Chapter 28: The True Gift
The crimson hair sported a pair of fiery cat ears that complemented the lace headband, while a slender cat tail swayed gently with the girl’s movements.
This simple embellishment created an entirely different charm. The girl’s expression softened, losing some of her haughtiness, and even her eyes, usually full of indignation, were now misty, radiating a sweet, pitiful purr reminiscent of a cat being cute.
Roy felt a warmth in his nostrils and nodded in affirmation, “Perfect!”
“Don’t get me wrong!”
Charlotte turned her head, her fluffy cat ears swaying, complaining incessantly.
“I really don’t get this childish outfit at all; I just thought it was a rare opportunity and saw you prepared so much, so I figured I’d play along a little.”
But seeing you wiggle that tail so enthusiastically says otherwise.
It was amusing to Roy, but he didn’t call her out. Instead, he quietly admired this playful side of the princess.
“So you dressed up just for me?”
Charlotte’s gaze faltered slightly, unable to openly admit what they both knew: “…Hmph, less talk.”
This was within Roy’s expectations.
For the proud Lionheart Princess to stoop to cosplaying as a cat girl was already a major exception; getting her to admit the true reason would probably make her little face catch fire.
“But I have one last request; I want you to cooperate a little.”
“Go ahead.”
“Can you do that move? You know, the one from Vanilla’s finale! And add a ‘meow’ at the end!”
Just like how 3D zones can’t have Tifa missing, if you’re cosplaying a cat girl, how can you skip the classic pose and catchphrase?!
“You, don’t go getting ahead of yourself!”
After scolding him, Charlotte’s expression softened as she looked at him with a complex look: “Do you really like cat girls that much?”
Roy shook his head.
He took her hand earnestly and said, “What I want to see isn’t just a cat girl; I want to see Charlotte as a cat girl!”
Invisible arrows struck her heart, and Charlotte trembled slightly before turning her head away, mumbling weakly, “I’m really at a loss with you…”
“This is the only time; don’t make it a habit!”
Then, Charlotte pushed back a bit.
With a slight bend at the knees and a lean forward, she twisted her slim waist, swaying her long cat tail, made cute little claws with her fists, and finally lifted her head to gaze at him.
Compared to Vanilla’s well-trained pose, this was far from professional and full of flaws.
But the girl’s shy, flushed face and the flicker of expectation in her eyes were deep emotions that others could never replicate.
“Meow, meow~”
Charlotte took it a step further, pressing a cat paw against his chest, gazing up.
As if remembering something, the clingy little red cat, her face a bright cherry, softly mewed, “You’re not allowed to look at other cats, okay?”
“!”
It was like an invisible cat paw hit his heart. Roy’s reaction was even more dramatic than Charlotte’s, leaving him breathless.
This is too cute!
Cat girls are the greatest civilization in this world; if anything’s greater than a cat girl, it’s this little red cat that belongs only to him!
“What’s wrong? Is something wrong…? Meow, don’t suddenly hug me! And don’t suck so randomly, you pervert! That’s… that’s not okay… Meow!”
Her cat ears perked up, and her fiery cat tail flailed like a dancing flame.
However, the girl’s apparent panic didn’t last long. In moments, she melted into the boy’s embrace, releasing a series of soft mewls.
The streets outside were bustling, continuing their busy ways.
After a while, the somewhat flustered duo reemerged into the crowd.
“Next time, don’t suck so randomly, you pervert! At least, don’t spring it out of nowhere.”
“…Sorry.”
Roy covered the scratches on his face and obediently reflected on his behavior.
And he was sure of one thing.
“Steel bones can’t withstand one swipe from Charlotte.”
Good times always feel fleeting.
After spending the afternoon strolling with Charlotte, the sun quickly dipped, painting the world in crimson.
Charlotte wore a slightly regretful expression. Compared to when they first set off, she was now clinging even tighter, wrapping her arms around his as if she wouldn’t let go.
“Today went by surprisingly fast.”
“Isn’t it a bit early to feel sentimental? The real surprise hasn’t even arrived yet.”
Charlotte looked dumbfounded, “There’s more surprise?”
With expensive carriages and gems, creative off-roading and cat cafés, whether it was a gift or a date, Charlotte felt utterly satisfied. The only regret was that this time was wrapping up.
She couldn’t imagine what other surprises were left. The cooled emotions within her were reignited by the boy’s teasing.
“Mhm, you’ll find out soon enough.”
Charlotte smiled again, “Then I’ll look forward to it.”
Roy lightly hummed, “I guarantee you’ll be satisfied.”
They chose the Red Jade Hotel in the Lionheart Kingdom for dinner; a luxurious place funded by the Lionheart faction, which was something Charlotte had anticipated.
On the top floor of the hotel, they could dine while enjoying an unobstructed sunset from the semi-open terrace.
As she looked at the crimson world blending into chaos, memories were stirred within Charlotte.
“This sunset is a bit like the ones we had back then.”
“Yeah, this place is modeled after the Red Fort, after all.”
Recalling that kiss from then, Charlotte instinctively touched her lips—there was shyness but even more nostalgia.
The blurred memories didn’t diminish the excitement of that moment; instead, they wrapped it in a hazy veil, making it more beautifully elusive and intensely memorable.
As Charlotte swirled her glass of red wine, her gaze intentionally fell on the boy’s lips, teasing, “Using the scenery from back then as a birthday gift, that would really score full points!”
“If you want to recreate everything from then, I’m not… against it, you know?”
Roy admitted he was moved.
Her enticing gaze drew him in, invisible flames ignited in his chest. The girl in the sunset was as elegant as he remembered—shy yet deeper like matured wine, shedding a touch of innocence for something to savor.
Roy sipped the red wine.
The sour-sweet drink felt bland in front of her, but he forced down his growing restlessness.
“But this isn’t the time for full points just yet.”
The Red Jade Hotel was the perfect stage to conclude their day, but the gift meant to end it was far from over.
Roy snapped his fingers.
A servant stepped forward respectfully.
“Charlotte, the gift I truly want to give you…”
Just as Roy was about to speak, the door suddenly burst open, and a stumbling member of the Lionheart faction rushed in.
“Lord Roy, it’s terrible… uh…!”
Realizing he had come at the wrong time, the man covered his mouth, but it was too late.
