Chapter 124: The Last Hope
“Phoenix, you……”
Concerned words were abruptly cut off because inside the former king’s tomb, Phoenix didn’t look good at all.
The once vibrant girl was now half consumed by the Holy Light, as if she had been painted in colors that didn’t belong to her.
The legendary immortal bird that supposedly rose from the ashes was currently drenched in a curse, sweating profusely and wearing an expression of pain.
“Sorry, the goddess’s power is beyond my imagination. Though I’ve never heard of her name, that bastard’s divine power is the real deal. If I were in my prime, it’d be a different story, but right now I can’t awaken Alice’s soul in front of her.”
“And besides, now’s not the time to worry about me.”
As the bitter laugh faded, Roy snapped back to reality.
Rubble fell like rain, scorched earth crumbled, and the once serene canyon was utterly torn apart, resembling a scene straight out of a natural disaster—everything in disarray.
At the center of the wreckage sat the black-haired boy.
Several blades of light pierced through his waist and limbs, and his skin was covered in horrible, deep wounds that showed bone.
Roy had long since grown used to pain, but the bone-deep burn brought on by the Holy Light was unlike anything he’d experienced. Even he, the tough guy, couldn’t help but show a pained expression and couldn’t stop groaning.
The Holy Light of the Seraph symbolized destruction and corrosion, suppressing his healing ability of 【Blood Regeneration】 and even his trump card 【Unquenchable Flame】.
At that moment, Roy was like a candle in the wind—he could go out at any second.
On the other side, the blazing Holy Light burned the heavens, casting the golden-haired angel with outstretched wings standing against a backdrop of ruthless, sacred sky.
Unsoiled, pure, and holy.
A sacred knight, a sword-wielding angel.
She’s so beautiful…
An absurd thought flashed through Roy’s mind, and he felt like he was in a scene right out of “Angel Waltz”.
The tragic villain, the brave hero.
After the final battle, the story would reach its conclusion.
“You’ve done enough.” Phoenix sighed.
“Even if it’s the blood of a False King, being able to tussle with a Sequence 4, and a Sequence 4 【Angel】 no less, has far exceeded the limits of mid-tier and even all the past False Kings.”
Roy was calm: “What do you want to say?”
“Give up. If you use 【Stillness】 to escape now, you still have a glimmer of hope.”
“Nothing is more important than life.”
Life comes above all.
Without a doubt, that was Roy’s original intent in adopting Alice.
All his words boiled down to just not wanting to meet destruction. He had pinned his hopes on the main character of the original story, the destined saint, trying to use her to rewrite fate.
But gradually, everything changed.
Perhaps he didn’t want the proud princess to fall to dragon flames, or perhaps he didn’t want the sweet nightingale to wither, or maybe he just didn’t want the lonely witch to fall into darkness alone, or the ice rose to sleep in eternal silence.
Somewhere along the line, he grew greedy.
Not wanting to live alone, but wanting more.
So at that time, Roy could have accepted everything Simon had done, letting Alice go to the Eastern Continent for her, but despite everything, he held onto her.
“Sorry, quitting halfway is a bit lame.”
Phoenix grew anxious: “Roy……”
“I absolutely don’t want to die. But I also don’t want to go back on my word, don’t want to succumb to fate, and definitely don’t want to abandon my girl and run away with my tail between my legs.”
“I used love-talking like a jerk to bring her into my arms. Since she believes in me, I can’t and won’t betray her trust.”
“I understand your feelings for her, but good intentions without hope will ultimately lead to a futile tragedy.” Phoenix’s tone remained heavy.
“I can’t save her, and you’re not her match.”
Roy hadn’t been naive enough to think he could wake Alice’s soul that was eroded by divine power just through love.
Not to mention that Phoenix wasn’t even a match for the divine power, he himself was at his limit, struggling to continue dealing with Alice.
But despite the blood dripping from his mouth, Roy laughed happily, “Quite the opposite.”
“I may not win, but I will never lose.”
“What are you talking about?”
“She won’t kill me.”
Even Phoenix, in that moment, felt as if she were listening to a madman talking nonsense and was left speechless.
But Roy confidently said, “The proof is that I’m still alive.”
Back when Alice had just become an angel and struck him with her sword, Roy had had his suspicions.
He had been shocked and completely unprepared.
Yet, in the hands of an angel capable of slaughtering the head of a cult, he remained unscathed, allowing him to use 【Stillness】 to slip past Simon unnoticed.
Now, the exchanges confirmed his belief.
Whether it was their previous close confrontations, or the 【Rain of Swords】 or the 【Blade Storm】.
Even at the limits of mid-tier, it was impossible to leap over the barriers of high-tier.
The Seraph had countless opportunities to kill him, yet none were successful.
Even until now, Alice hadn’t given up.
“Even if what you say is true, how will you save her?”
“A kiss can unite the bodies and reach the souls—this is what you taught me.”
Roy smiled softly: “【Blood Resonance】 can suppress the bloodline of an 【Angel】, and my soul can awaken Alice’s soul; a kiss can effortlessly achieve both.”
“Isn’t it a common trope to wake the sleeping princess with a kiss?”
Phoenix finally couldn’t hold it in: “Are you crazy?!”
“I’m already eroded by the Holy Light. Not to mention whether you can suppress the Sequence 4 bloodline power; just making contact with the goddess’s soul would turn you to ashes!”
“As long as I save Alice before that, it’s fine.”
The lad’s nonchalant reply made Phoenix want to swear, but because she had witnessed his journey within the soul, she realized more deeply that this guy was serious.
With a mortal soul stirring powers that even demigods struggled against—such a ridiculous and reckless act made Phoenix smile.
Not just her, but also the other gods who had witnessed the boy’s journey.
Wasn’t this precisely the reason they chose him?
After a period of silence, Phoenix began to shout in despair.
“Seriously, you’re crazier than that Booker kid!”
“But then again, what kind of goddess dares to slap my face? I can’t just let this debt go unpaid! I’ll go all the way with this!”
Phoenix said casually: “If she doesn’t want your kiss and retaliates with a chop, that’d be really lame.”
“That’s the one thing that’s impossible.” Roy laughed.
Struggling to get up, dragging his broken body, he looked up at the blinding light, raised his sword again, and faced the golden angel, his eyes burning with a determination hotter than the Holy Light.
Brilliant long hair, holy wings, crystalline eyes—everything about her was as beautiful as poetry.
But that was just a destined angel. How could she compare to his Alice?
“Alice, I’m coming to save you.”
