Chapter 43: Let Me Teach You Two Things
“May this Saint’s Trial yield a perfect result and earn the blessings of the goddess!”
“May the Holy Light be with us!”
Led by Archbishop Simon, the followers of the Holy Light Church made the sign of the cross on their chests.
Outside the believers, many raised their wine glasses in respect.
After a simple toast, there were no additional speeches planned for this welcoming feast.
However, once Simon stepped down, the orange-haired young boy Levi took his place and stood at the center of the banquet hall.
He snapped his fingers casually, and the surge of holy light erupted, instantly grabbing everyone’s attention.
“Everyone, mind if I say a few words?”
Technically, the Saint’s Guard had a status lower than the candidates for sainthood, but Levi was an exception.
He was the chief of the Holy Knight Order, personally bestowed the holy sword by the Pope, and acknowledged as the sword saint’s direct disciple, Sword Saint Rayo!
The title of guard didn’t matter; Levi had already earned equal recognition alongside the Son of Light, Saan, who was regarded as one of the greatest of the Eastern Continent.
“Of course, we don’t mind!”
“We’ve been wanting to have a chat with Lord Levi!”
“Welcome, our Sword Saint’s disciple!”
Everyone, except Teresa, applauded enthusiastically, beaming with smiles, while the other Holy Light Church followers couldn’t hide their admiration, cheering for the young swordsman on stage.
After the uproar faded, Levi nodded in satisfaction.
“The Saint’s Trial is a grand event of our church held once a century. To be a saint requires shouldering the heavy responsibility of church development and saving humanity; only those with noble blood recognized by the goddess are qualified for this honor.”
“Historically, the best talents are selected from various dioceses for the Saint’s Trial.”
“But this time, there seems to be a little change. Among us, it appears we have a… contaminant.”
At this point, Levi’s gaze fell ominously on Alice, with a smile that felt both frivolous and indifferent.
“This year, the church made an exception to allow White Harbor to gather the talents of the Holy Light from the Western Continent, which is already a favor. But what’s the result?”
“A mere maid? Is this the best Extraordinary Being White Harbor could find?”
Levi’s smile faded, and he glanced at the high-ranking officials of White Harbor with a tone infused with arrogance: “Are you kidding me?!”
As his words fell, the high-ranking officials from White Harbor turned awkward.
One of the nuns couldn’t help but speak up: “Mr. Levi, while Miss Alice is a maid, she is exceptionally talented and ranks among the top of the younger generation in the Western Continent…”
Levi raised an eyebrow and interrupted: “Are you saying the young generation of the Western Continent only has this level?”
At this moment, not just the church officials but the representatives of various forces led by the Lionheart Kingdom all showed signs of displeasure.
Levi certainly noticed this, but he didn’t care.
In a speech, one must consider the forces involved.
White Harbor didn’t even count as a diocese; apart from the Holy Maiden, everyone else was just a bunch of exiled weaklings.
Regarding the various forces of the Western Continent, they were just a loose collection of rotten fish compared to the massive church.
Historically, every conflict between the church and the Western Continent ended with the latter retreating!
Since the Third Era, there’s been no unity in the Western Continent—what’s there to fear?
Thus, Levi looked down upon the entire Western Continent from the bottom of his heart.
And this was evidently a common sentiment among the church personnel who came to the Eastern Continent, as they wore expressions of indifference, even a sense of entitlement.
“Archbishop Simon, what do you mean by this?” Teresa frowned slightly and questioned her companion irritably.
“The young man is too spirited and speaks without thinking; please don’t take it to heart, elders,” Simon replied warmly.
“Let the young people handle their own matters.”
Everyone’s eyes turned to the blonde girl, eager to see how this candidate for the saint from White Harbor would respond to the provocation from the Eastern Continent’s best.
However, the blonde girl said nothing and didn’t even glance at Levi for a moment.
It was as if Saan, the Son of Light, had no interest in the disputes at all.
What’s this maid acting all high and mighty for?
Levi sneered inwardly, turning his focus directly onto Alice: “Miss Alice, let me be frank; please realize your position and refrain from participating in a sacred trial you are simply unworthy of…”
In response to Levi’s accusation, the faces of the high-ranking officials from White Harbor and the representative forces of the Western Continent grew increasingly grim.
But then, an unexpected scene unfolded.
A splash of red wine suddenly flew forth, drenching Levi’s face, and the originally handsome young boy was left completely stained by the vibrant liquid, ruining his image.
For a moment, followers of the Holy Light from White Harbor, various forces, and the followers of the Eastern Continent were all left in shock.
Levi raised his head in confusion, seemingly unable to comprehend what had just happened.
“……?”
Facing the bewildered gazes from everyone, the dark-haired young boy first politely returned the wine bottle to the servant’s tray before turning around with a hint of confusion.
“Did I do something wrong?”
“The Saint’s Guard is, after all, just a guard—how dare you insult the esteemed candidate for sainthood?!”
“I was merely teaching a lesson to that rude fellow on behalf of the candidate I serve. What’s wrong with that?”
This warped logic left everyone dumbfounded.
Levi was indeed a Saint’s Guard, but he was also the direct disciple of the Sword Saint, someone who even other candidates for sainthood were wary of! Even without considering this, was your retaliation too direct, buddy?!
And it seemed Roy was not finished; he stepped forward and harshly said: “What you need to recognize is your own position.”
“Alice’s reluctance to speak with you means you are unworthy. As a proud genius of the Eastern Continent, not even able to see this point, it seems the standard of your Eastern Continent is just this level.”
With these words, not just Levi’s expression shifted.
All the Holy Light believers from the Eastern Continent looked startled and glared at Roy.
The Holy Light Church might sit atop their heads by right, but now this guy actually dared to fight back and openly oppose the church?!
Except for Saan, all the candidates for sainthood gathered behind Levi. Dozens of high-ranking clerics representing the church subtly formed a united front behind them, like countless blades surrounding the vulnerable young boy.
Levi wiped the wine from his face, and his smile was no longer soft; it was pure malice.
“Roy Ainbrad, right?”
“Let me teach you two things.”
“One, to provoke someone, you need to have the capital. Two, a moment’s impulse comes with a price.”
A mere commoner could indeed insult a king at will.
But then what? Can you endure the price of countless corpses that follow?
Roy’s expression shifted, a glimmer of understanding apparent as he nodded slightly, “I completely agree.”
Following that, the Lionheart Princess, Elf Nightingale, chief of the dual academies, the daughter of the imperial duke, even the princes of Gold Sands and Southern Sea…
And behind them, the high-ranking officials representing various forces from the Western Continent all stepped forward, standing alongside the church’s upper echelons in complete solidarity.
Roy took a step forward, indifferently stating: “Let me also teach you two things.”
“One, provoking someone requires capital. Two, the price of a moment’s impulse is something you’ll never be able to afford.”
