Chapter 47: Soft over Hard, Just Sweet Talk It Out
Just when Good King Brother was racking his brains to explain a few high-emotional intelligence lines to Roy, Charlotte blew up, just as he expected.
“So, you think I can’t help you?”
“That’s not what I meant.”
“Then what do you mean?”
When angry, Charlotte’s brows furrowed, giving off an inexplicable smell of gunpowder, making her look like a tiny volcano ready to erupt.
Maybe other girls would be relieved to escape danger, but the little lion with a strong sense of pride since childhood would never be pleased to be treated like a kitty.
Having seen Charlotte angry more than once, Naz dared not intervene, and now was no different; he nervously shot glances at Roy, hoping he wouldn’t say anything to make her angrier.
But Roy, as if oblivious, calmly returned the princess’s sulky stare.
“Your lineage rank isn’t even at level 5; compared to Prince Naz, you’re indeed lacking a bit. The royal capital needs you more. As a princess, you have your responsibilities.”
“But…!”
Charlotte stepped forward, seemingly wanting to argue, but unexpectedly, Roy stepped in as well.
The suddenly closer distance threw Charlotte off balance. Roy seized the opportunity to steady her shoulder and softly said in her ear, “And, if anything really happens, I’ll be worried about you.”
The girl momentarily choked, a faint blush appearing on her cheeks.
After a brief silence, Charlotte turned her head away, coldly huffing with obvious reluctance.
“Fine, I’ll do it your way.”
Naz was completely dumbfounded by this scene.
Charlotte wasn’t oblivious to the bigger picture, but she wasn’t exactly easygoing either. She belonged to the bratty type who wouldn’t back down until she made a scene, even if she knew she was in the wrong.
Naz had seen her lose her cool plenty of times, and just thinking about it now gave him a headache.
He never imagined Roy could smooth things over with their little overlord so easily.
Naz sighed in relief, “Phew, looks like Charlotte has grown.”
Charlotte shot him a glare, “How does that make it sound like I’m unreasonable?”
“But you definitely were a bit too much, like at your twelfth birthday…”
Realizing she was in the wrong, Charlotte immediately exploded, cutting him off: “Shut up, shut up! Don’t bring up those unnecessary things!”
Not outright denying it was already a significant concession for Charlotte.
However, looking at her tightly pressed lips and deliberately avoiding his gaze, Roy couldn’t help but smile bitterly.
Being adaptable is an essential quality for a princess; objectively speaking, Charlotte heading to support the royal capital was indeed the best choice.
But that was just the princess’s decision.
The girl named Charlotte probably hadn’t accepted it yet.
In the following days, the fortress was bustling with activity.
Moving out troops for reinforcement was no small matter.
Currently, the fortress had gathered a hundred thousand soldiers, along with hundreds of extraordinary forces. Just organizing these troops required extensive preparation.
Logistics, route planning, and distributing battle strength when splitting forces—all these needed time.
Fortunately, according to Claude, there were currently no large-scale dragon clans or cults nearby, allowing them to safely dispatch troops to the surrounding towns to collect supplies and send griffon knights out for reconnaissance.
Charlotte took on the role of the overall commander, personally planning much of the troop deployments, always busy at the fortress’s front lines.
It had to be said, the Lionheart Princess, who frequently appeared before the people, certainly had more prestige than the First Prince, who had been stationed at the borders for a long time. Even if Charlotte did nothing, just standing there was enough to motivate the kingdom’s military and civilians.
However, that wasn’t good news for Roy.
“Charlotte, don’t you think you should take a break?”
“Not necessary. I still need to confirm the equipment distribution on both sides. Unless there’s something else, I need to get busy.”
Charlotte didn’t even look up, intending to pass by Roy.
But he stepped forward, supporting the wall to block her path.
“I have something—big something.”
When a soldier came to report the supply situation to Charlotte, he walked in on this scene. Without waiting for Charlotte to explain, he tactfully stepped back.
Charlotte twitched the corner of her mouth but could only let out a helpless sigh.
“Just say it.”
Looking at the girl who pretended to be calm, yet still showed signs of fatigue, Roy sighed slightly: “You should rest. You’ve been busy enough these days; soon we’ll be marching, and it would be a huge loss if you wore yourself out before we set out.”
Since arriving at the fortress, Charlotte hadn’t really rested. Just when he finally managed to persuade her to take a break, they got caught up in the Cult Dragon Society attack.
Ever since, Charlotte had worked even harder, hardly sleeping. Her once beautiful brows now showed slight hints of fatigue.
But Charlotte turned her head away, unhappy.
“Isn’t that what you said? As a princess, I have my responsibilities; you don’t need to trouble yourself over this little thing.”
Hearing that distant tone, Roy could only smile bitterly.
Sure enough, Charlotte was still mad about him not taking her along.
The situation was severe, and Charlotte probably understood that now wasn’t the time for outbursts. But that didn’t mean she could accept being left behind peacefully.
Puffed up with irritation, Charlotte turned her back, saying impatiently, “If there’s nothing else, I’m going to get busy.”
But before she could leave, Roy firmly grasped her delicate hand.
Unlike the last time alone on the wall at night, this time they were at a corner with soldiers and civilians moving about everywhere. Some even snickered and started gossiping, making Charlotte quite uncomfortable.
“Hey, what are you doing?! Let go!” Charlotte exclaimed, sounding anxious, but she didn’t seem to struggle much.
Honestly, if it came down to pure strength, Roy wouldn’t have been able to control her so easily.
“If you keep struggling, I’ll yell for help.”
“That should be my line!”
Roy spoke seriously, “Then I’ll kiss you in front of everyone until your legs give out, right? You wouldn’t want the kingdom’s citizens to see such an ungraceful side of you, right?”
“You… pervert!”
Roy softened his tone: “And, I’ve already asked Prince Naz to check the equipment distribution.”
“So taking a little breather isn’t a big deal.”
Gently stroking the girl’s slightly dull red hair, which had been neglected these days, Roy smiled wryly: “After all, we’re leaving tomorrow, and we won’t see each other for a while.”
“Just consider it to keep me company, okay?”
The rosy eyes trembled slightly, no longer so resistant.
Though she remained silent, Charlotte let go of her resistance, even dropping her token struggle, slipping into Roy’s side and linking arms with him.
“I’ll take that as your agreement.”
“… Whatever.”
With that reluctant agreement, Roy finally succeeded in coaxing the princess back to her chamber.
