Chapter 64: The Assassin
Outside of White Harbor.
On top of a tall building somewhere, the air shimmered, revealing a hazy figure.
One of the seven most wanted criminals in Academy City, Sequence 5 Extraordinary Being, the Chameleon.
No one knows his true admiration.
The bloodline of the Twilight Chameleon gives him the ability to warp light and create illusions, hiding his presence.
Whether it’s concealing his figure or his aura, the Chameleon is a master at both.
He even confidently boasted that as long as he didn’t take the initiative, no one below High Rank could track him down.
Assassinating a Candidate Saint is no simple matter, but with the clandestine support of the Holy Light Church, the Chameleon learned all of Alice’s schedule and security details in advance and prepared thoroughly.
Not that he was ten thousand percent certain, but it was worth a shot!
Unless some high-level Extraordinary Being felt bored and suddenly descended from the skies, even if the assassination failed, he could still escape safely!
On one hand, the church of the Eastern Continent promised to protect him well.
On the other hand, as an assassin, the Chameleon instinctively felt an urge to act.
Assassinating a Candidate Saint.
For thousands of years, only the Demon Race succeeded in such a feat during the Third Era!
And now, he would accomplish what the Demon Race once put all their strength into achieving!
Several shadowy figures wearing bird-head masks had silently appeared behind the Chameleon.
Just as other wanted criminals have their own forces, the Chameleon also has his trusted subordinates.
The Shrike, these individuals are assassin experts he raised himself. Not many in number, but their abilities are impressive. Even if they couldn’t defeat the extraordinary guards of White Harbor directly, they were enough to hold them off for a while.
“My lord, they have arrived.”
“Good.”
The Chameleon smirked: “I want to see if the destined Saint truly has that destiny!”
——————
In the carriage, the blonde girl in knight armor gazed out of the window, her expression a bit dazed.
Like a sage pondering the truths of the world.
How many times has it been now?
Why can’t she overcome her inner desires?
Why does she let herself be led around just by a few gentle words from her master?!
Just a head pat, a snack tossed her way, or a hug, and she feels light-headed and unable to think, completely useless!
Taking the initiative and making a move on her master was simply impossible!
Alice truly realized how difficult it was to flirt; she couldn’t even get started!
Sneaking a glance sideways, she saw the black-haired boy’s expression was as usual, neither sad nor happy.
Looking back, she hadn’t made any successful moves today, just indulged in her own enjoyment.
I wonder if master feels anything at all…
With that thought, Alice let out a soft sigh, her face falling.
Roy turned his head: “Why the sudden sigh? Are you tired?”
“No, I’m not.”
“Really? Wearing armor can’t be as comfortable as clothes, right? Do you want to change back into your old dress?” Roy asked concern.
“Uh, uh? But, but…” Alice glanced at Teresa.
“At least you can take off your boots.”
Just swapping boots, but in front of others…
Teresa discreetly looked away: “I didn’t see anything.”
Alice was caught in a significant mental struggle, filled with turmoil.
But at that moment, the carriage drove onto a bridge.
Teresa suddenly looked up, her brows raising.
Alice felt an inexplicable tremor in her chest, instinctively growing uncomfortable.
And in Roy’s mind, Phoenix’s casual warning echoed.
“There’s killing intent.”
“You can sense killing intent?”
“Hmm, to be precise, it’s malice from a soul, right around here…”
Before Roy could ask for details, a booming sound came.
Scorching explosive flames shattered the bridge.
The already narrow bridge collapsed entirely, the guards thrown into chaos, while two white pegasi with unicorn bloodlines got caught in the rubble, whinnying anxiously.
“Enemy attack! Enemy attack!”
“Quick, protect Lady Alice!”
Shadows surged.
The most dangerous assassin organization in Academy City, the Shrike, sprang into action. Just 24 of them, yet thanks to the dust and their exceptional agility, they toyed with the hundreds of guards.
Then, in the sky above, a massive magical circle lit up.
A giant bird was outlined by shadows, a fierce black gale shrieking down towards the carriage.
The Shrike’s secret weapon, Sequence 5 Extraordinary Artifact, the Shadow Magic Scroll, can record a Sequence 5 Extraordinary Being and reproduce it.
In this battle, the Chameleon had spent heavily!
Hidden somewhere, the Chameleon could hardly contain his excitement.
The ambush was a complete success; not a single member of the guard had noticed anything in advance, nor could anyone respond in time.
Now, all that was needed was the Windshadow Bird, recorded by the Shadow Magic Scroll, to break the carriage’s defensive magic, leaving Alice with no escape.
At that point, it would be time for the Chameleon to act and achieve his legendary status as an assassin!
However, as the roaring black bird descended engulfed in a howling wind, the carriage remained unharmed.
A tremendous Holy Light erupted, forming a dome that forcefully intercepted the screeching bird midair, preventing any advance.
Inside the carriage.
Under Teresa’s protection of Holy Light, aside from the unfortunate horses trapped under rubble, the three were unharmed.
“There’s an enemy attack…”
Upon sensing the enemy’s aura, Teresa’s lips curled up but were instantly pressed down: “You two, I’ll hold them off, you’d better retreat to the church first.”
“This…”
Roy furrowed his brows.
In front of high-level Extraordinary Beings, an ordinary Sequence 5 isn’t worth much.
Earlier, Xue Nuo had already surpassed a normal Sequence 5, even struggling against the Lich Empress’s projection.
Teresa suggested holding off instead of effortlessly eliminating the enemy, indicating that the foe was no simple matter.
“Lady Teresa, please be careful!”
Roy didn’t hesitate, immediately pulling Alice out of the carriage.
Seeing the two leave, the Saintess finally revealed a smile that was oddly out of place with her holiness.
A small variable might just lead to some strange chemistry between the two.
Swish…!
Wiping her mouth clear, Teresa finally stepped outside the carriage.
Meanwhile, Roy dragged Alice, quickly fleeing from the center of the battlefield through the dust.
Except for the high-level Extraordinary Being, the safest place was none other than the White Harbor Church.
A shadow dashed forward, and as Alice was about to draw her sword, the black-haired boy suddenly sprang into action, slicing the assailant in half with one hand.
“Alice, stay close to me!”
“Master…”
Just then, the shadow behind them twisted.
Though it wasn’t what he expected, how could the Chameleon miss the chance as the two left the carriage?!
The Chameleon raised his hand, shooting out a hidden dagger faster than lightning.
At the same moment, sensing something odd behind him, Roy had no time to retaliate and yanked Alice aside, prepared to take the blow himself.
However, neither the Chameleon nor Roy considered that the blonde girl could arrive in the nick of time.
Roy was knocked away by Alice sacrificing herself, staring helplessly as the sinister dagger fell toward the girl.
Chapter 65: The Rebellion
The sound of metal colliding rang sharply.
An arc flew off as Alice’s figure was propelled across the scenic river, crashing onto the opposite bank like a cannonball.
Alice got up, somewhat disheveled, clutching her arm, panting and shaken.
On her ivory white gauntlet was a shocking scratch left by the dagger, the broken half piercing deep enough to showcase its incredible power.
A Sequence 5’s hit is no child’s play, and with her current strength, it was utterly unmanageable.
Fortunately, the Holy Gauntlet saved her life.
When the Sequence 5’s strike came, the Holy Gauntlet automatically conjured a Holy Light shield, barely blocking the attack.
On the other side, the Chameleon casually waved, a second dagger protruding from his wrist.
“Foolish.”
“The guards should be the ones to step up, yet you chose to protect a guard instead?”
Under the shadowy hood, the Chameleon’s lips curled in a smirk, revealing a hint of mockery: “It seems the rumors are true, the Candidate Saint of White Harbor is nothing but an irredeemable loyal dog under the noble lord.”
Alice froze for a moment, hesitating before speaking: “…Thank you for the compliment.”
In the fierce battlefield, a brief silence ensued.
It’s natural for the strong to humiliate the weak; however, the Chameleon never expected that the other party would take his words as flattery.
The brainwashing of the noble lord is terrifying… If he had time, he’d really be curious to know what this girl experienced to have such a peculiar thought process.
But sadly, there was no time to waste.
“That artifact can only save you once.”
“The next strike will be the end of your life.”
As soon as he finished speaking, the Chameleon vanished from Alice’s view as if erased by an eraser.
The girl drew her sword, utilizing the Seraph’s power to heighten her senses to the extreme limit of Sequence 6.
However, all was calm, with nothing stirring.
No figure, sound, scent, extraordinary presence, or even killing intent could be perceived.
An invisible pressure made Alice break out in a cold sweat, but no matter how much she compelled her senses, she couldn’t catch even a glimpse of the Chameleon’s existence.
In the chaotic battleground, only Alice’s surroundings fell into uncanny silence.
Until a gentle breeze passed.
Behind Alice, the shadows twisted slightly.
Just as she turned around, she found the dagger lunging at her like a venomous snake!
No time left—
In that critical moment, Alice barely had time to feel terror but inexplicably let out a sigh of relief.
If the target was her, then her master should be safe, right?
However, just as the dagger was about to pierce through Alice’s neck, an invisible pressure surged like thunder.
Indescribable force struck down, freezing the Chameleon in his tracks.
In that split second, the dark-haired boy, whose eyes flowed with dark gold, had drawn his sword and swiftly pulled Alice behind him.
A mere Sequence 6…!
So you want to be a guard, huh? I’ll run you both through and send you to hell to reunite!
Seeing his prize snatched away, the Chameleon’s killing intent surged, disdainfully and resolutely turning his dagger toward Roy.
But this strike was destined to fail.
What awaited the Chameleon was the fury from the Crimson Blood Dragon.
Inferno!
A flame blade erupted, instantly engulfing the Chameleon’s figure.
The violent flames charged like an enraged fire dragon through the river, tearing a path straight through the riverbed.
The thunderous blow was so shocking that both guards and assassins momentarily halted in awe.
After the slash.
A large mass of water vaporized on the spot, scalding rains poured down, and the previously tidy riverbed was ripped apart, even the nearby path reduced to scorched earth, resembling a lava flow.
With no reservations.
With killing intent at play, Roy’s strike was a full-powered attack.
However, the boy who unleashed all this secretly clicked his tongue, his face darkening.
It hit, but it didn’t kill.
That wasn’t an ordinary assassin; it wouldn’t be easy to take his life without effort.
After a moment of hesitation, Roy ultimately chose not to pursue further, instead staying next to Alice.
For fear of falling into a trap while luring the tiger from its den, it was wiser to stick around.
Once the Chameleon fled, the remaining assassins were either killed by the guards or fled swiftly; the situation quickly came under control.
Roy sighed, then his expression softened as he asked, “Alice, are you hurt?”
“I’m unhurt. Thanks to master’s gift.”
Alice touched her gauntlet that had blocked the dagger, showing no signs of having narrowly escaped disaster; instead, she felt a strange delight.
As if nothing had happened moments prior.
But looking at the terrifying scratch on her pure white gauntlet, Roy felt a tightening in his heart, unable to treat it like nothing had happened.
Defense had always been Alice’s weak spot.
The angels’ bloodline is multi-functional, not that she couldn’t defend, but simply that she had never considered it.
At that time, Alice had used her power for speed, pushing herself away just in time when the assassin attacked.
“Alice, why did you jump in front of me just now?” Roy’s tone unintentionally grew stern.
Alice blinked in confusion and blurted, “To protect master is only natural for a maid…”
“But you’re not my maid right now, are you?”
“You’re the Candidate Saint; I’m the guard. If someone should be protecting, it should be me protecting you!”
This wasn’t the first time Alice put her life on the line so recklessly.
Whether facing cultists or magical beasts, she had always over-exerted herself to the point of injury.
Even though the original work had similar tendencies, Alice’s behavior now was even more exaggerated than before.
With the Trials for Saints approaching, Roy was sure that Alice would push herself to the limit again for the Trials.
Even if he had to be a bit harsh and make her dislike him, it was better than letting this girl do as she wished.
“Next time, don’t ever do that again. If we encounter danger, just stay behind me obediently.”
“…Did Alice do something wrong?”
The small maid’s dim gaze made Roy’s heart ache, but he kept a stern face, coldly saying, “Yes, you were wrong.”
Yet, he never expected Alice to regain her composure after a moment of disappointment and lift her head: “Alice knows she was wrong. But I’m very sorry, next time I will still step in front.”
???
The usually obedient and uncomplaining girl, as compliant as a doll, had turned so rebellious, leaving Roy at a loss.
Roy felt restless: “I told you, you are not my maid right now; you are a Candidate Saint…”
“It doesn’t matter.”
“It has nothing to do with any of that.”
“Even if I’m not your master, even if I’m a saint’s guard, I still want to protect you. No matter how many times we face danger, I will step in front of you. On this point, I will not compromise.”
The girl’s azure eyes were calm and resolute, like an unshakable sky, reflected in the astonished expression of the boy.
