Chapter 2: Unity is a Luxury
Looking at the girl’s expression of affection and reluctance, Roy finally realized.
It turned out that whether it was about leaving White Port to stubbornly return to school or not wanting to be disturbed by the followers at the Academy, it wasn’t really about being dedicated to her studies or seeking tranquility.
To be precise, she was just stubborn about herself.
Only in front of him would the Holy Maiden relax her tense heartstrings in front of others, turning into a docile golden retriever.
Suddenly, Roy raised his head and planted a kiss on her forehead.
“Master?”
“Just treating you a little.”
“Like this…”
Alice shyly lowered her head, nuzzling affectionately against Roy’s neck. Her little white-socked feet curled slightly, like a puppy’s tail wagging joyfully.
Receiving her master’s treat, the hard work of the Holy Maiden became irrelevant at that moment.
However, this golden retriever that had already tasted the sweetness of candy wouldn’t be satisfied with just a mere thin layer of sugar coating.
The girl raised her head, her watery blue eyes filled with unspoken pleas.
Roy couldn’t stand being stared at like that.
“Alice?”
“Is that all there is to the treat?”
“Eh?”
Alice’s gaze initially shifted away, but then she mustered her courage to look at him again, weakly pleading, “Can you think of something more?”
Her lips, more dewy than morning dew, hesitated to come close, merely quivering slightly, hinting at the girl’s desire to say more.
Roy’s breath caught for a moment.
“Well, of course that’s possible!”
Then, he leaned in for a kiss.
What followed was a sensation softer than flower petals and a hint of warm, pleasant fragrance.
It felt like cotton candy melting in the sunlight, instantly becoming soft yet still tightly wrapping around his neck, impossible to shake off.
Of course, Roy didn’t want to shake her off; he wanted to be enveloped in this warmth and sweetness for a lifetime.
Ever since crossing that line, Alice remained a little shy but finally no longer suppressed her feelings, becoming more and more affectionate.
That’s a good thing.
The only downside was that she was becoming increasingly adorable, making Roy’s heart race even more.
After a kiss of no particular length, they quietly immersed themselves in each other’s presence, not wanting to do anything else.
“By the way, I need to meet with the Academy Head tomorrow morning to report.”
Actually, after retrieving Alice, Roy had already sent a letter to the Sage, reporting everything.
But some matters still needed to be discussed in person.
The true meaning of the Holy Light Church, the future of the West Continent, and most importantly, Alice herself.
The Goddess’s encroachment was a problem even Sister Teresa couldn’t resolve.
Teresa was not a core high-ranking member of the church, so she couldn’t access the deepest secrets of the Holy Light. Helping Alice temporarily seal the encroachment was already exhausting her efforts.
Thinking it over, only that Sage who rebuilt the Mage Academy and led humanity to defeat the Demon King could find a solution to the Goddess’s powers.
However, on this rare day off, Roy didn’t want to burden Alice any further.
“If Alice is tired, it’s okay to stay home and rest.”
Alice shook her head: “Tomorrow, Alice will also go.”
“I’ve said it’s okay not to go, you know?” Roy chuckled as he ran his hand through her fine golden hair, “As the Holy Maiden’s representative, my visit will suffice.”
Alice, enjoying the young man’s touch, did her best to maintain a serious expression: “That’s true, but the Headmaster helped us a lot, right? As the master’s maid, it’s necessary to express gratitude.”
“Moreover…”
The golden-haired girl’s eyes sparkled, shining brightly as she cheerfully said, “With my master accompanying me, Alice isn’t tired at all!”
Such adorable words warmed Roy’s heart again, and he couldn’t help but lean in to savor the sweetness of iris flowers.
Honestly, that girl’s compliments just keep getting sweeter.
The next morning.
Roy and Alice knocked on the Headmaster’s office door.
“Come in.”
With a gentle breeze, the door swung open.
Inside was the familiar figure of the kindly, deep-eyed old man, like the jolly sage with wisdom from all the fantastical stories.
Alice greeted him first.
Dressed neatly in her academy uniform, her elegance stood out even more, making her appear polite.
“Alice greets the Headmaster.”
“Thank you for descending your projection and offering assistance.”
The Sage nodded slightly in return: “No need for such formalities, Holy Maiden.”
“Completing the Trial or overcoming the encroachment is solely your and Roy’s achievement; my role has only been a trivial assist.”
The girl chuckled lightly: “That has nothing to do with it.”
“Now, being able to stay with my master is thanks to the Headmaster’s help, and that’s why Alice is grateful to you.”
Booker did not miss how the girl unconsciously intertwined her fingers with the young boy’s.
Does the Holy Maiden’s Trial and the Goddess’s power come before her companionship with him?
Many maids appear well-behaved and understanding, but this earnestness cannot be feigned.
“To meet such a good child, I envy you a bit,” Booker remarked, glancing at Roy with a teasing smile: “I really hope a certain deity could learn from her.”
Roy’s mouth twitched slightly.
Thank goodness Phoenix hasn’t awakened; otherwise, the Sage wouldn’t dare to be so cheeky.
The legendary great mage who saves the world is certainly admirable, but with the added trope of being a lolicon, that respect in Roy’s heart still deserves a discount.
“By the way, Holy Maiden just referred to him as…”
Realizing she’d said something wrong, Alice’s eyes widened, utterly frozen.
Not wanting to tease Alice, the Sage threw Roy an amused glance.
The young man sure knows how to have fun!
“Letting her call you that before was fine, but still letting her do it now? Aren’t you afraid the followers will come and mob you?”
Of course frightened! How could he not be?!
Roy returned an awkward yet polite smile.
Yet Alice frowned slightly, speaking with seriousness: “Alice will not allow them to meddle.”
“If any follower dares to harm my master, Alice will handle it for my master!”
The awkwardness dissipated, and Roy transitioned to a proud expression, placing a hand on the girl’s shoulder as if flaunting her.
Seeing this, the Sage felt a tinge of jealousy.
What a heartwarming girl!
Does such an angelic child truly exist?
“I really hope a certain little fiery bird that only knows how to mock others could learn from you.”
“Headmaster?”
“Nothing.”
Roy felt a wave of embarrassment.
Looks like the Sage is really letting himself go since the Phoenix is still asleep!
After some light chat, Roy began to recount the information he’d gathered to Booker.
Angelia’s discovery, the death of Lorine, the Holy Maiden’s secret, and the series of actions the Holy Light Church had taken in White Port.
Listening in silence, the Sage seemed calm, but deep within his gray eyes roiled with a brewing storm of anger.
“So, knowing the Catastrophe of Annihilation is real, the so-called world salvation was merely a lie fabricated by the Pope?”
“I have long known the Pope isn’t trustworthy, but I never expected him to be so obsessed with his own desires that he would even utilize a Cult? Now that I think about it, while we were fully engaged against the Demon Race, he was already scheming that unspeakable secret.”
“Wanting humanity to unite is truly a luxury.”
With a sigh, the gray-haired elder appeared more isolated than ever.
