Chapter 166: Making Others Happy with Suffering
As the winter break was coming to an end, Roy spent a few relaxed days playing with the girl, exploring the quiet Wind City.
On the day everyone was preparing to head back, feeling nostalgic about the end of the holiday, Xue Nuo suddenly remembered something.
To be precise, it was someone.
“Wenter Rose, we almost forgot about him.”
When the name came up, Xue Nuo clearly showed some displeasure.
Given Wenter’s transgressions and personal grievances, she wouldn’t let him live even a second longer if it weren’t for his value as the imperial prince.
“Care? That wasn’t really enjoyable. If you don’t want to come, you don’t have to.”
“Am I only someone who can share good times with Teacher Xue Nuo? I’d go through fire and water just to be with her!”
“That’s quite an exaggerated statement…”
Despite her sarcastic remarks, Xue Nuo’s expression softened considerably, and the shadow of meeting Wenter dissipated significantly.
The Count and Countess behind them looked stunned.
In the days they had been apart, these elite girls hadn’t caused any more trouble, and instead, Roy and Xue Nuo had progressed to this level!
But could you guys be a little more aware of your surroundings while getting all lovey-dovey?
Holding hands and showing affection outside a prison? It’s just weird! Trying to mess with those poor prisoners, huh?!
The four, along with a wolf, ventured deep into the prison and found the imperial prince, his hands and feet crippled.
Surprisingly, compared to his previous hysteria, Wenter seemed a little more composed. Despite being shackled, the royal demeanor reemerged in his eyes.
Like a vicious wolf.
Does he have some kind of hidden card up his sleeve?
After the previous sneak attack by the undead empress, the four felt a bit of PTSD. Seeing Wenter looking all enigmatic made them uneasy.
“Finally, you’ve come?”
“You should realize the consequences of attacking the royal family by now, right?”
“Surely, Mother has already put pressure on you, sending a massive army, rendering you helpless, huh?!”
Silence hung in the air.
“Got nothing to say now? Hmph, this is the price you pay for striking against me!”
“Even if you can fend off the demon race, this is merely a border of my empire, just a dog of our nation! We have a hundred ways to put you to the sword!”
Wenter displayed an ecstatic expression, high and mighty, laughing with glee: “Now, even if you want to beg for mercy, it’s too late! Roy, you’re dead! As for Xue Nuo, you’ve lost your chance to marry me and are fit only to be my plaything…”
“Pfft.”
At that moment, all the sadness he had faced in two lifetimes flashed through Roy’s mind, yet he couldn’t help but laugh out loud.
This sparked Brittany to burst out laughing, unable to hold back any longer. The old Count coughed continuously, uncharacteristically exuding a joyful aura.
Even the usually cold Ice Beauty couldn’t resist a twitch of her lips.
Although Little White couldn’t understand what was being said, the atmosphere had an infectious effect, sticking out its tongue and grinning goofily.
Interrogating war prisoners is generally not a pleasant task unless you’re a psychopath.
Even for someone as cold as Xue Nuo, did she really want to come and seek trouble? Why not enjoy being cozy with her lover? If it weren’t for duty, she wouldn’t care to be here.
Roy had been slightly scared earlier too, genuinely thinking Wenter had some trump card up his sleeve.
Turns out, that was just wishful thinking.
Creating such laughter in the heavy atmosphere of the prison all by himself, this guy really has some talent.
“Prince Wenter, have you considered joining a circus?”
Roy’s remark made Brittany, who had just calmed down, erupt with laughter again.
“Damn it, what are you laughing at? Stop laughing!”
“Mother will come and flatten the borders of the empire. Do you dare disrespect me?!”
At this point, no matter what Wenter said, it was hard to keep anyone tense.
Who would take a defeated dog seriously?
“I think you’re overestimating your mother-son bond.” Roy pulled out an imperial morning news article, reading, “His Majesty declares that Wenter Rose colluded with the enemies of humanity, causing disaster, now stripped of his title and political rights for life, to be dealt with by the local lord of Snow Wind Fortress…”
“No!”
“It can’t be! Mother wouldn’t abandon me! You—!”
Wenter lunged forward like a wild wolf but was firmly anchored in place by the chains, his eyes bloodshot and screaming in madness.
Roy calmly said, “Looks like your mother doesn’t care for you as much as you thought.”
These words shattered the last line of defense in Wenter’s heart.
To put it simply, he had long known how cruel and heartless his mother was, but in the dark and dismal cell, he needed some kind of psychological support to hold on.
Now, the bubble of hope had completely burst, leaving only despair.
Wenter collapsed to the ground, as if all the bones in his body had been drained.
No one felt pity.
“Wenter Rose, for your crimes, a thousand cuts would not be excessive. But I’m giving you a chance now.” Xue Nuo spoke coldly.
“Explain your royal family’s future plans clearly, and I can grant you a painless death.”
The best exchange condition is to let me die?!
Wenter was about to shout, but a more desperate scene awaited him.
“Teacher Xue Nuo, what could this guy possibly know? Let’s not waste time on him.” Roy played along, pretending.
“True. Let him rot in prison.”
Xue Nuo was even harsher, turning to leave without acting a shred.
“Wait, wait! Please, I’ll talk, I have information you absolutely want!”
Who knows what kind of torture Wenter endured in prison these days that made him actually willing to accept this condition.
But no one cared about his mistreatment.
The borders had long harbored resentment against the royal family, and because of Wenter’s turmoil, countless families had been torn apart. It was only fair for the lower-ranked soldiers to vent their anger on him.
Neither Roy nor Xue Nuo believed he could reveal anything too valuable, treating it as just a formality.
To their surprise, Wenter unexpectedly spilled a major secret.
“The advisor! There’s an advisor at Mother’s side!”
“The plan to team up with the demon race and cultists, as well as the scheme to frame Kastak Andevish, all relies on his counsel…!”
As soon as he finished speaking, an overwhelming pressure that belonged to Xue Nuo erupted.
“Just as I suspected, the matters from back then were definitely your doing.” A frost formed in Xue Nuo’s eyes.
Not just Xue Nuo, even the Count and Countess exuded a murderous aura.
“At that time, the royal family forcibly ordered my father to investigate the enemy outside the defenses but was ambushed. The royal troops supposed to support Snow Wind Fortress did not send a single soldier; looking back, that was clearly your deliberate conspiracy to harm us!”
Though she had suspected it long ago, hearing the murderer of her parents admit it in person ignited a fiery rage within Xue Nuo.
Even if the true culprit wasn’t Wenter, in her eyes, every member of the royal family was complicit.
The icy pressure filled the cell, instantly encasing Wenter in frost.
Even with the same bloodline, given Wenter’s weak state, he’d stop breathing within ten seconds.
Fortunately, Roy squeezed Xue Nuo’s palm, stopping her murderous intent.
Wenter, given a reprieve, trembled and gasped for air, looking at the tightly clasped hands of the two with immense humiliation and bitterness, yet feeling a strange relief to be granted a second chance.
Roy didn’t care about his life, not even giving him a chance to breathe, and kept pressing, “Tell me more about that advisor, what’s the deal?”
