would reject the kiss of their lover.
However, just as Roy was about to savor the fragrance of the blue rose once more, a sudden, ear-piercing sound of shattering glass echoed down the hallway, startling Xue Nuo so much she nearly jumped out of her skin.
“Sorry…”
After the whisper of an apology, when she looked back toward the corridor, Xue Nuo’s gaze was cold enough to kill.
“Clumsy fool. I wonder who that useless guy is; someone needs to give him a good talking to.”
Once things go south, Xue Nuo turns pretty domineering.
Not wanting her to become a tyrant, Roy quickly persuaded, “No need. We should be heading back anyway.”
Roy wrapped his arms around her delicate waist from behind, whispering amid the delicate snowflakes, “No hurry, tonight is long, and no one will disturb us.”
“Tonight, I only belong to you.”
“…Mm.”
After the snow and ice melted, only water-like tenderness remained.
————————————
The moon was cool as water.
A shattered moon hung high in the sky, casting its silver glow upon every living being as an equal blessing.
Once, it illuminated Alice and Roy; now, it bathed Roy and Xue Nuo in the same moonlight.
At the moment she witnessed their kiss, an unprecedented agitation tore through Alice’s heart, prompting an inexplicable urge to escape.
When she came to her senses, the glass cup had already slipped from her hand, and she found herself unwittingly taking steps forward.
But no matter how she tried to flee, she couldn’t escape the cage of moonlight.
Unbeknownst to her, she wound up back at that balcony.
The very balcony where they had embraced and kissed.
The same balcony, the same moonlight, the same swirling snowflakes, yet it felt so suffocatingly empty.
Alice dazedly walked to the bottom of the balcony, no longer using Holy Light to ward off the cold, letting snow bury her shoulders. Only this chill could slightly soothe the restlessness within.
Yet, after the restlessness faded, an endless void remained.
“Everyone loves the master so much.”
“Despite loving him so clearly, they’re willing to share this happiness with him.”
Alice had observed each of their attitudes along the way.
At first, Charlotte had been so reserved and proud, trying hard to hide any fondness she felt.
Nia even had a strange misunderstanding and inexplicable hostility toward the master.
Leanna once tried to use dirty tricks to take the master away, even trafficking him to the Southern Sea Kingdom without hesitation at one point.
Xue Nuo had also been critical of the master’s romantic issues at first but ended up joining in herself.
They had all changed so much.
All of this was thanks to the master.
The master had given them happiness, and so they were willing to return the same happiness.
“They’re all good kids.”
It must be so fulfilling for the master to encounter so many excellent, kind girls willing to go to such lengths for him.
No, was that even in doubt?
Hadn’t she already witnessed it?
A kiss under the red castle’s sunset, a kiss beneath the brilliant starry sky, a kiss under the autumn maple leaves, a kiss in the moonlight reflecting off the snow.
Roy Ainbrad’s happiness required no questioning whatsoever.
As a maid, feeling joy for the master’s happiness was simply natural.
It should be natural.
It was meant to be natural.
But, why…
With great effort, her lips lifted, her eyelashes fluttering gently, but in the end, she couldn’t manage a smile, let alone her usual expressionless face.
Her vision blurred with tears, her shoulders trembled endlessly, and she couldn’t control the sobs escaping her lips.
The petite maid knelt in the snow, helplessly covering her pitiful face.
Clearly, the master had found happiness, so why did her heart ache like this?
She didn’t want more girls around the master.
She didn’t want the master kissing and being intimate with other girls.
She didn’t want it to go on like this, feeling the master’s gaze drift further away from her.
Ah, so it turned out…
From the very beginning, she hadn’t been indifferent at all.
From the start, she didn’t want to see the master with other girls.
Not even for a moment.
Not wanting to be disliked by the master, not wanting to be abandoned by him, she had desperately suppressed her feelings, wanting to play the role of a good, understanding child, a maid who would always obey her master.
But in the end, the very thing she didn’t want was just what she didn’t want.
Alice, how selfish you are. Realizing her true feelings, Alice felt a suffocating bitterness rise within her heart.
Charlotte, Nia, Leanna, Xue Nuo.
They could set aside their possessiveness for the master’s happiness, making concessions. They were all good girls.
Only Alice was different.
As a maid, she couldn’t wholeheartedly feel joy for her master’s happiness. She even thought…
What if they weren’t around.
What if it was her instead.
What if she could be the princess fighting side by side with Roy, the fairy bringing him sweetness, the witch he redeemed, the teacher who warmed his heart…
Clearly, they matched the master in strength and status, even had an unbreakable bond that could bring him happiness.
Yet she found herself wishing more than once that she could be the one kissing the master.
Words failed her.
This was jealousy.
Jealousy toward those already chosen by Roy.
“I’m sorry, master.”
“Only Alice is the bad child…”
In the cold, lonely night, the blonde girl could no longer hold back, hugging herself tightly while shedding tears.
“Master, why can’t it be me?”
The moonlight continued to spill, and the snow wind howled.
The thoughts the girl had long suppressed ultimately dissipated into the air, receiving no response.
——————————
In the Holy City, the City of Light, Luxerio.
The Holy City was bright tonight.
Goddess sent down a divine decree; the sacred selection ceremony was about to commence, where a new saint would inherit the blessing of Holy Light, bringing new salvation and grace to the world.
To this day, the continent had long been free of catastrophic disasters.
The saint selection ceremony had become a mere religious festivity.
Yet, that was just the surface.
In the Holy Cathedral.
Upon the lofty seat, a magnificently built man, who was a bit too plump, slowly opened one eye.
His eye, as holy and glorious as the dawn.
The Eye of Divine Observation, just as the legends said, could see through the fates beneath the stars.
“The fifth one.”
Just those few words stirred up waves of agitation among the church’s higher-ups.
“The fifth one? Is the prophetic day finally upon us?!”
“Blessed! Our true savior!”
“Holy Light above, Goddess above! We finally have hope!”
Looking at the ecstatic expressions of the people, the Pope on the throne couldn’t help but smile faintly.
“Everyone, rejoice! We have finally welcomed the fifth candidate, the destined one from the prophecy!”
“The Chosen of the Holy Light Goddess, our true… savior!”
