Chapter 64: The Hunt
Unfortunately, the short journey quickly came to an end.
The “cake” was moving way too fast; in less than half an hour, we flew across half of the royal garden and landed in a wide-open lawn.
Until Roy let go of the griffon, Charlotte still felt a bit reluctant to part ways.
“So where are we headed next?” Roy asked, naturally and gentlemanly extending his hand.
“Just follow me,” Charlotte replied, confidently taking Roy’s hand and jumping off the griffon with ease.
Neither of them noticed that they no longer felt shy about holding hands.
This royal garden had always been the hunting ground of the Lionheart family and was also Charlotte’s playground.
The girl led Roy through what seemed like a bushy trail, and before long, they found their target.
“Shh, do you see it?” Charlotte crouched down, lowering her voice as she pointed to a branch in the distance.
About fifty meters away, a dark green pheasant was dozing on a branch.
Its deep green feathers were the perfect camouflage in the forest; if Charlotte hadn’t pointed it out, Roy wouldn’t have noticed anything there.
“This guy is called the Sichuan Chicken; it has a fragrant flavor from the pepper without needing any marination, and its meat is delicious!”
“Watch closely!”
Charlotte flicked her finger, and flames flowed, manifesting a pure flame bow in her hands.
This was one of the Extraordinary abilities of Lionheart: Weapon Configuration: Fire.
Charlotte skillfully drew back the bowstring, her expression focused and fierce.
The Sichuan Chicken suddenly opened its eyes, sensing the murderous intent, and jumped into the air.
At that moment, Charlotte effortlessly released the arrow, the breeze sweeping through her hair, looking dashing.
“Ga!”
The next moment, a crimson streak pierced straight through the Sichuan Chicken’s figure.
Charlotte turned her head, tossing her hair with glee, and raised an eyebrow, asking, “How’s that?”
In the Kingdom of Lionheart, martial prowess was valued, and even for women, strength was a plus.
Charlotte could have just thrown a fireball, but she wanted to show Roy her archery skills, aiming to win his admiration.
“Amazing!” Roy immediately applauded and said in awe, “You must have practiced archery since you were little; you’re much more dedicated than I am.”
The Lionheart’s boost to weapon control was minimal, so this skilled archery was entirely Charlotte’s own achievement.
Such straightforward praise left Charlotte feeling a bit shy instead.
Even though her lips were almost curling up in a smile, she pretended to be indifferent and huffed, “Well, at least you have some eyes for talent.”
Affection Level +10.
Seeing the notification pop up, Roy pressed on with his praises, his eyes full of worship: “Honestly, Charlotte is really incredible!”
Charlotte felt her ears getting warm from Roy’s sincere compliments, and her pride began to fade as she awkwardly turned away, “W-well, it doesn’t benefit you to compliment me like that!”
Affection Level +20.
Roy’s candid praise energized Charlotte; she kept releasing arrows, taking down several Sichuan Chickens and even harvesting their eggs from nests in the trees.
Roy, meanwhile, was quite satisfied with his affection gain.
Only the world of injured Sichuan Chickens was completed.
But just as they were about to head back, Charlotte suddenly halted, nearly causing Roy to bump into her.
“What’s wrong?”
“Shh! Shh shh shh! Look over there!”
Charlotte pulled Roy down with her, her eyes wide open.
In the distance, flashes of electricity flickered, and a gigantic, furry creature was rolling around on the grass.
“That’s the Lightning Matsutake Rabbit! The top-tier delicacy in our kingdom! That thing only eats matsutake, so its meat is tender and melts in your mouth, not to mention, it has the fragrance of matsutake! I’ve only eaten it at birthday banquets!” If Roy hadn’t been right there, Charlotte might have drooled at the sight.
The roasted Lightning Matsutake Rabbit was the most famous dish in the kingdom, and Roy had heard that it was worth far more than its weight in gold.
But was that thing really a rabbit?!
With its plump body, at first glance, Roy thought it was a small pig!
But delicious or not, Roy remembered that hunting it was incredibly difficult, even for many Extraordinary Beings.
“Charlotte, can you take it down?”
Originally, Charlotte hesitated whether to take action, but after hearing those words, she proudly patted her chest in front of Roy and said, “Leave it to me!”
Charlotte suddenly stood up and shot an arrow!
However, at the flash of lightning, when the fire arrow exploded, it only burned the grass, but the round, fluffy yellow rabbit had already leaped ten meters away.
The fat rabbit turned back, squinting its eyes, smirking with a “ji ji ji~!” sound of mockery!
Charlotte’s forehead immediately had a “#” shape appearing.
“Great, it’s dead for sure!”
Charlotte unleashed a rapid volley, her longbow transforming into a crossbow. But the fat rabbit, moving with agility unbefitting its size, evaded the dense rain of fire arrows and darted into the forest!
Roy and Charlotte took off after it, but during the chase, Charlotte couldn’t get a single hit.
Gradually, she gave up her bow and started throwing fireballs.
The fireballs exploded with a loud bang, shattering rocks over a meter wide. Any contact with the Lightning Matsutake Rabbit would be lethal!
The problem was, she just couldn’t hit it.
Seeing Charlotte’s eyes reddening from frustration, Roy quickly grabbed her: “Enough! Let’s just leave it!”
They had already abandoned the Sichuan Chickens and eggs along the way; if they kept this up, what if some wild beast came across their leftovers and cleaned them out? All their efforts would be in vain!
“But… look at that thing! It’s still munching on grass!” Charlotte pointed at the fat rabbit in the distance, stamping her foot, her emotions a mix of urgency, anger, and frustration.
The little girl’s eyes were red, her mood visibly breaking down, resembling a kitten that had been scolded; it was quite pitiful.
Roy, unable to bear it, sighed and suggested, “How about I give it a try?”
With that, Roy stepped forward while Charlotte obediently stepped back.
Roy activated Weapon Projection, conjuring a metal bow and several metal arrows, aiming keenly at the distant prey.
That calm and focused expression was deeply imprinted in Charlotte’s mind, making her instinctively hold her breath, scared to disturb him.
With a ‘swish,’ the arrow flew out, and the fat rabbit zipped past with a flash of electricity.
In that instant, Roy shot a second arrow with such speed that Charlotte couldn’t even see how he did it.
After all, she was too busy admiring his handsome face.
The metal arrow accurately struck the fat rabbit’s backside, making it roll in pain.
Unfortunately, the Lightning Matsutake Rabbit had incredible speed and defense that far exceeded ordinary beasts, and what should have been a killing blow only inflicted a slight injury.
In pain, the fat rabbit finally dared not stay any longer; it quickly scampered away, leaving behind a trail of sparks.
Roy’s marksmanship guaranteed accuracy, but he couldn’t match the explosive power of Charlotte’s shots!
“Charlotte, come help me!”
“Ugh, how do I help?”
Seeing their target about to disappear into the depths of the forest, Roy panicked and, disregarding gender boundaries, grabbed Charlotte’s hand, pulling her into his embrace.
